Destructoid review: Mahjongg Artifacts 2 (PSP minis) photo

It's mahjongg. I'm not going to tell you that this is some groundbreaking videogame. But I will say that I played the hell out of this title. It seemed to fill some gap in my PSPgo library that I didn't know needed filling. Some days I played this title until my eyes became crossed.

This is Mahjongg Artifacts 2, a PSP minis title. The "2" in the title implies that there is a Mahjongg Artifacts 1. I never played the first one, but that didn't stop me from giving several hours of my life to tile matching and stereotypical Asian background music.

Is this particular PSP mini worth the asking price? I think so, but then again, I like mahjong.

Destructoid review: Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble photo

You know how it goes. There's always that one badass at school that no one messes with. Everyone around knows that this particular badass has dignified himself by pulling enough sucker punches and breaking enough noses over the years. This mindless brute, this impossible muscle head -- you usually just stay clear of him and let him do his thing while you do yours.

Every once in awhile, though, a badass with a brain comes along. Badasses that have goals. Badasses that aspire to more badassery. One particular badass in Japan gets an idea during a class field trip: He figures that if he can take out every other school's badasses, all of which are likely in the same place for the same field trip, he could rule over the entire country.

This is the idea behind Kenka Bancho: Badass Rumble, a new PSP game by Spike, brought over by Atlus. Can we write a review where we don't interject "badass" to describe the game? Let's see.

Destructoid review: Forza Motorsport 3 photo

Racing games are not for everybody. Well, the old ones were, but time went by, we slowly got away from the simplicity of just getting over the finish line first. Now we're at a point where we're controlling high-end simulations where realism and physics play a major role. You can't mindlessly mash the gas pedal anymore. Now you have to mind your racing lines, think about your cornering, perform upgrades and modifications, and put your mind in a place where you can focus on every aspect of the vehicle as you speed through insanely detailed recreations of real-world tracks. One missed step and you'll find yourself smashed against a wall.

Even with as complex as these games have become, fans of these racing simulation-style titles still come out in droves to pick up the latest "car porn." The realism in these games allow racing enthusiasts and vehicle lovers to toy with cars they might not otherwise get to handle. For many years now, Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo series has been the front runner for these racing sims, but Turn 10's Forza has been on their six, looking for an opportunity to pass. The race is not over yet, but it looks like Forza has pulled out in front.

Turn 10 has set a new high mark for racing games with Forza Motorsport 3. Fans of racing games are already frothing at the mouth at the level of game play and car offerings included. But what's most interesting is how the game now also caters to those that may have written off racing games in the past. Now's time to get back into the race.

Destructoid review: Bookworm Adventures 2 photo

Before I begin my review of Bookworm Adventures Volume 2, I have a dirty confession to make. As a games blogger, I know I really should have played every game ever made, but you know, I haven't. Therefore, I must make the guilty admittance to you that I have never logged even a moment of play time with the original Bookworm Adventures. This equals out to a total failure at life on my part, since I have a feeling it is a very good game.

On the dark side of things, this means I cannot tell you how much better Bookworm Adventures: Volume 2 is in comparison to the original. However, I can tell you that, much like the rest of the PopCap library, it's a highly addictive title that will in all likelihood drive me back to the first now that I've played the second. Wondering if it's your type of game? Well, hit the jump and I'll do my best to fill you in.

Destructoid Review: Pangya: Fantasy Golf photo

Imagine a golf game like, say, Hot Shots Golf, but with an over-the-top presentation and an RPG-ish layout and story. Oh, and have it starring a cast containing scantily clad girl pirates, huge-breasted military commanders, a cop with a beer gut, and a talking polar bear. Did I mention that this takes place in another dimension on a planet that almost worships hitting balls into holes? Sounds insane, doesn't it? It somehow manages to make total sense in Pangya: Fantasy Golf for the PSP.

If you haven't guessed by now, "fantasy" is the key word here. This arcade-style golf game comes off as highly original with its crazy cast of characters and its anime-styled art. But, at the end of the day, it's still a golf game, and all the sparkles and bouncing boobs in the world won't have you fooled. Luckily, I like golf games as well as sparkles and bouncing boobs.

Read on for our review of Pangya: Fantasy Golf.

Destructoid Review: Devil Survivor photo

So there you are with your friends, hanging out in Shibuya, Tokyo, minding your own business. Your chesty friend Yuzu (nicknamed Yoohoo) was busy being...well, chesty, while your nerdy friend Atsuro was rambling on about computers or something like that. All of a sudden, the sky goes dark, and the entire city of Tokyo is put on lock down by the Special Forces. You and your friends, along with all the other citizens, are trapped within the confines of the Yamanote circle, Tokyo's inner ring of train tracks.

But this will blow over, right? Maybe not. The military says the lock down has something to do with a gas leak, and they will not let anyone pass. It seems like they're hiding something. To make matters worse, monsters start appearing out of nowhere and begin killing innocent citizens. Do you stay trapped, waiting to die? Or do you fight back, pushing your way through the military blockade? But wait. You're just a student. What can you do?

Luckily, through some mysterious modifications by your even more mysterious cousin, your Nintendo DS-ish COMP game and communication system is now able to summon demons, much like the ones already terrorizing Tokyo. Could this be your chance to fight back and survive?

