The Wii has earned a reputation as a beacon for some of the laziest shovelware ever to be thrown at a game system. It's not really Nintendo's fault, but the fault of third party hacks who are using the Wii's popularity and the general intelligence of the mainstream public to mass produce crap for everyone's favorite white box o' waggle. However, according to analyst firm EEDAR, things are getting better.
EEDAR used the most trustworthy and incontrovertible proof there is -- review scores -- to show that quality on the Wii is improving. Looking at the numbers on the above fancy chart, you can see that Xbox 360 and PS3 games have been earning consistent review scores from 2008 to 2009. The Wii, meanwhile, has seen a dramatic rise in numbers over the past year, although its games still aren't getting the same averages as the other consoles.
Of course, review scores don't really prove anything, but fanboys cling to them like limpets. They're sure to be thrilled by the news that the Wii is getting games almost as good as Xbox 360 and PS3 ones. Hooray!

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
That is a HUGE jump for the Wii in one year.
anyway, interesting stuff.
I'm glad the ridiculous flood of shovelware seems to have slowed. I'm also glad the MS and Sony seem to have pretty decent quality control over their games.
also ps3 == qualiteh
I think some reviewers overrated a few Wii titles, especially the Conduit. To me, the jump in quality on this truth graph is questionable.
There are (and always have been) many quality titles on the Wii. It's just that the extreme popularity of it has caused tons of companies to throw tons of crappy games on it for a quick profit. It's the same with every popular system in the past. Now, the low quality games are being released less often and the real games are standing out more as a result.
1. It doesn't account for games that don't get reviews.
2. It doesn't account for the reviewer preference - Which means that games like Mario Kart Wii and Wii Fit, far more popular titles than Grand Theft Auto 4, are very undertracked. I extend this undertracking to the entire Wii library because it is safe to say that any game like Mario Kart Wii or Wii Fit would get undertracked also due to reviewer preference (reviewers who often value different qualities in games than customers).
As a pessimist, I must inform you that the last two games to get a metacritic aggregated review score of 90 or higher were Metroid Prime Trilogy and World of Goo. The last full retail game that was not a remake/compilation of an older game to get a metacritic review score of 90 or above was Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
In other words, the Wii a sea of mediocrity rather than a sea of shovelware. Unless you, unlike most review sites, recognize that Wii Sports Resort is in fact an excellent title, much like the original Wii Sports revolutionized the game industry. In which case, the Wii is not a sea of mediocrity, but rather the reviewer doesn't recognize as important the qualities you find most valuable in a game. In which case, most reviewers are way to out of touch with the common man, soccer mom, grandparent, and child to be useful in determining the quality of a game anyway.
Did you know that when an analyst gets quoted for saying something stupid, it is the sign of a bad/lazy journalist? Any good journalist would recognize the quote as not news worthy, and not have put it up in the first place, rather than give free publicity to the analyst. On the other hand, a lazy or bad journalist sees the quote, thinks it to be an easy story, and publishes it.
The fact that dust collects on systems that are played disagrees with your BS.
And honestly, I love all the great Nintendo series' but I find myself wondering if I still believe that or if I'm just telling myself that.
I still haven't even opened Super Mario Galaxy, never finished Super Mario Sunshine or the recent Metroid Primes. Only played Super Smash Bros. for maybe an hour with friends.
I think Nintendo needs new IP games. Not to mention some sort of freakin' 720p(1080p I'll never expect)
