Asking Electronic Arts if they'd like to charge for extra gameplay additions is perhaps a bit like asking a member of The Rolling Stones whether they'd like to f*ck a barely legal crackhead. Regardless, EA has answered that question in the affirmative as CEO John Riccitiello has confirmed that he'd simply love to sell us extra parts for Spore. Did anybody expect he'd be sad about such an idea?
"I would love to imagine that two years from now or a year from now the debate is whether or not we need a 'Spore' label inside of EA," stated the EA Warlord. He added that he'd enjoy the ability to "monetize, if you will, body parts, plant parts, car parts and planets as a way to generate incremental revenue on an installed base of several million active users."
"But it's a little bit like pool. I'm afraid if we spend too much time setting up the second shot, we'll miss the first shot. Right now, it's all hands on deck to make September 7 the event that matters."
Kind of brings new meaning to phrase "paying an arm and a leg," no?

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

Paying for things you believe you shouldn't have to pay for: Priceless
There are some things money can't buy. Too bad you have to buy them anyway.
I don't think I've ever seen a news article open with such a winning line. Bravo sir Jim, bravo.
September 30, 2008:
OHHH SHHHHH----
Speaking of hustling...
I'm unsure if Jim slept with Mr. OK's mother, but the blog stalking is making me want to facepalm myself.
I think that you have a very weird understanding of the word "decent". Try "Bloodsucking dick".
Yes, you could argue that both scenarios are optional and I'm not being forced to buy either one. But in this case, with EA, it seems like they are already thinking of "omitting" parts until they see if the game is a hit...which is when they'll start giving you the option to unlock them for a price.
God bless Capitalism.
Listen, I know how you feel. I never have, nor will I ever, pay for a microtransaction. I've been a hardcore gamer for over 20+ years, and I also think that microtractions are shit.
But I'm also a business man, and I love business. And from a business perpestive, Riccitiello is doing a good job. He's buying great software developing companies while still retaining the talent there and without destroying the culture of the company EA is buying (so far, at least). Granted, he says dumb things sometimes to the press without realizing how it would piss off gamers. But his job is to help EA make the most money possible, capture the larget percentage of market share possible, and set the company up for success in the future.
So you know what?...if gamers out there are stupid enough to pay for microtransactions like this, which they obviously are otherwise company's wouldn't charge for shit like this, then by all means it's well within his rights to do his job well and make as much money as possible.
If you don't like it then get mad at the idiotic gamers who buy the shit...not EA or Riccitiello.

When it comes to video games, more than any other form of entertainment people just seem to lose their minds. Kinda like those old women who confuse TV and real life and go round smacking actors with their handbags.
