"I don't believe Nintendo needed a 'killer app' for the 3DS launch. The 3DS alone and its unique features will drive initial sales..."
Reminds me of what Sony did with the PS3. Released a powerhouse with hardly any games to utilize it. I recently bought the Slim(my first and only version, as I don't believe in multiple iterations of systems) and I'm pleased with it's functionality. I do however wish I had the ability to play all of my Sony games in one system, but who wouldn't these days?
Anyway, 3DS looks great and has great potential, but I'm one of the many people who feel there isn't much reason beyond just the 3D to get one. As Jim stated, "...the system lets itself down with some truly half-baked design." That's the biggest reason I didn't get a launch system. I don't wanna hear it will be great later, I want it to be great now! Thanks for being our guinea pig Jim!
Not that I'm in favor of the list being capped as it is, mind you, I guess I'm just picky about who I friend online - I'd rather them not be the type that spams my inbox to come play this or that or is one of those annoying mouth-breathers (but that part's a whole other issue).
They probably didn't include some of these features so they could include them into later 3DS versions. They knew that people would have bought the system no matter what.
The clever bastards...
1) Pokemon Stadium using AR cards to battle your friends
2) Pokemon Snap
3) Pokemon trading cards using AR
Now give me my paycheck.
Also, the iPhone has AR, fully supported e-shopping, 100% game suspension (background apps), achievements, social integration (Facebook/Twitter), the option to go 3G or just wifi (ie an iPod Touch - Sony is doing this with the NGP), actual indie support (iPhone startup costs are nearly nothing, outside of the final 30% cut Apple gets), and most importantly, good games for $1-$5, instead of $30-$40.
I know Sterling already knows this, but I wish more people would stop hating on Apple, and realize Nintendo is starting to be surpassed on many levels. This is a brand new era in Nintendo's history: they chose to start it off with a gimmick, and very little functionality. I can't wait for that main-stead Nintendo way of thinking (it's the games, stupid!), and nab some killer 3DS apps, but I hope some firmware updates make the system itself a little less limited.
theres not one game originally on ios thats better than the 30th best thing on a real platform handheld
hell even the 3ds launch games are deeper and better controlled experiences.
play street fighter 4 on ios for 1 dollar and then play it on the 3ds. Its better than a console
He's right about the variety of titles but I think that people are allowed to voice criticism about the lack of quality (which is almost unanimously agreed upon).
Also, by "pererami", did you mean these things:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peperami
or this
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Peperami
If you meant the first one, I don't know what the connotation with those things is because I'm not from the UK and if you meant the second, I can assure, my chin is quite baller. I am a bastard though, so you got me there.
And I don't understand the Street Pass complaints, I mean is it really Nintendos fault that the place you live isn't "ideal" for such a feature? N. And honestly you can't be blamed for living in that place either. But again you just can't "point the finger" at nintendo for that. Plus the system has only been officially out for a barely 1 to 3 days! Give it some time for gods sake! Maybe as the adoption rate increases you'll start to get some streetpass Miis. And you know what maybe you can do something about it doesn't, arrange a street pass meeting on Facebook or something (some already are), create new walking routines for yourself, or whatever. I honestly hope the streetpass features don't go online, it would defeat the entire
Purpose of the system, and I assure you that it will not be fun or interesting anymore if it does. Where's the joy and surprise if you just enter a code online or something and a Mii just pops up?!
I must completely agree about the parakeets though, a new 3DS Electroclapton staring the parakeets would be amazing!
I disagree about the direction the AR cards should take. Why would there need to be booster packs for cards if the software is what determines what pops out of a card? Just use the current cards with new games. Also, I absolutely love the idea of street pass and if anything I want them to rely on that in the future just as much as they are now.
If Nintendo stays on top of putting out updates, most of these problems are going to be non-issues shortly; it is just a question of whether or not they will.
Also Pokemon AR would be amazing. For some reason that idea has made me think back to those duel disks they used in Yu-Gi-Oh, where they played real-life hologram card games! I'm just imagining throwing a giant AR card down in the middle of a train station and dueling someone I met over street pass before the security guard takes us away..
