Eidos' Batman: Arkham Asylum revealed (Update) photo

Who needs a videogame based on a movie? Game Informer has just revealed that its next issue will blow the lid off the previously unannounced Eidos-published title, Batman: Arkham Asylum

Developed by Rocksteady Studios (whose only known title is the 2006 PlayStation 2 and Xbox game, Urban Chaos: Riot Response), Arkham Asylum is a entirely original title that will explore the halls of Gotham's infamous nut-house for the criminally insane. The story involves a routine prison transfer going awry, and has the Caped Crusader going head-to-head with his nastiest foes.

The game is said to have a dark, gritty feel similar to 2K Boston's BioShock, and is being penned by Paul Dini, whose previous work includes Batman: The Animated Series. No specific platforms have yet to be mentioned. More information can be found in the upcoming issue of Game Informer, which has yet to hit newsstands, but will likely be scanned and posted in its entirety on NeoGAF two weeks before it even goes to print.

Based on the artwork alone, we're excited, but that could just be Dark Knight-fever kicking in. So, who's got high hopes for this one?

[Update: Rocksteady Studios has some sort of Batman-related counter up on their official Web site. It's a big number, and it's counting down relatively fast -- anyone care to do some math? -- Thanks, Action-Bastard!]

Paul Dini, eh? Anyone involved with Batman: TAS knows what they're doing, so I'm cautiously optimistic.

Dini is a talented fellow, definitely a sign it will be quite promising.

So are Eidos and Pandemic developing two totally different Batman games at the same time, or has Pandemic's been officially canned?

I don't think the Pandemic game officially exists. :D

Sound a bloody cool game though... can't wait to find out more about it. I wonder if the Bioshock comments means an Art Deco edge, judging by the gates from the Batman cover. Or perhaps I'm reading too much into small details...

Well, the second column from right is obviously seconds, so...math!

681.423 million+ seconds => 11,357,050 minutes => 189,284.167 hours => 7,886.84 days => 21.6 years

In other words, by the time that countdown hits zero, I will be over twice my current age. Scary.

This sounds excellent. Im glad the game isnt being made about the movie but will still no doubt make loads of money because of the movie. I would love to see this start a trend of games being related to recent movies but not direct adaptations. Ill probably be let down though.

did it again. this time i got over a month before we did it. forgot to take minutes at 60 and then those 60 making another for an hour... so hopefully that's more accurate and we'll hear something in a month?

i didn't pass math in college, so someone correct me.

@Unicorn: I'd like to see your process, friend-o (especially if you got three different results after three separate calculations). The countdown clearly has the right amount of digits to be in the hundred millions (discounting the last column, which appears to be tenths of seconds). Check out this link for the end result of all my math.

681421737 / 60 (into minutes) / 60 (into hours) / 24 (into days) / 7 (into weeks) / 52 (weeks in a year) = 21.667

fuck. that's the formula when i write it down.. i should've done that from the start. hahaha but yeah. i guess in 21 years we'll find out. previously i tried doing it by 30 (for months) and some other weird divisions that are whack now that i think about it.
WutDaHeckMan's Avatar
WutDaHeckMan at 08/12/2008 16:55
It wont be exclusive, but the wii version will be tooned down like Ghostbusters became.

I imagine this game being like Batman Lego + Escape from Bug Island. Both games I have never played mind you.
Unicorn's Avatar
Unicorn at 08/12/2008 16:56
ok. divide that 21.667 by 12 (months in a year) and i got 1.8, so i think i'm onto something. in about 2 years now. that's way more reasonable. right? about 2 years until it's released or we hear more in regards to a ship date?
Xzyliac's Avatar
Xzyliac at 08/12/2008 17:08
You think maybe the countdown isn't actually counting down to zero but some other (relatively large) number? Maybe it's a reference or something from the comics? Quick! Any important numbers in the Batman universe!?!

That places it coming in end of October/Beginning of December

You'd think it was merely 11 weeks. You'd be wrong. I tested it, and what Gynecologist says checks out. I went only 2 years ahead, and it didn't even move that 6 over there at the end of the fucking countdown.

Seriously, 21 years? What the fuck.

I am buying this. They could announce it will come out only on a brand new console, three times as expensive as the PS3, for which no other games will ever be made, and I would buy it.

...okay that might be a bit of hyperbole on my part, but still.
