The Destructoid Comic: Open fire! photo

[The Destructoid Comic is a community plot driven comic series drawn by Mikey.]

Previously, on the Destructoid Comic:

Our heroes have finally fixed the Ikaruga! Nothing can stand between our heroes and certain victory ... or can it? Niero is still being held by the sinister Tom Jackson and Ash is still unwittingly controlling the deadly robot currently destroying Destructoid City. Will the city be saved? Will there even be a city left to save?

It's been a while since I last did one of these, my apologies. Lots of things going on the last couple of months, so sadly I had no time to get new pages done. But the comic is now back! Enjoy after the break!

The Destructoid Comic: Power up! photo

Previously on the Destructoid comic:

It's been many hours since the battle of Destructoid City began, to some, it must feel like months. The giant robot seemed invincible, until the arrival of Brad Nicholson. Taking it down with a blast of CHEST™ energy, he manages to buy some time for the RetroforceGO! crew and Sterling to get hold of the Dreamcast needed to power the Ikaruga. With the Ikaruga up and running, they will have a chance to take destroy the Destructor-toid before it restores itself to full power.

Meanwhile, evil attorney Tom Jackson has sent out his team of videogame ninjas to take care of Nicholson and a battle damaged CTZ, Failcast have seemingly been killed fighting zombie hordes, Anthony Burch and Ashley Davis are called into battle and Niero is still held captive ...

I did choose a comment to inspire the comic, but as I was drawing it, it evolved into something else entirely. The plan was to include Samit, but page got a little too crowded so alas, he had to be cut. But I'm sure he'll make an appearance at some point!

The Destructoid Comic: Battle stations photo

Previously on the Destructoid Comic:

Just when you think it's the end for Destructoid, Brad Nicholson steps in to save the day. Scoring a direct hit on the Destructor-toid with energy stored in his mighty pectorals, he brings the Destructor-toid down. But for how long?

Winning comment was Chooly! His comment was:

Tom Jackson decides it's time to take drastic measures and sends out a small, elite army to attempt to dispatch Brad Nicholson and a battle ensues on the rooftops with an astonished CTZ watching in awe. Meanwhile, members of the forums have been theorizing that the destructor-toid is being controlled by a single source. They haven't been able to pinpoint where that is but what they do know is that the robot is being powered remotely somewhere else in the city. Our heros must then venture fourth with their newly acquired dreamcast to the location of the power source in an attempt to shut destructor-toid down.

Four new pages after the jump!

Previously on the Destructoid Comic:

It seems like an eternity since our heroes set about on their quest to retrieve a Dreamcast from the Goodwill store, needed to repair the Ikaruga. They have fought through the night against sentient consoles and deadly troll zombies, all while keeping undercover, away from the giant, metal behemoth, the Destructor-toid. Unwittingly controlled by young Ashley Burch, The Destructor-toid has destroyed much of the city, and nothing has come close to stopping it.

That is... until now.

The Destructoid Comic: Goodwill hunting photo

Previously on the Destructoid Comic:

Underground in the Destructoid City subway system, RetroforceGO!, Jim Sterling and the Failcast crew find themselves surrounded by a horde of zombies. Selflessly, the Failcast crew decide to to distract the horde allowing Jim and the RetroforceGO! team to escape.

It's been a long night, but they finally make it to the Goodwill store to get hold of a Dreamcast needed to power Topher's ship, the Ikaruga. The only hope the team have of bringing down the Destructor-toid and saving the city.

Meanwhile, it is revealed that the the menace behind the Destructor-toid is Tom Jackson, a vicious megalomaniac intent on proving to the world that videogames are a threat to the world.

This weeks comic was inspired by Technophile. You can check out his idea and the two new comic pages after the break.

The Destructoid Comic: Those left behind photo

Previously on the Destructoid Comic:

CyberneticTigerZ bravely steps out of the broom closet that he, Jim, RetroforceGO! and the Failcast crew were holed up in to check that the coast is clear. Suddenly, the roof caves in. Looking up he sees the glowing red eyes of the Destructor-toid staring down, it's huge metal hand reaching toward him. The hand comes crashing down appearing to crush CTZ. Luckily, CTZ's armour is designed to withstand such pressure and he survives, though much of his Cyber Organic Tiger Shark suit is damaged. CTZ is less than pleased. Jim, RetroforceGO! and the Failcast believe CTZ to have been killed.

The comment that pushed the story along this time was Necros!

Shit just got real.

My thoughts:

Topher's Ikaruga is still crucial to stopping the giant menace, but it still needs that Dreamcast from Goodwill. However, the robot has found the underground safehouse because of Ashley's reckless playing, so the Dtoid crew is in trouble. Hamza and Jim break off to fight the Destructor-toid head-on so that RetroforceGO! can proceed to Goodwill. The Failcast crew stays behind at the safehouse to fend off the zombies so that they are not followed.

