Earn credits playing StarCraft at UC Berkeley ... no, seriously photo

If you have ever dreamed of discussing videogames during class without looking like that guy, you'll be pleased to know that UC Berkeley is now offering a course on StarCraft.

Although I can easily picture the class instantly filling up due to students thinking that it will be a walk in the park, the syllabus makes the course sound pretty technical. You aren't just playing StarCraft for credits here -- you are also looking at the game's inner workings and the science behind it.

Honestly, the class would go way over my head to the point where I probably wouldn't enjoy it very much, but I can see how serious real-time strategy players would love enrolling.

Games in a college class are nothing new :D I took a course at Rice University titled "How to Kill a Dragon".

Basically, we were supposed to learn about collecting data and testing hypotheses using World of Warcraft (damage parsers etc). It was basically an excuse to play instances for homework, and since the class was paid for by the University, I got a free copy of WoW. :D

Easiest A+ ever.

OMG!!!!!!! i sure wish i went to a prestigious school like Berkley where you can graduate by playing video games. i am jealous cuz we don't do this at my school, but deep down somewhere in my jealousy i do support this.

That's really interesting, and a pretty good idea. If there are film studies courses in college campuses, I don't see the big problem in adding courses like this. Though, being so specific on one game is a little off of what I would imagine classes being based around.

I hope we see more of these courses popping up in Universities over the next few years, it's great to take a more analytical look at video games.

That course is probably a lot tougher than it looks, Starcraft is pretty deep afterall.

I think the coolest courses I had were "Horror in American Culture" and "Rock Music Since the 1950s." NVGR.

Also, could this mean that we're one step closer to actually seeing Jim Sterling, Professor of Sonicology?

@Char: And Colette could teach a course on Final Fantasy, Topher on Shmups, and Rev. Anthony on Indie Games.

Destructoid University, if you will.

I've played this game casually since it was released, but I follow the Korean Pro scene. This game is very deep and new builds orders and strategies are still being developed and innovated.

About a month ago Terrans have been using mech instead of bio against zerg players. Mech has been used before but it never was this successful against zerg. As of now there is still no viable counter to this new trend for zerg players but I do think there will be one very soon.

I'm sure almost nobody here knows what I'm talking about but that's ok lol. If you are interested in the slightest bit, sc2gg has english commentaries covering the Korean starcraft scene.

That's...incredibly interesting. My school didn't have anything like that (that I know of). >\

Though I wouldn't presume the game--er, course to be a cakewalk, it would be a pretty interesting experience all the same.

Well...I just found out about this from my old starcraft clan forum I visit now and then, and...well felt obligated to make a quick blog on it, then noticed this had already been posted, ah well.

Anyways, I think its pretty cool, and being a guy who did play Starcraft pretty heavily up to even two years ago, I can imagine the class could get a bit overwhelming, hopefully you don't pass or fail depending on if you get your actions per minute up high enough, cause really playing that game at a high level isn't for everybody, not even gonna get into the pro level.

This makes me wanna go play it some...its been a good 2 months since I last went on Bnet.

I love games and all, but this seems a bit much. Sounds like just playing the game and trying to get better for the most part. I guess you could apply the math they mention in the syllabus to it, but that seems rather unnecessary. The only thing I think might be difficult is coming up with a truly original 'contribution to the community'.

I'd be more likely to compare it to a sports practice than a film studies class.

Alright, as an undergrad at Berkeley, I need to explain this. Since the 60's, with all the hippy stuff, Berkeley has allowed undergrads to teach courses to their fellow undergrads. DECals, they call them. Gaming ones have been around for a while now, and really, this isn't too much of a surprise.

Actually, I'm thinking about teaching one myself: Ayn Rand and Bioshock: a narrative analysis. Next fall, for reals.
