It's mostly my opinion on why I like Japanese games more. I'm not trying to state that being hardcore makes a game better. Still, I find it odd that almost every single game that I love, unquestionably, is Japanese.
That could be a big factor. I didn't really think of that, but my youth was mainly Japanese titles. I obviously got hardcore into the PC scene and did a lot of shooters, but I stuck with Id and EA. It wasn't until Call of Duty in 2003 that I started to open up a bit.
I just happen to believe the torch has been passed on. I really want japan to be great again too, but that's gonna take some time.
Now those games are why I'll always prefer east a little bit over west.
You want to obsess over japanese games? Fine, but don't paint the whole West with an absurdly broad brush. If you do, you'll be obliged to paint all of the Japanese with just as absurd a brush, saying that they're all a bunch of dating-sim-idol perverts who only take a break from those games to play pokemon.
Granted, we're talking about Japan essentially facing off against the whole of NA and Europe so resources aren't stacked in their favor. But very few Japanese titles adorn my shelves this generation and I grew up with an SNES and I loved FF and so on like many others.
Demon's Souls and Nier are, I think, the only Japanese titles I own. Love them to death and Dark Souls will join the ranks at launch. But the east just doesn't have it right now.
just let this issue die..............
Generalizations, cliches, falsehoods..........
its not right on either side..............
Just enough............
Theres innovative games on both sides of the pond on both consoles and handhelds. And then theres shit as well.
I wont get over it because all it does is promote bias.
@derpy
I love japanese character depth. Theres characters from many nes games that I still can remember what they looked like, said, and were even to this day because they were so memorable. But it depends on the game more than anything
And the west has nothing to compare to pokemon or monster hunter, or dragon quest or mario kart.
We are talking sales right?
yeah, of course some games don't have the same quality as before, but they have fewer games now, good and bad, just as america, with the diference that we have way more, so it's easier to pick the good ones and call it a "winner".
That isn't to say, in terms of gaming development, that the Japanese are not an accomplished people. Considering their population and country's size relative to the impact they make on this industry, I think a good case could be made for success in that respect. In the big picture, however, most of our modern, innovative titles originate in the West. While they may have been influenced to some degree by past Japanese games, I think most people will agree that Japanese developers today (barring the handful of those that like to push the limits) stick to safe genres or milk established franchises for all they're worth. Most of the innovative titles in Japan simply cater to a niche group of gamers and never see the light of day in the West.
The 360 is the only american console on the market, and it second to last in sales, barely edging out the PS3 it has such a massive edge over a few years ago.
As for game development, Ever hear of a game called Mario Kart Wii? It's destroyed pretty much every game the US released this gen in sales.
WiiFit? Japanese! Just go to VG Chartz, most of the games on the top 10 are Japanese. The only reason people think Japan is in a slump is because they have no big Shooters, and Shooters are the big thing now. But they dominate almost every other genre. And let's be honest, most of the big shooters, Mass Effect, Gears of War, Dead Space, and so on are inspired by Resident Evil 4... A japanese game.
And while I agree Japan has created some very iconic characters, when I think of iconic video game characters of the now there is only one that pops in my head: Master Chief. He's the only character who's even close to breaking into pop culture.
And while Ninja Gaiden is the best action game ever made, God of War is far and away the best action series. There is a level of quality there that has not been tainted by any half-ass sequel, and they're five games in and still going strong. I love Ninja Gaiden Black, but Team Ninja doesn't seem to have the magic anymore.
I will be checking out Yakuza. Sounds a little bit like Shenmue...
Wait. So your entire aguement for why Japan is fine is because they still have Mario, Zelda, Metroid and Donkey Kong to milk some more? Along with Street Fighter, DMC, MGS, etc.
Just because Nintendo can continue to sell their stuff off of iconic status and nostalgia doesn't mean that Japan is okay. Eventually Miyamoto is going to die. Eventually the early gamers are going to die. Eventually Mario and all of this is going to lose the luster and the love.
What else does Japan have? That's the issue here. Yes, they are still able to peddle the same old franchises. But are they doing anything new at all and doing it well?
No. Not really.
The fact is, by your stance, CoD means that west is king because it sells like crazy. But we all know that CoD is not western gaming any more than Mario is Japan. They are just established series that will continue to be successful. They do not represent the health of the respective regions in terms of innovation and future success.
simply taking mario as an example.. there have only been 4 3d mario games in the past 15 years.. on top of that.. outside of 2 of the games, theyre all largely different from one another. while on the other hand.. there are several series in the west that are at the forefront today are not only suffering from overexposure, but they also only copied other games that we've been playing the last few years (especially if you were a pc gamer in the 90s.. where the west flourished at the time).