Kind of dry, but it'll move the story along (resolving RFGO's goal from several months ago), and it also works with other suggestions for Hamza that are far more descriptive and imaginative than mine.
I thought it was best to re-aim everyone towards the goal of the Dreamcast, before we forget what's happening.

The Destructoid Comic: Face to face photo

Previously, on The Destructoid Comic:

The mastermind behind all the chaos is revealed to be none other than Tom Jackson! Ashley Burch is unwittingly controlling the Destructor-toid! The streets are filled with robotic consoles! The subways are filled with zombies! CTZ, Jim, RetroForceGO! and the Failcast crew are trapped in a broom closet! Papa Burch demands Metal Gear! The forums are that way! Also, cocks ...

This ideas for these pages came from two comments; The Incredible Edible Egg and Tronjoy. The Incredible Edible Egg suggested that Ashley test the game by seeing what it could do and Tronjoy's suggested having the Destructor-toid smash through the street into the subway below.

These page went though an absolute ton of revisions. I even penciled and inked different versions before deciding to scrap them as they looked awful. And then I had to start again. Anyway, check out the three new pages after the break.

The Destructoid Comic: Mandatory monologue photo

The Destructor-Toid is STILL terrorizing the city! By the time anyone does anything to stop it, will there even be a city left to save? Most of Destructoid's heroes are underground, trapped with insane troll zombies! The streets are filled with sentient consoles! The Burch siblings 360 seems to have red ringed! Yashoki is somehow a witch!

Is there no hope for Destructoid City? Is this truly the end? Who is the cause of all this? And why?

There isn't really a winning comment for this one, it's pretty much an amalgamation of a few. A couple people wanted Papa Burch so I threw him in along with a second page detailing Niero's whereabouts and his kidnapper (who, by the way, has nothing to do with a certain anti videogame activist/former attorney. It's all just pure coincidence ... ).

Jim, CTZ and the RetroforeGO! crew are traveling through the Destructoid City subway system, which is now overrun with zombie trolls. There they find Necros, who leads them to a safe room/broom closet to meet other survivors.

The Destructor-toid is still roaming the city skyline ploughing through buildings in an almost child-like fashion. Along with it, the streets are filled with seemingly sentient Xbox 360s, attacking anyone that they come across. No-one has a clue what's going on. Not even me.

It was Conrad Zimmerman who had the winning comment this time. Check it out after the jump.

The Destructoid Comic: Run or shoot? photo

About three hours ago, a giant, skyscraper sized robot crash landed in the center of Destructoid City and began to flatten everything in it's way. Along with it came it's foot soldiers, the Red Ring Zombies, faulty Xbox 360s rewired to become ruthless killing machines. Jim Sterling, paired up with CyberneticTigerZ, attempt to stop the giant automaton, known only as the Destructor-toid, but realize that this is a battle they won't be able to win alone.

CTZ calls in the Retroforce GO! team and decide that the best plan of attack is to use Topher "Hi-Score" Cantler's ship, the Ikaruga, to take the beast down.

As usual in these sorts of situations, there's a hitch. The Ikaruga is grounded. A vital engine component, a Sega Dreamcast, is damaged and a new one is needed. Knowing of a Goodwill a couple of blocks away, Topher believes it will be safer to travel along the subway lines, out of the way of the Red Ringers that roam the streets.

However, underground may not have been as safe as he thought. More after the jump.

The Destructoid Comic: Compulsory underground level photo

The story so far:

The best plan of action to take out the Destructor-toid is to use Topher's ship, the Ikaruga. Well, it would be, but due to an unfortunate turn of events, the ship is out of action unless the group can get hold of a specialised engine part ... A Sega Dreamcast! Topher knows of a Goodwill store that has one and decides the safest way to get to it would be to go through the city subway system.

I'm sure nothing could possibly go wrong.

Puppy Licks had the winning comment this time:
The crew head underground where the sewers are filled with zombies that are actually commenters who have no avatars and yell random shit like "FIRST!" and spam the C blogs.

As the team let CTZ swing his banhammer every which way screaming "BANNED BITCHES!!" they begin to get outnumbered. They are almost overwhelmed until a mysterious pipebomb lures all the zombies away and blows them all into bloody chunks. The team looks and finds that the Failcast crew (all dressed as the L4D guys, Necros is Zoey) have been down there for weeks and are willing to lend a hand (unofficially).

Either that or try and squeeze a FireGod reference in there somewhere ;)
You may have noticed that I haven't included the entire Failcast team in this one. I was going to until I realized I have no idea what they look like. I know what Necros looks like because I think he added me on Facebook. Actually ... I'm not even sure if that is Necros. At the very least he's dressed as Zoey. If it's him.

