EEDAR reports 37% of 2009 Wii games went unreviewed photo

We joke about all the shovelware on the Wii around here, but seriously ... its kind of out of control just how much there is. This recent report from EEDAR really nails it: while 3% of the 360 titles and 9% of PS3's titles went unreviewed so far this year, the Wii weighed in at a whopping 37% of games unreviewed. Even worse, that went up 12% from last year, where 25% of the year's releases were more or less completely ignored by reviewers.

EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich did acknowledge that the general review score for a Wii game has gone up, but he also thinks it could be because more of them are being ignored entirely. He also comments further on Wii games getting better:

It is just coming at the cost of not reviewing the increase in casual and low-budget titles ... a  similar issue could appear with respect to PS3 and Xbox 360 as the consoles' casual demographics increase in conjunction with the continued growth of their install bases.

I want to beg developers to just spend more time on these games instead of shoving out uninspired projects and hoping for a quick return, but what do I know? I just play em, I don't make em.

60% of the unreviewed games must have babies and pony in their names.

And I think most shovelware devs. will consider no reviews is better than average of 0~10 out of 100 in metacritic.

Maybe its because wii games as a whole are pretty much comin right in at around suck level and reviewers already know that this continuing strain of garbage is bad for their(and our)health.

shovelware isn't anything new. it's been an industry standard since atari. this is never going to change. it just so happens that the wii has a stranglehold on the market, therefore, they get the lions share of crap titles. this isn't to say that the 360 or ps3 don't have their share of shlock, it's all in line with marketshare, folks. nothing new

Technically, the quantity of shovelware is irrelivent in the face of quality, and 3 good games among 10 versus 3 good games among 20 makes no difference; it's still 3 good games.

That said, I think there are only a couple of developers that "get" the wii, and many of them make titles that while historically get bad reviews, are popular because they provide a style of entertainment the more traditional games ignore. The rest are from companies that don't understand the wii, and thus fail. But the Wii is one of the stronger examples of conflicting views between reviewer and audience.

@sheppy I just watched the "walk it out" commercial... Are people seriously willing to pay 29.99 for the privilege of pretending to walk in an atrociously ugly virtual world while listening to crappy cover music? God, probably! Maybe Konami should make a game called "flush it down" where the player plays a constipated individual and must waggle the wii mote to simulate pushing fecal matter out of his/her anus... while listing to crappy cover music

But seriously, the wii is the most successful console out right now so the amount of shovelware is not all that surprising (but quite depressing)

This may also have something to do with the fact that the Wii's user base consists largely of casual gamers. Casual gamers that buy games on a whim and have no interest in reading gaming magazines/websites. If there's no-one to read the reviews, then why waste the time writing them?

Holy shit. I knew it was bad but...damn.

I just thought all the unreviewed games meant I wasn't paying attention.

Gee, could it possibly be that we're sick and tired of Waggle-ware and Shovel-ware?

Oh, the SHOCK!

"Gee, could it possibly be that we're sick and tired of Waggle-ware and Shovel-ware?"

So will the same thing be said about the PS3, and 360 next year? I bet Motion Party gets reviewed on the PS3, when the Sony Waggle Wand comes out and I bet Rickashay the wiggle-ware tech demo gets reviewed when it comes out. The video game industry is just filled with double standards. Most of the shovelware shit still got reviewed on the PS2 last gen. They got crappy reviews as deserved, but most of them still got reviewed none the less!

You have too note that the same number of games were reviewed though, so really it's just that more games came out not less reviews.... I think it's a good thing that the crap doesn't get reviewed, cause it's not needed and hopefully they'll stop making so much of it :P

That being said someone review Mad Dog Mcree it's not shovelware and it's awesome fun :|

OK lets take one game on both the Wii, and 360 for example. Brave: A Warrior's Tale is a poorly rated game on both systems, but on the 360 it has 14 reviews and only 11 on the Wii, which the Wii's average is 49% and the 360 is only 44%. How come outlets like Play Magazine rated it for the 360 but not the Wii? If its shovelware shit on the Wii, than its the same shit for the 360, yet they review it for one over the other.

I think that's what people have a problem with when it comes to Wii reviews. None of these media outlets review all the games and as such, they miss out on some of the good ones that should have been reviewed. Yet when a good game comes out for the Wii, you have these ridiculous nobody sites coming out of the woodwork to rate the game down, just because its on the Wii.

@ brainderailment

I disagree, on the basis that all the good games on the wii have sold quite well. It's only mediocre games that don't sell, like Mad World, Muramasa, Zack & Wiki, Conduit, etc.

These titles are all being pushed out by the folks in marketing and finance. The programmers, designers, and artists working on those games probably don't have a choice.

So hate the game, not the developer. ;)

I wonder how the Nintendo DS would fare in this statistic, with all the Imagining and animals with the letter z slapped at the end. Oh, and Elf Bowling (but that was reviewed).
