Say what you will about videogame culture, but no one can deny that it can be a difficult space for a gay gamer to be in -- especially with the word "faggot" tossed around so easily online. It seems as if EA aims to support a motion against this by hosting a panel being held by the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) this Saturday.
Shacknews reports that reps from Microsoft, Electronic Arts, Linden Labs, GayGamer.net and the Entertainment Software Association will be attending the panel and topics covered will include how to provide safer spaces for LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered) people online, how to educate the users of online communities about the effects of homophobia and how to prevent virtual attacks against them.
The event is open to the public, so if you're interested you can head over to EA Headquarters in Redwood City, CA and take it all in from 11 AM to 1 PM. While writing this story, I noticed the most recent comment was "Wow, there are much more important things to be holding a panel about. What a bunch of faggots." Longggg way to go, EA. Cheers to you for doing it though -- it needs to be done.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?????????????????
and the video game industry comes crashing down...
...according to Microsoft's gamertag policy.

About the actual panel, I don't see much discussion going on. I mean they're just going to say call gay folks faggots or don't call bi folks fence sitters or don't call straight folks breeders. Basically they're advocating about not trash talking each other. If you just steamrolled a beginner gamer on an online match, don't call him a n00b, that's just offensive.
That's awesome though - good on EA!
Maybe we need to see some more maturity in the way that homosexuality is handled in games (and sexuality in general, but we all know how people like to shit bricks about that). Honestly, the only real homosexuality in gaming that I can think of was in Fear Effect, and that was just about the most hollow use of it I can think of, using lesbians more as a way to sell the game to young horny kids than as a way to actually bring real homosexual relationships into a game. I'd be interested to hear this game is discussed during the panel, though that doesn't really seem to be included in the panel's purpose, and whether it would actually have any effect on the idiots is questionable at best.
Indeed, we've got a long, long way to go.
It's nice to think that people care enough to get together and talk about the issue, as well as it's role in gaming at large.
You host panels with GLAAD.
Seriously though, I have no problems using words like "Ghey" and "Fag" online, but usually i just refer to my XBL opponents as "Douchrockets". It has nothing to do with the gay community and everything to do with slang terminology that the gaming community seems to embrace. I would love to see a study done to see how many people that spout "faggot" and "nigger" over their mics are actually bigots.
;)
As far as the stuff being said over Live, I think that if Microsoft ever got off their ass and actually held people accountable, then the hate will be lessened. My solution? No anonymity. Your name/face is searchable on Live. You can be contacted. That would shut some little kids up if they knew their parents could be contacted.
Man, society should be proud of us for having something in common.
A lot of people use the word "faggot" gays/lesbians included, get over it.
I openly welcome them to call me whatever retarded-ass derogatory term for being straight they can come up with.
I could agree on some filters for finding matches or whatever, or having clean rooms where language, etc. is monitored.
It's wrong to be compromising on the "shit-talking kids" fun though, I think most would agree it's totally non-personal, some people are just more passionate than others... if you can't stand the heat, get out of the fire.
andycadaver: How's that first year psychology course working out for you?
Fuck that bullshit. Just waving the white flag and letting the bullies and bigots takeover your culture. Pathetic.
Why? Why do you care about people's sexuality? It's nothing you have anything to do with, unless it's a person you have a sexual relationship with. Have you ever met gay people? Perhaps. Chances are you haven't noticed. In most cases perfectly normal people.
You know, people's personality is not only determined by their sexuality. ;)
Also, Chronic Logic, you're being ironic right?..... right?
There's definitely a long way to go to address issues of hate and intolerance. But someone's got to start it, and it looks like that's going to be EA. Good for them.
And yeah, funny to see Microsoft attending this since they obviously do very little to discourage foul mouthed little shits from screaming constant abuse down their microphone. It'd be nice to see something happen but I very much doubt this will have any impact.
I picture a Bruno-esque gay guy doing the "flimsy hand flop" thing at me while saying "Ssssstop it!"
If you want gamers to take you seriously, stop, well, being so effeminate. And I'm talking about both men and women and organizations such as GLAAD and FAAG or GAAY whatever they may be. I for one find gay(male) sex disgusting, but I believe two consenting adults should be able to do as they wish behind closed doors.
BEHIND CLOSED DOORS being the key. That goes for everyone, "breeders" and non-breeders alike. And another thing, about that term, "breeders"--nvm, I'm just going to stop now.
It's like the (not so old) saying - San Francisco's Gay Pride Parade has pushed gay acceptance further back than any hate group could ever hope to.
I think you said it better than I ever could. Treating Gayism™ differently is just special treatment, and doesn't the gay community pride itself on striving for equality?
On a different note, if my friends call me a "faggot" do I get so upset? No. If they call me "Fat" do I cry? No. I'm Hispanic, and if they call me "spic" do I cry? NO. I simply return the favor in whatever manner possible and we have a good laugh at each other.
And these friends are some of the most nicest people I have ever met. You might think "omg they're just name-calling children!" but if I ever needed to bury a hook--I mean, if I ever had my back up against the wall, these guys would come to my aid in a second. If any of them were "heterosexually-challenged" that wouldn't matter to me, I would do the same for them. GLAAD and others need to realize that this name-calling has existed between comrades since the dawn of time.
The "problems" are not with gaming specifically... it's with our current culture where these words are used on TV shows, in music, etc. on a regular basis.
I know gay gamers (one particularly memorable person was in the Warhawk tourney) and they can still have a gay nick and be treated with respect... if they realize that the people picking on them because they are out there and obviously gay are the same people that pick on female gamers or n00bs. Having a sense of humour and some class goes much further in dealing with these idiots than getting angry about it or demanding "safe gaming environments".
I do think that they can advocate for the ability to use nicks that identify them as gay, I do think that they can advocate for better portrayals of gay characters in video games... but I don't think that they can change the way our current society and internet anonymity works.
As far as games characters go, its difficult because chracters never go that far into their character, for us to know their preferences (ad some might say it shouldn't matter). While Fear Effect was tripping start and Bully another step, its an angle many devs may fear, because they are scared of losing sales, and possibly their jobs. In a similar way to other geeky cultures, games are largely male straight dominated turf, and a place where gamers go to escape such gender politics. I can understand that.
And do you know the most ironic bit, is that japan has more homo/bi/les games than any other nation, yet they go vastly ignored by the industry (be they hentai dating sims or whatever).
Sure, it might not change anything, but its worth a try, EA.