Read on for our review of Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor.

Destructoid review: Clover photo

Clover is one of those games that would immediately catch the eye of a certain type of gamer -- that is, the gamer always on the lookout for something slightly different than the rest of what's out there. Described as a "plot driven platformer", this Xbox LIVE Community title places you in the role of Sam, a young man living in a small Medieval village during troubled times.

With a 2D sidescrolling look and very straightforward gameplay, Clover is sure to appeal to retro gamers and turn off the types that are only interested in what's new and shiny. That'd be a shame for the latter group though, because Clover offers a thoughtful story behind its simple exterior. Hit the jump to find out more.

Destructoid Review: Galaga Remix (iPhone) photo

What is this? An iPhone game that controls perfectly fine, with no complaints connected to the lack of a d-pad or buttons? I know! I almost couldn't believe it myself. And a port of a classic game that, again, has no issues or drawbacks to being a mobile game? I'm surprised as you are.

It's nothing against the multitude if iPhone game makers, but I'm sad to say that much of what I've been playing/reviewing lately has been poor. That's not the case for Namco Bandai's Galaga Remix for iPhone and iPod Touch. This is how mobile games should be done.

Destructoid review: Class of Heroes photo

If you're reading a review of an Atlus game because you're a fan of any of their other titles, you may have some idea what to expect: beautifully drawn characters, old school fundmentals and often brutal difficulty. While this combo of features may not please every gamer, Atlus tend to shoot for the niche that can't get enough of it.

That same niche has most likely been looking forward to Class of Heroes for some time now. The PSP title boasts a crisp, pleasant look and dishes up the kind of gameplay any hardcore dungeon crawler fan is looking for: 75 dungeons, over 400 items to find and over 80 hours of gameplay if you choose to explore all it offers. You'll get your money's worth, that's for sure. But will you have fun along the way? Hit the jump for my review.

Destructoid Review: Knights in the Nightmare photo

You've never played anything like Knights in the Nightmare. How can I be so sure? Well, every time I try to explain the game play, I find that I have to explain it twice, even to seasoned gamers. But that's not a bad thing, mind you. In fact, it's totally refreshing, and it'll probably make the other DS role-playing titles look dull in comparison.

If you can imagine a grid-based tactical strategy role-playing battle combined with a Japanese shoot-'em up, complete with rows of raining bullets, then you're on your way to understanding Knights in the Nightmare. Once you wrap your head around this idea and get past a somewhat steep learning curve, you'll be able to enjoy one of the most inventive and engrossing titles ever released on the DS. It's totally worth the effort.

Destructoid review: Trixel photo

I've come to really love my iPhone for the bouts of quick and easy gaming it can provide, which comes in especially handy for impatient moments such as waiting in line at the bank. I have a modest handful of favorites for that purpose, but I'm always open to discover a new one. Enter Trixel, a puzzle title from Adept Games that starts off deceptively simple and grows more challenging as you progress.

Priced at $2.99, you can easily find yourself looking at a game like Trixel in the App Store trying to decide whether it could be yet another average puzzler (think WiiWare syndrome) or something out of the ordinary. Oh wait -- you don't have to wonder! You can hit the jump and I'll tell you all the details.

Resistance: Retribution has been getting a lot of love for taking all the features of a console game and transporting it to the handheld realm of the PSP. The fellows at Sony Bend have done a great job indeed of cramming a huge amount of content into the game and providing the kind of action you'd expect to see on a PS3, up to and including online play.

That said, have those waxing poetic about this game been simply dazzled by the amount of content and not the content itself? Our review is a little late, but it's given us the benefit of hindsight and it's certainly my belief that Retribution, while definitely not a bad game, has been given a bit more praise than it deserves, simply because it's on the PSP.

This is no rudderless claim, so read on for the full review of Resistance: Retribution.

Destructoid review: X-Men Origins: Wolverine photo

We all know the story when it comes to videogames based on movies. Rushed out of the gate to coincide with the theatrical release, lazily put together to cash in and make a quick buck off the back of some Hollywood travesty. At first glance, X-Men Origins: Wolverine should rightfully inspire the same sense of apathy that usually accompanies a licensed game.

However, as you may have already heard by now, Raven Software's brand new Wolverine game might not deserve the usual cynicism and derision reserved for the typical movie game. This is a game made by Wolverine fans and crafted with a genuine love for the source material, despite compromising with evil publisher Activision to base the game off the recent film.

So, is this truly one of the few licensed games that doesn't suck? Read on to find out!

Destructoid review: Plants vs. Zombies photo

There's one surefire way to amp up the cool factor of pretty much any game on the market, and that's to add zombies. With PopCap's newest offering, Plants vs. Zombies, this winning recipe also adds in green leafy characters fighting on the side of good and a simple premise: zombies try to shamble onto your lawn, and you try to amp up the power of your garden to keep them off. It sounds like a rocking good time before you even get started, really.

Join myself and Brad Nicholson past the jump as we dissect what it is to be a zombie, squabble over the strategy of using cattails rather than Venus Fly-traps, and discuss the finer points of fighting Michael Jackson.
