Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall now available for download photo

Bethesda Softworks is celebrating the fifteen-year anniversary of the Elder Scrolls franchise in a delicious way: starting today the second title in the Elder Scrolls series (subtitled “Daggerfall”) is available as a free download through the studios’ Web site. Yep. This isn’t an illegal download from a garbage abandonware site. This is the real thing in all its dated and buggy glory.

As Bethesda notes on their development blog, this sort of fan service isn’t exactly new. Five years ago, the studio released Elder Scrolls: Arena in much this same fashion. (Do we get Morrowind in 2014?) Also noted is that in order to run Daggerfall, you’ll need to use a program like DOSBox. It's a tricky bit of software, but a Bethesda QA is making our lives a lot easier: He's created a walkthrough for the process.

So, Daggerfall: are you guys going to give this a spin?

[Thanks, King3vbo and wheeliedude]

My computer isn't powerful enough to handle a game this large. Come on Bethesda, release this for the consoles. PC gaming is dead.

I like free stuff, but this looks too old school for me too handle.

I could deal with it being old school if it wasn't so buggy. It's pretty cool that the game world is so huge, though.

Ooooooo what about TES:Arena?

:D
It was my first PC I bought and had to install it to a hidden directory on my Dads PC. Hes an old school programmer but his 13 year old son knew more about the OS then he did... mUWAHAHAHA good times.

I actually have boxed copy of the CDROM version of Arena (think about THAT, nerds!).

I have the fondest memories of being at my friends house while we waited for the game to install off of the multiple 3.5"s disks (that's right! DISKS!).

Talk about a memory hog.

After a couple hardware upgrades we were finally able to play the shiat out of this game.

Up-hill! Both ways! Barefoot! With the Commies spying on our every move!

(J/K, I'm not THAT old.)

This is very, VERY cool of them to do. Daggerfall was my first experience with a massively huge RPG. You guys should become vampires. It's the SHIAT!

I dont have it boxed, but Ive got the original CD, in all its black and white lich printed glory.

This game was too buggy to be believed, but I loved it none the less. (not enough to replay it now though)

Got this up and running off my USB stick. Now no work computer will be safe tomorrow :p. Haven't played this in many many years, but I'm sure it will be a blast again.

I have my copy with box and instructions. I remember picking it up cheap with the X-Com double pack (with two bloody heavy walkthrough guides), and then never played the X-Com games thanks to Daggerfall.

I got to the point where I could afford a ship and a house, by visiting a small town, murdering citizens, then the guards, dumping their stuff onto the horse and cart, then heading back to a nice city to sell. Rinse and repeat. Gods I was evil when I was younger.

@Double J: If your computer can browse destructoid then it can play a game this old.

Downloading now...it's a bit slow, but I've got a place reserved on my thumbdrive reserved for Arena and Daggerfall, right next to my DOSBox portable app.

Man, with these games and with Mechwarrior 4 coming out for free later on, this is looking to be a good month for freebie old games.

Haha DOSBox isn't hard at ALL! They updated it so all you have to do is drag the game's .exe, from Windows, into DOSBox.exe and it boots!

I'm gonna climb up a house to snipe at guards, fall inside it at a seam and get stuck forever, just like the good ol' days!

An' I totally sent a tip on this too. *pouty face*

Good to hear some old timer PC gamers out there, heh. I missed this one. The scale of the game scares me at this point in time. Seems very old school PC deep. Not sure if I have the patience to go back to something like that.

I'll probably try it out just for the free blast of the past, but I can't see myself playing it for very long.
