Earn your stripes has a whole new meaning: The NES badge photo

The original Nintendo Entertainment System has spawned everything from tremendous recreations to backpacks and still remains my favorite icon in gaming history. There are very few dedications to the controller that have the retro element and also manage to be classy, but this badge from Supermandolini manages to pull off both and make it look effortless to boot.

What makes this piece even cooler is that it is the first in a limited edition series called Console Wars. Supermandolini describes it as "The first in a series of limited edition pin 'medals' that celebrate the memories of endless epic battles, infinite high scores and numerous blistered fingers." I couldn't have put it better myself.

This little guy will run you about €18, which rounds out to about $35.27 in US dollars. Not too shabby a price to earn your stripes (and considerably less painful than boot camp.) I'm going to finish this post and then I'm going promptly to the site to order myself one. I can't think of a better way to proudly declare to the world that I survived the retro console wars.

Wow, thank you new millennium for bringing us this self-indulgent crap. This is sorta a step above the Nintendo patches, but way below the ironic Nintendo shirts.

I can't possibly be the only person who thinks that looks distinctly Nazi, can I?

I mean, I'm all over the idea itself, but... eesh, that needs a redesign.

It is a little pricey, but I feel like it's worth it. The company is out in Greece, so I know I won't see a lot of people wearing them. Plus I'm a whore for NES stuff. ^__^

Also, is it possible that this design was inspired by the comments in one RFGO Podcast about a badge for surviving the console wars?

You know, private first class in the 8-Bit Division or whatever.

I'm sorry but it is much closer to a US air force distinguished flying cross rather anything with a nazi cross on it. nes medal ftw!

Chad? Chad Concelmo are YOU READING THIS? I see a possible retro quiz prize in this. Actually, this is perfect for that. In case you were wondering.

Maybe I'll send him one with explicit instructions and sit that quiz out. It would be FUN!

This needs to be earned rather than sold.

Have different styles, the better ones be for harder challenges.
Also, I too am awaiting those retroforce shirts proclaiming my Sega-Affiliation from the 16 bit era. THough now it's like how vets go visit the peaceful parts of Nam and make their peace, I to have made my peace with the SNES. Not that I ever had much against it, it's just I was a sega kid.

@32KOFDATA:

Sorry dude, with those colours, it's clearly German at the very least. You might be able to make the argument that Germany used the black/white/red and similar shapes before WWII -- the NSDAP basically took old designs and added swastikas -- but still... I think we all know where the designers took their inspiration.

... not that there's anything wrong with that ;)

I believe that they respected the color scheme of the pad and the console which includes loads of black/red/white on there too otherwise it wouldn't look nes-ish. The grey plastic is the missing color but I can't see it working well in the pin. It would be too dull :)

The Iron Cross is NOT a Nazi insignia. It's a traditional Prussian/German military symbol, still used today as the emblem of the German armed forces (Bundeswehr). As a medal, the Iron Cross still exists, but it hasn't been awarded since the end of WW2 because it's a wartime-only decoration.
