Idea! Price games according to popularity. Highly anticipated sequels like Modern Warfare Future Soldier Kill Bad Guy X should be priced at $80-$100, while new IP's should be priced at $20-$30 and only mid range fairly popular games should be priced at $60.
The PC is at the forefront of implementing proper pricing, largely due to digital distribution sales and the massive number of indie and small developers who understand how to price their games (Magicka is STILL selling at $9.99). Digital distribution, unlike retail, allows games to sell for much longer and lowering price causes a much greater increase in profits, so it's beneficial to stray away from standard prices.
We're seeing the upping of prices with many supposedly popular PC titles, although this is mostly bad implementation as publishers instantly assume that if it's marketed for console and ported to PC that PC gamers will shell out $60 for it even though it's not built for PC's. The only developers that can justify a $60 on PC are Blizzard and Valve.
Consoles still lag behind, but I'm sure we'll get digital sales in the future and console gamers and journalists will hail the revolution of digital distribution as Xbox Live 2 and PSN 2 start to actually compete while ignoring that Steam did it 5+ years earlier.
That said, I think $60 is fine. I just live perpetually 3 months behind released games and buy them for $20-40. People who want to spend $60 on day one can have at it.
My first reaction to you saying that modern warfare should be $80 to $100 was "Shut the fuck up, troll."
But then I realized that we can only hope that Bobby Kotick gets greedy and arrogant enough go try that price out. The glorious death of that shit series would come swiftly. games shouldnt be $60 unless you're getting 80+ hours or high replay value. If it's an FPS Roller coaster that focuses on online play, charge $40 and keep the gay online pass shit going. But $60 is just greedy when some of the games that come out are bargin bin material on release day.
I've been paying $50-$70 for games since the NES days. The fact that games are still in that price range despite the staggering increase in development costs is pretty incredible.
Well, people over in Europe already pay $100 so I dunno what your problem is with the price.
Also, if it is priced up, then it will encourage smaller developers to drop their own price to compete, which works best for everyone in the long run. The idiots will still buy their Call of Duty because they only buy 2 games a year (Call of Duty and Halo) so $100 isn't that much for them.
Games aren't a necessity. We don't need them. Gaming is a hobby and we know the price attached. I fail to see how that's in any way exploitative.
As for the price itself. I'm okay with 60$ games when they are good. When I think of Starcraft2, oh god, I got sooo many hours of pure gameplay out of it. But then there are titles like Mirror's Edge where I paid 70 euros for the PS3 version and was finished within 4 hours. That made me sooo pissed. 30$ on the other hand would be pretty okay and I guess more people would have ended up picking it up.
www.play.com, then just click games.
Latest CoD game? Sure charge the full £40. people will buy it.
Uncharted, Killzone, Halo, Gears - sure £40 why not.
But Naughty Bear?, The latest Annual sports game, the Mirror's Edge, the Alpha Protocol? Fuck no - that should be like at least 25% less.
then there are the movie tie in games and the kids shit - that should really be £20.
this whole ALL GAMES COST THE SAME AT LAUNCH system is completely fucking wrong.
1)Wait till it's on Amazon.com for cheaper.
2) Get Gamefly and rent...if you like then keep for cheap.
3)Used games~! Who care if someone played it before you o__o it's still the game game.
4)STEAM~! If you are a PC gamer steam is your best friend DISCOUNTS AND BOUNUSES GALORE :) unless you mind Steam DRM but that's not even that bad...cause there is offline mode.
5)G.O.G If your a fan of old games you shall love THIS O_O and it's DRM Free download and play them whenever you want...no need to install anything else. :~}
I think developers need to scale back their games. I know that's probably not a popular sentiment considering "mosre stuff" equates to a better game for much of today's audience, but do I really need to wander an enormous fucking desert in Red Dead? Or have a million asinine conversations that don't go anywhere in Mass Effect? I can understand the appeal, but when the result is a padded game and a higher price tag, I'm not convinced it's a good idea. Reel in game scope, lower the price a bit. That's my take.
I think we're also really lucky to have the online options of PSN and XBL with their lower priced gems. I loved Deathspank and think it was priced perfectly.
That being said, I do think some games would do better at the $40.00 price point if the content isn't there (or if the online is sub-par).
Get out. You pay $100 for games? Im sorry if that doesn't bother you, but it doesn't sit well with me. While you're definitely getting the short end of the stick, no video game should be priced that high. My problem is that the corporate side of the gaming industry is squeezing money out of people for increasingly shitty games.
On another note, these studio-heads love just blurting things out anymore thinking they single-handedly know what's best for every franchise and gamer. It's extremely easy (no pun intended) for Easy Studios to say games should be free-to-play when Electronic Arts is bankrolling your entire business model. I'd love to hear him say that as an independent developer.

Frankly, we should be thankful they haven't gone up more. $60 is not so bad, good grief people, you can pay $20 just to see a 1 and a half hour movie with a friend. If the game is good, you'll get way more value for your money.
A big issue with a AAA title, especially if it has multiplayer, would be fair play. What if paying players had better equipment in a shooter? Hell no.
Get a freakin' job, shop smart for deals, or just shutup. I don't make a lot money myself right (school,) but even so I still buy games when I can by shopping smart. It seems like every new game goes on a big sale near release. You dont even need to pay $60.
I'll stick with 60 dollar games (even though they should really be cheaper)
I was going to wait to purchase Borderlands but when I saw it for that $40 I just picked it up.
Some games are worth more than others but that is very subjective as I will spend $60 for Battlefield 3 but my buddy who loves RPGS and RTS games probably wouldn't pick it up at the $40 range.
The price for games hasn't changed much in the grand scheme of things.
What the fuck is exploitative about actually paying people for a product that they worked hard to make?
I totally agree. A progressive price model that reflects the developement cost and market for each game would make sense for publishers. Range their products from $10 - $60 based on those factors and not only would sales increase across the board, but the used game market that these publishers abhor would also be diminished. Midway attempted something like this when they released NARC fo the PS2, GC, & Xbox. It came out for $19.99 I believe, which prompted me to buy this otherwise lackluster game. And guess what? I had a little fun with it. Totally worth the $20. I wonder how it's sales were...
I would rather pay up front, get a quality narrative story with a beginning middle and end that has me gripped for the time I play it, then able to let it go, instead of being a prisoner to something like Farmville (or WOW for that matter).
I just checked the release date for Street Fighter 2...it was in like July of '92 almost 20 years ago! And it was 80 bucks!!!
Thank god for 4packs and steam sales.
EXACTLY. Games cost a shit ton more to make and are for the most part cheaper than they used to be.
I paid $80 for SSF2 & Chrono Trigger as well! Same with alot of N64 games, like Turok 2. Thing is, those were all expensive cartridges that had huge ROMS (for the time) in them. All of the games mentioned were the biggest carts out at the time. Today, with cheap optical media, the cost of production is far less. While I agree that alot of games are a bargain at $60, I still think (as does Sexual Chocolate) that a progressive retail system makes the most sense. Particulary in today's market with a large discrepancy between a small budget title and a AAA multi-million dollar title. I think alot of titles would be able to shine in the mid-market with that type of price structure. Also, isn't that how 2K Sports became the only serious competitor to EA Sports? They use to sell for $30 and were just as good EA's games... it was a great way to get there products sold and noticed against a huge sports game monopoly.
still i hope the price won't increase in the next generation, but then again, i won't be surprised if it did O_O
I might be wrong but if I remember correctly 2K games sold the football games for 20 bucks not 30.