Look at it this way. Remember what the 360 was like when it first launched? Remember the PS3? Their interfaces weren't stellar and they didn't have massive amounts of killer apps at launch either. These things take time. Hell people are STILL complaining there are no good PSP games (even though there are).
The features that are unlocked with streetpass, can also be unlocked with play coins. Atleast, from the games I've played. Could be that some 3rd party devs didn't (or may not) include such a way out.
The most aannoying thing I find, is how you have limited multitasking with the 3ds. I hope they solve that by the time the browser comes out. Because browsing the internet for solutions is THE most important benefit for multitasking. The only thing I'm worried about, is if Nintendo can implement such a solution without draining the batteries too much. Having programs in the background will definitely drain the game time more quickly.
"with apple you get what you pay for in games . 10 dollars or less shovelware theres not one game originally on ios thats better than the 30th best thing on a real platform handheld"
So what you're telling me is that Infinity Blade isn't as good as Elf Bowling?
You talk about living in Miss. and not getting any streetpasses, I probably passed close to a million people and I did not get one streetpass. I have SSFIV, Asphalt 3D, Ridge Racer 3D, Lego Star Wars, "Find Mii", Mii Plaza and the Mii Puzzle games all set up for street pass and I got nothing..... Nothing except about 7 thousand steps, which still only gives you the maximum 10 coins.
I know the system is new, but you'd think I would have gotten at least one hit.
Has anyone had a similar experience or gotten street passes from total strangers yet?
I'd really like to know that this thing works......
(Instead of having to pay 40 dollars for ports I mean).
The biggest worry I have is that games will incorporate Streetpass in order to unlock things, or get items, events, etc etc (Pokemon, and that BS mail system in FF3 for DS come to mind here). That locks out a HUGE portion of the US market because, well, most of us have to drive everywhere... And as well as any other market that does not live in a densely packed city.
I know this is totally built by Japanese and for a Japanese market, but I'm not saying to axe the feature; I just don't want Streetpass to become standard fare in games in order to advance.
Nintendo seems to focus too much on local IR and wireless, instead of the big picture. Can you imagine the Pokemon Global Trading System on a XBox Live interface
Now if only they'd actually do something like that...
I walked roughly 20000 steps today around my local "big" town (my hometown in the UK Midlands is a tiny place - you need a bit of travel to get to where people congregate) and got three hits, only one of which was an employee of a Game store. Not bad for a first shot outdoors with the system.
One thing to remember though: always activate StreetPass Puzzle and Quest as soon as you find people, if you get the opportunity. Don't open up any new software or turn the DS off. I made this mistake on the Saturday after getting the machine: I walked past about eight people at a retro Memorobillia Expo but turned the system off to save power after leaving. The 3DS wouldn't let me take items from any of the people I'd registered, regardless that the option was there earlier and I hadn't used it.
Oh, and Jim Sterling lives in Mississippi? Is that near London?
I wouldnt read too much into what I spew mate lol
Yeah its the peperami salami things. Im random, dont take anything I say too seriously on here. Unless Im genuinely interested in a game or topic. ;)
My mii is getting pissed, being stuck in that cage...... LOL
There is one thing that's annoying me, do we have to sift through a "You could use Sleep Mode instead" screen every time we turn the system off? If I wanted to use sleep mode, I would have just shut the freakin' lid. Maybe there's a way around this I don't know anout (If so, please tell me) but I fail to see the point of this screen regardless.
I actually did have the chance for a Street Fighter 4 street pass earlier today, but since I don't have that set-up...yeah. But I did pass a guy earlier with a 3DS playing SF4. I was actually kind of shocked. I never ever thought I would see an actual StreetPass opportunity in my lifetime. My city is large, but it's not near crowded enough for me to think I could pass someone with their 3DS in sleep mode.
@SourGr8pes
I'm not worried about that at all. StreetPass's concept has already been in several regular DS games (Metroid Prime Hunters comes to mind) and it's yet to be anything beyond pointless name registering or message swapping. I can't imagine developers deliberately making something important unlockable only through StreetPass.
