EA will host a panel discussing homophobia in game culture photo

Say what you will about videogame culture, but no one can deny that it can be a difficult space for a gay gamer to be in -- especially with the word "faggot" tossed around so easily online. It seems as if EA aims to support a motion against this by hosting a panel being held by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) this Saturday.

Shacknews reports that reps from Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Linden Labs, GayGamer.net and the Entertainment Software Association will be attending the panel and topics covered will include how to provide safer spaces for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) people online, how to educate the users of online communities about the effects of homophobia and how to prevent virtual attacks against them.

The event is open to the public, so if you're interested you can head over to EA Headquarters in Redwood City, CA and take it all in from 11 AM to 1 PM. While writing this story, I noticed the most recent comment was "Wow, there are much more important things to be holding a panel about. What a bunch of faggots." Longggg way to go, EA. Cheers to you for doing it though -- it needs to be done.

I doubt this panel will do any real good unless they call out companies that go out of their way to discriminate against people's sexuality. At least someone is doing something. I'm sick and tired of hearing FAG on XBL

If gamers are so homophobic, why do they like to slap their "rifles" into the back of my head and drop their balls into my mouth after I'm lying on the floor unconscious?? Sounds pretty gay if you ask me....

My eyes just vomitted. I just got an eyeful of gay, give a warning next time.

About the actual panel, I don't see much discussion going on. I mean they're just going to say call gay folks faggots or don't call bi folks fence sitters or don't call straight folks breeders. Basically they're advocating about not trash talking each other. If you just steamrolled a beginner gamer on an online match, don't call him a n00b, that's just offensive.

This sounds really interesting to me. I have no idea how they're even going to begin to address this problem. I listened to a conversation the other day in Battlefield 1943 about whether 24 (the show) was gay or not. Seriously. What is wrong with people?

Maybe we need to see some more maturity in the way that homosexuality is handled in games (and sexuality in general, but we all know how people like to shit bricks about that). Honestly, the only real homosexuality in gaming that I can think of was in Fear Effect, and that was just about the most hollow use of it I can think of, using lesbians more as a way to sell the game to young horny kids than as a way to actually bring real homosexual relationships into a game. I'd be interested to hear this game is discussed during the panel, though that doesn't really seem to be included in the panel's purpose, and whether it would actually have any effect on the idiots is questionable at best.

Indeed, we've got a long, long way to go.

Well this could be interesting. On the one hand, I think use of the word "faggot" just as often has to do with casual use of an interchangeable epithet, having very little to do with the actual context of the word or true, deep-seated homophobia. Then again, the fact that so many people are so willing to embrace terms like "faggot" or "cock-sucker" and identify them as insulting suggests that they at least recognize it as something to be looked down upon socially, even if they don't hold a personal bias against homosexuality.

It's nice to think that people care enough to get together and talk about the issue, as well as it's role in gaming at large.

I have no problems with faggots playing video games...

Seriously though, I have no problems using words like "Ghey" and "Fag" online, but usually i just refer to my XBL opponents as "Douchrockets". It has nothing to do with the gay community and everything to do with slang terminology that the gaming community seems to embrace. I would love to see a study done to see how many people that spout "faggot" and "nigger" over their mics are actually bigots.

In a world full of insecurity and repressed emotions, it's only normalcy for such behavior to be passed on to children. Sure, spreading awareness of an issue like this is great, more power to them, but the problem isn't so much in wrongful behavior rather than parenting and, quite frankly, all of human history. But I stand by this. Even if it only slightly cuts down on the amount of bullshit I hear out of 12-year-old-and-younger children on Xbox LIVE. From a psychological standpoint, the swearing and "outbursts" of homophobic phrases stems from a fear of loss or humiliation. The word fag is only a placeholder. It could be anything. Humans feel the need to destroy, degrade, belittle, and otherwise humiliate the competition, whether to tend to the wounds to their own fragile ego/psyche, or having to cope with the thought of complete and utter loss. It's not so much that people are even homophobic when they say these things in game communities. Sure, they might be, but it's just one of many popular terms of choice used by society to refer to something that they feel is beneath them. But I digress. I've seen how far an intellectual conversation can get me on the innernetz. It's not pretty. Dtoiders, shall you redeem me?

This is good. Discussion is always helpful. Though nothing may come of it immediately after, this panel might spurn others to act, so only good can come from this.

As far as the stuff being said over Live, I think that if Microsoft ever got off their ass and actually held people accountable, then the hate will be lessened. My solution? No anonymity. Your name/face is searchable on Live. You can be contacted. That would shut some little kids up if they knew their parents could be contacted.

...Because, I care what xX<insertname>Xx's sexual preference is while I'm blasting them with a shotgun to the dome online. Y'know sometimes I just forget I'm playing a game while that thought consumes me.

A lot of people use the word "faggot" gays/lesbians included, get over it.

I openly welcome them to call me whatever retarded-ass derogatory term for being straight they can come up with.

I could agree on some filters for finding matches or whatever, or having clean rooms where language, etc. is monitored.

It's wrong to be compromising on the "shit-talking kids" fun though, I think most would agree it's totally non-personal, some people are just more passionate than others... if you can't stand the heat, get out of the fire.

@Monodi:

Why? Why do you care about people's sexuality? It's nothing you have anything to do with, unless it's a person you have a sexual relationship with. Have you ever met gay people? Perhaps. Chances are you haven't noticed. In most cases perfectly normal people.