its not so clear cut. both markets are stagnant.. theres very little innovation. ive seen assassins creed mentioned as an example for the greatness the west has created in the last few years.. while it may be a great series, its really just an action platformer with elements of stealth.im not even picking on how that game plays though.. i brought it up because it debuted in 2007, and by years end... there will be 4 games in the series. in contrast.. people want to point out at one of the writers examples (street fighter) as milking. although there have been 3 street fighters in the last 3 years, there was almost a decade where the series was unheard from.
im done ranting.. i think the east is a little behind due to technology, prices, and the western devs moving from the pc to the console and getting an overwhelmingly positive reaction. ever since microsoft made a console that popularized the shooter on consoles... its been hard for the east to compete. there are still plenty of japanese franchises that move a lot of copies though.
western developers have advantage in technology, but because they're making games with much bigger budgets - japanese games are developed in the way where japanese sales alone should make profit for the publisher aside basically from big franchises and games like Final Fantasy, Resident Evil or MGS that cater mostly to western public.
you look at some of those games and their sales predictions made by the publisher and there's hardly a console game that needs to sell more than 200-300k to make profit. now compare it to games like Shaun White that sold over 1.5mln copies on HD platforms and Ubisoft called it flops cause they've lost money on the game.
you God of War bit - so fuckin true. i always laugh when someone is comparing it to Ninja Gaiden. God of War is and always was basically Dynasty Warriors with better level design and graphics, but terrible camera and no RPG elements designed for the "win button" generation where it's all about "epic", dumbing down gameplay(or how they like to call it "streamlining") and no actual difficulty(simillar with Call of Duty games). i played all GoW games(and i've finished all except for 3rd one - it was so fuckin boring) spamming 3 maybe 4 attacks.
Then there's the slew of Nintendo games, probably still my overall favorite game maker and they're Japanese too. They have some western studios but they aren't behind anything this fall.
So for me I've managed to maintain a largely Japanese diet of games in a very western market, without being a pretentious Anime geek either. Rage does looks mighty tempting, but a new video card does not, so I'm probably going to stay on the beaten path that has rarely done me wrong. Even when everyone was crying the death of JRPGs, they were flourishing on mobile platforms, and Xenoblade is the sweetest RPG I've played in a long time on any platform. The decline of Japanese game design is highly exaggerated! It's not nostalgia!
Each side has their issues and benefits. The West is plagued by video game corporations (EA and Activision, just as examples.) that pretty much control their various studies to do what will garner them the most profit, not what benefits the gamer. They'll release new DLC that includes a few maps for 1/4th of what the game costs to buy and people will jump all over it, just because it's new and it's what all their friends are doing. In the East, they are producing games that may appeal to some people in the West, but not the vast majority. Games that are too cutesy or too "strange", just won't sell that well. I believe it also has to do with advertisement and people just not knowing about a game. Word of mouth will help a bit, but people just don't want to spend $60 on a game that they may or may not enjoy.
@NicJavelin: This isn't an argument. It's a list.
What ^they^ said.
This week's 'bloggers wanted' was a horrible topic because it always boils down to the Japanophiles (weeaboos) using Call of Duty and ONLY CoD, to explain why us White Devils (Gaijin) are the worst thing since Hiroshima.
For example: kazumakiriyuisgod registered on Dtoid just to call us 'american pussies'. I know American's aren't a race but I sure as hell put that statement in the same category of racism(read: I will ignore everything you say afterwards).
I would say 'good article' but as stated above, it's not really an argument, but rather a list of your favorite games. Which is fine.
" The number and quality of JRPGs today is much less than its heyday on SNES and PS"
this is actually false. Theres just as many. But they are on different platforms.
i'm sorry WHAT?!
DS had about 120-150 JRPGs released since launch, PSP 40-50, both HD platforms over 20, Wii 20-25. that's over 200 JRPG games(including both traditional and turn based) released this gen. and there you can find gems like Lost Odyssey, Xenoblade, Last Story, Valkyria Chronicles, Dragon Quest IX, Rune Factory, Contact, Inazuma Eleven, Ni No Kuni, Sigma Harmonics, SMT games, Solatorobo, Resonance of Fate, Nier etc.
i can list about 80+ japanese developed games released on consoles and handhelds this gen that are simply musthaves. do you know how many games developed by western teams that are absolute musthaves i can list? 20 maybe 30 titles.
Dont bother......most people here when they type they have no idea what they are talking about.

For anyone saying my blog lacked solid arguments, I definitely agree with you. I wasn't trying to state that the East is better, just that I prefer it more. This is all about why I think the East is better.
Also, I do enjoy Western games, to a degree. I can usually dig the first few sequels before I stop getting enjoyment out of it. Call of Duty, which is apparently the whipping boy now, is one of my favorite shooters until 4.
I will say that I didn't believe this was going to get promoted, but I put a lot more effort into this week's topic. I definitely believe everything I wrote here, but know that I will be trying much harder in the future.
Thank you for the support, though. Promotions always make my day.
