Eidos announces Gauntlet coming to the DS

Funny thing, I was just thinking about this a few days ago. I played Gauntlet on Xbox Live Arcade and found myself wondering why I can't play it on my DS (through non-illegal means, that is.) Per Robert Lindsey, executive VP of sales and marketing for Eidos, they will soon be offering a totally revamped version of the original Midway arcade title. Wait. Revamped?

I guess I was kind of hoping to play the original with wireless capability....but that's ok. Much like Rampage, another arcade favorite, I helplessly play every incarnation of the series regardless of how crappy it may end up being. Call it an obsession. We'll see how it ends up this summer, when the game hits store shelves. As long as they don't cut out the awkward status announcements ("Valkyrie is abut to die!"), I'll give it a spin.

How do you insert coins though? Will there be a peripheral?

Oddly, I read about this in the latest Nintendo Power a few days ago. Look at that, they had news of a game release before I read about it here.

They did say in the article that the "revamping" is just re-making it in 3-D, and allowing you to see more of the dungeon (both screens will show what is going on). And the status announcements are supposed to be in it...that alone put it on my "must-buy" list.

The article isn't in front of me, so I can't say much more than that about it.

I love the Gauntlet games, except for that last one for Xbox. I'll more than likely get this, as the original is all kinds of fun with others in tow, but I would really like a new Gauntlet in the vein of Gauntlet Dark Legacy. I want to play as a Jester again damn it!

My friends and I played the shit out of the N64 Gauntlet. We spent one weekend playing straight through it. We had unlocked everything and done everything you could possibly do in that game. Then we challenged the final boss... We all used our special attacks at the same time, and the game froze up (we didn't have an N64 expansion pak). It was, humbling? Not a word was spoken, we just looked at each other, then I calmy stood up and shut off the console and we all went to sleep.

No thanks. Bloody boring game. Have it on PS3 from the PSN and was sad about how little it had to offer for entertainment.

I wouldn't mind having a crack at the game, so long as it doesn't suck.

Old game is old, even with "revamped" graphics.

I remember when gauntlet was a new game, and even I realise that its long past its prime. There are literally a kajillion top down MP shooters made after it which boot all over Gauntlet, and once the retro cool trip wears off, you will realise that you have only played it for 15 minutes and are bored shitless.

It would be nice to see devs inventing new and interesting games instead of retreading the same old trash from the 80s and charging full price for it.