You know, people's personality is not only determined by their sexuality. ;)

I really dont think the term "faggot" should be banned from XBL, just like i wouldn't like the word "fuck" banned either, the real problem i think is when people use said words to attack one another because of their sexual preference, religious beliefs, race or simply to be mean to other people, ive been called quite a number of derrogatory names by my closest friends, but since it doesnt have any truth or meaning besides a cheap laugh or two, i dont care if im being called a donkey-fucking siphilitic tranny with a shit-eating whore for a mom (actual casual insult betweeen my friends), and it offends me less than when someone calls me "dummy" or "stupid" to be mean, the problem is how people treat people, not which words they use.
FinnE's Avatar - Comment posted on 07/15/2009 12:17

While I don't think that this will necessarily change anything, I admire EA for trying. Someone needs to do something to address the apparent equivalence of stupidity and homosexuality - because kids on XBL simply don't realize that being gay and being stupid are mutually exclusive. To them, the terms are interchangeable. As Eminem once famously said, "when I call someone gay I don't actually mean they're homosexual, I just mean they're being a douche". That's the problem right there, no separation between the two negatives.

There's definitely a long way to go to address issues of hate and intolerance. But someone's got to start it, and it looks like that's going to be EA. Good for them.

I read GLAAD's letter to the gaming community, I saw the "Don't say 'Thats Gay'" PSA's, I've heard countless arguments by the same people. It all comes down to the same result:

I picture a Bruno-esque gay guy doing the "flimsy hand flop" thing at me while saying "Ssssstop it!"

If you want gamers to take you seriously, stop, well, being so effeminate. And I'm talking about both men and women and organizations such as GLAAD and FAAG or GAAY whatever they may be. I for one find gay(male) sex disgusting, but I believe two consenting adults should be able to do as they wish behind closed doors.

BEHIND CLOSED DOORS being the key. That goes for everyone, "breeders" and non-breeders alike. And another thing, about that term, "breeders"--nvm, I'm just going to stop now.

Really, I wish they would comment on the obvious lack of inclusiveness of LGBT characters in video games. What was the last one you can remeber in a video game released in 2009? Last year you could count them on one hand, with only one being a fairly positive, empathetic example, i.e. not one to fire pink, heart-shaped lasers from the crotch and/or sperm beams from their head. If one stereotyped black people like what was done in the early twentieth century it would not fly today, so why should we have more tolerance of it happening to gay people?

What do they mean "safe space?" Are we going to make special "gay" areas of games now? If we want people to accept homosexuality as normal, we have to stop treating it as something special or different apart from "regular" people. Pointing it out with vigor just further draws it away from the mainstream.

It's like the (not so old) saying - San Francisco's Gay Pride Parade has pushed gay acceptance further back than any hate group could ever hope to.

I think you said it better than I ever could. Treating Gayism™ differently is just special treatment, and doesn't the gay community pride itself on striving for equality?

On a different note, if my friends call me a "faggot" do I get so upset? No. If they call me "Fat" do I cry? No. I'm Hispanic, and if they call me "spic" do I cry? NO. I simply return the favor in whatever manner possible and we have a good laugh at each other.

And these friends are some of the most nicest people I have ever met. You might think "omg they're just name-calling children!" but if I ever needed to bury a hook--I mean, if I ever had my back up against the wall, these guys would come to my aid in a second. If any of them were "heterosexually-challenged" that wouldn't matter to me, I would do the same for them. GLAAD and others need to realize that this name-calling has existed between comrades since the dawn of time.

Rammstein, I am all for a small amount of modesty being restored to America in general, but just the fact that someone gay like me plays videogames says a lot about homosexual stereotypes, doesn't it? Only the effeminate gay men get on television, get the exposure because the world loves extremes. Keep in mind that ordinary gay people are out there too, and in far greater numbers than you might think. Still, it would be nice if a little restraint was shown in gay pride parades by replace the occasional thong with work uniforms, to intill a sense of respect and realization that LGBT work in the community for you every day.

I think that "making safe environments" for any specific group is all a bunch of b.s. I think that gay people have to realize that the words tossed out are simply not personal (in much the same way that I thought the word "bitch" was being addressed to me because I was female, I think that gay people have to realize that the word "faggot" is not necessarily directed at them because they are gay. Guys call each other "bitch" or "faggot" and that's just the way they are - it's nothing personal. They likely don't even know a female or a gay person is even in the game).

The "problems" are not with gaming specifically... it's with our current culture where these words are used on TV shows, in music, etc. on a regular basis.

I know gay gamers (one particularly memorable person was in the Warhawk tourney) and they can still have a gay nick and be treated with respect... if they realize that the people picking on them because they are out there and obviously gay are the same people that pick on female gamers or n00bs. Having a sense of humour and some class goes much further in dealing with these idiots than getting angry about it or demanding "safe gaming environments".

I do think that they can advocate for the ability to use nicks that identify them as gay, I do think that they can advocate for better portrayals of gay characters in video games... but I don't think that they can change the way our current society and internet anonymity works.

Its a positive move. I'm straight, but when I game, I just treat everyone in the same good manor, and if I d insult someone in jest, I'll use more creative language than calling someone 'gay' etc.

As far as games characters go, its difficult because chracters never go that far into their character, for us to know their preferences (ad some might say it shouldn't matter). While Fear Effect was tripping start and Bully another step, its an angle many devs may fear, because they are scared of losing sales, and possibly their jobs. In a similar way to other geeky cultures, games are largely male straight dominated turf, and a place where gamers go to escape such gender politics. I can understand that.

And do you know the most ironic bit, is that japan has more homo/bi/les games than any other nation, yet they go vastly ignored by the industry (be they hentai dating sims or whatever).

Sure, it might not change anything, but its worth a try, EA.
