Earthworm Jim creator ... no friend to gay people? photo

Earthworm Jim creator Doug TenNapel is, apparently, a living parody of American bigotry. Recently, the artist made several amazing comments on the subject of Christianity, gay marriage, and why AMERICURRRR is the best damn country in the world.

When asked on what grounds he opposed gay marriage, TenNapel said, "The same argument I have against letting a man take a dump in the ladies room. And (sic) office appropriate for one sex isn’t automatically appropriate for another, no matter how much a man loves taking a dump in the ladies room."

Wow.

According to TenNapel, freedom of religion and expression is a completely alien concept to Canadians and Europeans, and America is the best country in the world because it's 78.5% Christian. This is the kind of outrageously stupid shit I get to see in local opinion columns and TV shows out here in Mississippi on a regular basis.

Whether he thinks he's being funny or not, Gay Gamer ain't laughing, and I'm inclined to agree with them. It's pretty sad to see such miserable opinions, especially from an otherwise talented guy, but gay people don't need to be angry about it. Gay marriage is going to happen anyway, because nobody, no matter how much they claim to have a deity on their side, can stop the march of social progress forever.

LGBT campaigners are fighting a fight they can only win. Their efforts determine the when, not the if. And that is, to quote Earthworm Jim, Grooooovy

Did you hear Doug TenNapel is secretly gay? It's only a matter of time before he's caught soliciting gay sex in a Milwaulkee airport bathroom.

"both sides are sickening. the only way to be right in this debate is to NOT GIVE A FUCK."

Usually I ignore your rambling, but I literally do not see how not giving a fuck about someone's rights is the only way to win this. Nor do I see how supporting the rights of LGBT people to marry who they like is "sickening." You're really gonna have to explain yourself on this one.

Every person's entitled to their opinion, but if you want me to buy your games, STFU about what you believe and produce high quality games. If your staff leaves due to your insane stance on sexuality, religion, etc; so be it. Perhaps you don't belong in business in the first place.

Sounds like he's being pretty serious, and he'll be happy to know I won't be supporting any potential future game project of his in the future for his stupidity. Same as I won't be supporting Shadow Complex for the same reasons.

Unfortunately and as rare as it is, talented creative people can be just as furious bigots as anyone else. I mean, just look at Orson Scott Card. The man can write! Doesn't stop him from being a bigoted right-wing homophobe, though.

Knowing that my money is partially going to an asshole that financially supported the Prop 8 anti-gay marriage bill is not a good feeling, so whenever I buy one that douche's books (or when I paid for Shadow Complex), I donate twice as much cash to an LGBT Support charity.

"Gay Gamer? I'm more surprised that that exists. Does being gay really affect your views on gaming that much?"

I once had a conversation with some people from Gay Gamer about this topic, and they had great arguments in support of self-identification. The chief topic is the fact that they're a near-totally unconsidered demographic. Most games, and resulting game blogs, are catered entirely to straight gamers. I think it's perfectly acceptable for a site to cater to a particular demographic.

No, it doesn't change the content of a game, nor does it particularly affect one's enjoyment of most of them, but there's definitely a a difference when it comes to the communities. Just look at XBL users and their rampant homophobia to see why.

You can also look back through some old posts where my random article headers have been of men making out. Some of the opinions expressed in the comments are why sites like Gay Gamer are a good thing.

He just lost all of my buisness for whatever he does in the future. I loved Earthworm Jim when I was younger but to see the creator of something as outrageous and crazy as that series pretty much outright bashing homosexuality leaves me feeling quite a bit empty. I agree that he has an opinion, and that because it is against something that I am all for doesn't make it automatically wrong, but to sit there and compare it to taking a shit in the women's bathroom makes absolutely no sense what so ever. Gay Marriage will happen, humanity will continue to progress socially at a snails crawl, but it still makes me sad to hear things like this from such talented artists.

No one is arguing he doesn't have a right to say this crap.

We also have the right to see the crap he's saying, and point it out for the utter crap it is.

Freedom of speech works both ways: People can say stupid crap, and we get to call it stupid crap.

"Freedom of speech, people. I don't agree with his view, but he has the right to say it. Those who champion free speech often attempt to silence others."

He absolutely has the freedom to say it. Others have the freedom to call him a cunt for it. I often find that people who defend their opinions by crying "free speech" misunderstand what the term means. It does not mean you get to say whatever you like unchallenged.

"Gay marriage is the pinnacle of social progress?"

I never said it was the pinnacle. I said it's inevitable because society is always progressing. Social progress won't end with gay marriage. It'll keep on marching forward.

@ mattrodroid - Yeah, I kind of feel the same way. It's as if people want to align themselves with a cause just to make themselves feel important. When one of the Wachowski brothers had a sex change, (s)he didn't go on Oprah and make a scene about it. It was a personal decision, people respected it, and it hasn't been an issue. Hell, most people don't even know it happened.

As far as this little bit of controversy, who gives a fuck what the creator of Earthworm Jim thinks? It's not like he's going to lead gaming culture one way or another anyway. He's just some irrelevant twat with a loud mouth. Publicizing his senseless crap just strengthens his platform. Remember people, don't feed the trolls.

Look: As I said before, it is stupid crap what this man is saying.

On the other hand: If you were to avoid any and all material of which its creator had political views you either disagreed with or found repulsive, you'd be bored half the time.

Will Wright is a pretty economic conservative. I find his economic views outdated and disproven, with not a shred of credibility left in them thanks to the last couple of decades.

However, I love Sim City to death.

Plato's Republic is some the strongest, evilest proto-fascist bullshit at times, openly calling for the censorship of music and art which will not help build nice little robot soldiers for their perfect state.

However, it's still one of my favorite books, just for how beautifully it's written, and it's downright interesting.

But at the same time, if people don't want to support those things (since Will Wright is quite a noticeable Republican donor, so all that money from Sim City is going to elect people you might not like very much), they have a right to know where their money will be going and can choose not to support that by not purchasing their material.

Freedom works both ways guys. You have the freedom to do and say what you want. People also have the freedom not to use their money to propagate those things.

Besides, Earthworm Jim was lame. There, I said it.

gay rights aren't some huge hurdle anymore. People are acting like they're some advocate for gay rights when gay rights are mainstream now, so all these tom, dick, and harry's preaching this and that about same sex marriage when they have all the rights they've bitched about. Now we're stuck on semantics...and the wording of the word marriage. I think its trivial, as I accepted gayness a LONG time ago.

so when i come on a GAMING site and see people trying to get all pissy about someone standing for something they believe in, then it appalls me. He has just as much right not to agree with gay marriage as someone has to want gay marriage. Hypocrites for the fucking lose.

The only way his argument is like taking a dump in a ladies room is if the shit coming out of his mouth was being said while standing in a ladies room.

If you look at the people who start cults("religions"), they're almost always pedophiles. There's a decent chance that Jesus was just some guy trying to fuck kids. Can we please stop using his religion as the authority on sexual morality?

And what does freedom of speech have to do with anything? Who's arguing that TenNapel shouldn't be allowed to say these things? Why is freedom of speech always brought up everytime someone says something controversial; even if no one is denying them their right to say it?

We really needed to pick out a single game creator who decides to take a stance on something deemed silly by most? Why the hell is this write up even in existence. Seems some one would have to have a stick up their butt about Doug to bother going out of their way to write about this. Why not pick a more worthy target like Westboro Church and spend your time snickering at their beliefs. Thanks Mr. Sterling for wasting 2 minutes of my life.