Also, I've squeezed in a community member cameo! I'll try and do this more often. Check out the two brand new pages after the jump and be sure to leave a comment detailing what the next page should be!

The Destructoid Comic: The long way round photo

 The story so far:

There is a giant robot on the loose, destroying the very city Jim swore to protect. Unable to fend it off alone, he calls on the help of CyberneticTigerZ! The last remaining warrior of the long forgotten Sharktroopers, equipped with state of the art cyber battle armour and his trusty B.A.N. Hammer, he agrees to lend a hand.

CTZ decides that even with his mighty awesome powersuit, this fight may prove too much, even for him. CTZ calls in a favour from RetroForceGO!, legendary warriors whose skills are supposedly unmatched. Will they be enough to destroy the rampaging robot?

This time it was kce05d that pushed the story forward, with the comment:

You mentioned that Topher would be piloting something (Ikaruga?) and while it would just make sense to fly everyone over to the giant robot, you should have them do the what most games and movies do and have them take the long way for some ridiculously arbitrary reason. Adds more pages to your story, pokes fun at that particular cliche, and I can just imagine hilarious commentary from Jim (the comic version, that is.)
Also, a bonus plot point from Topher:
Dyson's Dreamcast should be an engine component for the Ikaruga. Like I couldn't fly it because it was missing a part, and then Dyson pops the Dreamcast in there and it powers on. Then I fly away and do something awesome.
I decided to do a bit of mixing and matching this time for a double pager. I might do more double pages in the future as well, if a comment comes my way that's too awesome to squeeze onto one, I'll spread it out.

Check out both pages after the jump!

The story so far:

CyberneticTigerZ decides to push on ahead, much to Jim's objections. While they head towards the Destructor-toid they suddenly find themselves surrounded! They are attacked by a number of Red Ring Zombies, failed Xbox 360 bots that are apparently being controlled by the same villain as the Destructor-toid itself. Luckily, RetroforceGO! arrives just in the nick of time ...

This week's winning comment was from Necrozen:
Sterling is on the ground, the Red Ringer has taken him down. He is struggling with it. Sterling: "Bias my arse ... "

Right as Sterling's head is about to be popped by a Red Ringer, Dyson kicks it off and pins it down by the neck with his foot.
Dyson: "You'll never guess what I found at Goodwill ... " Sterling is geting up in the background, Dyson Blasts the Red Ringer in the head in the foreground with the superscope.
Full suggestion after the jump. As is always the case, I had to adjust the suggestion a little, I kept some key points, leaving out what I couldn't fit in.

THE RULES:
1. You have 24 hours from the time this blog was posted to suggest what happens next. After that, I'll choose the winning comment and the page will then be posted the following week.

2. Try to keep it relatively SFW.

3. You can only make a suggestion once per week.

4. Your suggestion has to fit on one page.

So how are they gonna do this?

The story so far:

JIm and CyberneticTigerZ, team up to battle the threat of the monstrosity known only as the Destructor-toid. CTZ decides the only way to deal with the beast is to call in RetroforceGO!, a team of skilled warriors hardened on the pixellated battlefields of the 80s and early 90s. With the knowledge that the RFGO! team are on their way, CTZ and Jim make their way towards the giant robot.

This weeks winning comment was from EarthBounder Ness:

Cut to Jim and Hamza's surroundings, where they've been encompased by a small number of low tier F.S. (Failed System) bots, Ataris, Jaguars and 3D0s. The bots are ready to launch an attack on the two heroes when suddenly a barrage of Super Scope blasts tear them to shreds.

The RFGO! team rushes to Jim and Hamza's sides. "Just in the knick of bloody time!" Jim shouts, wide eyed at the sight of what he now sees.

Cut out once again, further this time, showing that the bots that had surrounded the group initially were just the first wave, they are now surrounded by an entire army. Jim, Hamza and RFG all shout "Bring it!" as Topher throws an empty Slurpee cup at the bots.

I couldn't really get the 3D0, Atari and Jaguar bots to look right, so I spent a lot of time thinking about what I could use instead, but still keep it grounded to the suggestion. So I thought, failed system bots, a lot of people are complaining about their 360s dying ... hmmm ...

Then I played Left 4 Dead. Then watched Resident Evil: Degeneration. Then Played the Ravenholm chapter in Half-Life 2. Then suddenly, I had it! Failed consoles, Red Ring of Death ... dead ... UNDEAD ... ZOMBIE CONSOLES. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough room for RetroforceGO! to save the day.

THE RULES:
1. You have 24 hours from the time this blog was posted to suggest what happens next. After that, I'll choose the winning comment and the page will then be posted the following week.

2. Try to keep it relatively SFW.

3. You can only make a suggestion once per week.

4. Your suggestion has to fit on one page.
