Ed Boon knows Mortal Kombat will be better than Street Fighter photo

The guys at ArsTechnica have recently done their part to help rekindle the feud between Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. Years ago, when Mortal Kombat was shiny, new, and very gory Ed Boon and Capcom had quite the verbal sparring match. At this year’s Comic-Con, it looks as if Boon is not ready to hang up his gloves quite yet. When asked by Eurogamer if Mortal Kombat versus DC Universe was still in the running against the Street Fighter series, Boon had this to say:

I think just from the history, we do. I think we'll kick their ass.... we're a wilder ride—a big rollercoaster ride—and they're a little bit tamer.
Capcom community manager Seth Killian had this when prompted at Capcom’s booth:
You can't touch the mechanics of Street Fighter, and [SFIV] is really channeling back the classic mechanics that ignited the world... Mortal Kombat was riding the coattails of Street Fighter then, and I think Mortal Kombat may be riding the tails of Street Fighter as we move into 2009.
Personally, I’m a bigger Mortal Kombat fan. Street Fighter IV is looking very smooth, but I’ll take split-punches and spears over fireballs any day of the week. What do you guys prefer?

[Thanks, TrailerParkJesus!]

I like Mortal Kombat more, but I still think Street Fighter IV is going to come out on top.

I don't think the comparison is far. Mortal Kombat has moved on from trying to copy Street Fighter and failing to trying to copy Tekken and Soul Caliber and failing.

I love SF. MK... not so much.

Lamest looking vs. lame looking, what a contest!

Now where is our Tatsunoko vs. Capcom?

I never liked Mortal Kombat, and I still think it plays like ass. Street Fighter wins.

If I still liked fighters I would have to say SF, especially if it harkens back to the glory days which I would imagine it does. The last MK game I played (Armageddon?) singlehandedly made me lose interest in the fighting genre. Is that fair? Probably not. Is that a testament to just how awful MK has gotten (at least IMO)? It certainly does.

I lost a lot of interest in the Mortal Kombat series when it seemed they were paying more attention to novelty than tightening the gameplay. Also, the numerous palette swaps and attempts at "real 3D" never sat well with me.

Though to be fair, this new game could end up addressing all of those problems and be a great deal of fun. Still to early to make those kinds of calls.

I just lost all respect for Ed Boon. Street Fighter IV is proof that Capcom used a new engine. Rather than recycling one engine like the Mortal Kombat series has been doing for awhile now. :P

Mr. Boon fails at life. Mortal Kombat has been riding the coat tails of Street Fighter for ages!!!!!! MK VS DC is a blatant attempt to fill the void left by the lack of another Capcom Vs. game. Mortal Kombat fails. DC fails. Fail + fail = utter fail!!! FANBOY ATTTTAAACK!! I know people at Midway, and even they hate the game.

Damn Ed Boon, you tripping big time.

Mortal Kombat was always a bad cash in, on the popularity of beat em ups. SF2 started the trend, but MK with its ten tons of tackiness, is the joke of the beat em up world still.

Capcom's kung fu is too strong for you, Ed. Get used to getting owned.

The new MK is a T for Teen. It looks as mediocre as the last 6, while the people that have played Street Fighter IV say that it plays like Street Fighter 2. Depends on what you prefer.

Cowboy TTop: They are fighting games, not beat'em ups. Beat'em ups are things like Final Fight and Double Dragon.

On the subject though, MK was always flash with no substance. Capcom should just ignore them.

I was a big fan of MK ultimate edition. It had everyone! I will say that the biggest hook to me was Marvel vs. Capcom 2, which essentially came to be through the SF series, so SF wins.

MK fails for needing a block button and screwed up commands. Somehow, quarter circle forward is much easier than back, ack, down, low punch. Also, SF has always had better art and art direction.

The whole "versus DC" idea isn't very appealing for me. DC isn't even that great anyway. I've always liked SF better. Ed Boon fails.

The home version of SF IV will have Dan Hibiki so MK vs. DC must have Cage if they even hope to compete.

Are you people fucking kidding me?

Mortal Kombat was always ONLY about the FATALITIES. Without the fatalities the games look and play like utter fucking garbage pail SHIT.

Street Fighter and Capcom have spawned many much better games BY FAR.

Ed Boon is just bitter.

I can't believe there is anybody out there who could say MK with a straight face. I mean.. maybe back when MK first came out, and both series were young, innocent, and none too polished... In those days of yore, the gore of MK certainly helped....

But now.. no nononononononoonononono

SF is an infinitely better series.

Mortal Kombat isn't even in the same legue as Street Fighter as far as I'm concerned.

I liked MK back in the day, and did indeed spend some coin at the MK2 arcade machine, but then the novelty of all the gore and fatalities wore off. And since my 23 year old self isn't nearly as impressed by the gushing blood as my 10 year old self was, MK has nothing to offer me but poor gameplay.

Street Fighter on the other hand, is still as awesome as ever. Not only does it still have the best gameplay of all fighting games, it has, by far, the best soundtrack.

It might be my mancrush on Ryu talking, but Street Fighter is the shit. <3

So yeah, MK will always be a joke of a fighter.

...only MK game worth being put up to any SF game is MK1 and MK2. Everything else after that is trash.

The fact Ed Boon still thinks it holds a candlelight to the SF series is quite funny.

Street fighter is more game for competitions as there is a technically prowess involved with being a great street fighter player...mortal combat on the other hand is more accessible and good for people who aren't into fighting games like tekken, street fighter, or guilty gear which require timing and a good ability to read your opponent.

Ed Boon must know this for one reason and one reason alone: he's not making any more MK games, and thus, they will be free from his ruinous clutches.

MK has always been a button mashing game, it will never change, and the fact that they add characters like Batman wont make it any better. Ed Boon has always been a dumb ass, saying that his favorite characters of the MK series were Noob Saibot, Sub Zero, Scorpion, because they have moves that let you have a "free hit". Watch some of his videos about MK...hes stupid.

Even though Capcom has been making me mad with all these stupid Installs, I'll take SF...

By themselves, I would say Mortal Kombat would take the cake.... until their foray into 3d.

Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe is a game that's about 7 years late to the 'X vs. Y' party. Again, Mr. Boon, what have you done to my beloved Mortal Kombat?

Wow...this debate seems very one-sided. For my part, I prefer Mortal Kombat, because it was always more fun. Really, it's as simple as that. I play games for fun, Mortal Kombat is more fun for me, therefore, I prefer to play that. Especially with the new games. Nothing about SFIV has really drawn me in thus far other than the new art style. It seems like the developers of MK are more willing to do crazy crap with their games, and I appreciate that.

SF vs MK kinda reminds me of the on-going Xbox vs Playstation. Now if only they were exclusive on the competing systems then we'd have a fanboi war on our hands.
