Eidos teaser maybe, probably hints at Thief 4 photo

It seems that Eidos Montreal -- currently working on Deus Ex 3 -- is gearing up to announce their second project soon. How do we know? Because it posted an image on its Web site that says they're going to announced their second project soon. How about that?

But what could it be? The Internet has speculated, and they've come to the conclusion that it could possibly be the long-awaited (once in production, then canceled) Thief 4. There is, however, some confusion. One user on the Through The Looking Glass forums is positive that the font used for the teaser is the "classic" Thief-series font, Carleton Regular. (Of course!) Another user, quite frankly, just doesn't see it.

Compelling evidence, to be sure. More compelling, however, is an old Eidos Montreal job listing that stated the developer was "proud to announce the recruitment for our 2nd 'AAA' project … A hint! The title begins with the letter 'T'.”

Oh, E3. You can't come soon enough.

[Thanks, Derek!]

Hmm, Thief 4....if it's as good as Thief 2 but not as bad as Thief 3, we'll have something going. But should it be first-person or third-person?

Thief 1-2 are still the best stealth games ever, by quite a huge margin. For this to work, they have to stick to the classic formula. Garrett has to be vulnerable (they can't turn him into some badass assassin with regenerating health), and they have to keep it level-based. Going open-world would break the game.

In Thief 1-2, your cash and items didn't carry over (you couldn't horde), so there was constant incentive to find as much loot as you could and make full use of your items in every stage. I hope the developers understand this.

Then there's the AI with at least 5 levels of awareness... Man, I would love a new Thief game, but it feels like so much could go wrong that the prospect scares me :)

@lastdual

I'd prefer that the amount of items you take be limited rather than never carried over, so you'd have to choose a proper "loadout" for a given job.

If there were changes to the formula they would be best left in the acrobatics department. I doubt a new Thief would sell as a pure FPS, so a Thief with as-good sneaking mechanics and the mobility of Assassin's Creed it'd truly kick ass.

Thief 3 was dissapointing. The problem I had with the game mostly, is how I always kept on hoarding my weapons and items, unlike Thief 1 and 2 where you always had a new weapons and items each level.

Poor Looking Glass Studios, if I knew how Ion Storm was going to fuck up your Thief 3 I would have done something sooner...

Thief 4 and Deus Ex 3!? Sounds like an orgy of awesome. I didn't mind Deadly Shadows too much. It wasn't quite the same as Thief 1 & 2, but I still enjoyed it.

@Chronic Logic: I've generally always stuck to the same three weapons (arrows, moss arrows, water arrows) in Thief anyways, so the lack of new stuff didn't really bother me.

@lastdual: A loadout system would be nice, too.

I sure as hell hope it's Thief 4. I love that series. I just hope it wouldn't turn into an Assassin's Creed clone.

Wow. I never thought I would see another Thief game ever.

Moving onto important matters, Ken Levine + System Shock 3? Please EA? PLEASE?

I hope it's not another thief game. They will be using Thief 3 as a benchmark, not 1 and 2 (unless they issue a statement to that effect). I think Thief 3 sold better than 1 and 2, so financially it makes more sense to carry on the dumbed down formula, making the game far too easy.

Lay it to rest Eidos, and let us enjoy out Thief 1, 2 and 2X.
