EA wants to water down music biz just like video game biz, hooray! photo

Not content with ruling the gaming world with an iron fist, Electronic Arts has just announced they are starting a music label. Skynet called, they want their world domination plans back.

Electronic Arts has started a new full-fledged music label in a partnership with the label which signed Sarah MacLachlan and Barenaked Ladies.

The label is the love child of EA and Nettwerk One Music, and has been dubbed Artwerk. Los Angeles-based Artwerk will sign and develop new and established artists worldwide for publishing, recording and distribution deals.

The new label has signed its inaugural act, Junkie XL, who has songs in games including Madden NFL and Need for Speed Carbon.

I can only wonder if EA will charge us extra for album art. A boy can dream.

They're going to release CDs with 12 songs, but you can only listen to 8 of them, and then you have to pay to download a key to unlock each of the other 4 songs individually.

Awesome. Now celebrities will know what it's like to work 72 hour days to release yearly followup albums that have the same sound and feel as the year before, but have new song titles.

Why haven't they signed Nickelback or Limp Bizkit yet?

Great, now we're gonna see a new album every year with only minor changes to the song list.

each successive album only has one new track, but all the same songs have been recorded at slightly higher quality

didn't Barenaked Ladies recently release an album for free over the net? Doesn't seem like the kind of band to sign with a place like EA

Nettwerk was the label for Skinny Puppy as well. Maybe the Killing Game will make it into the next version of Madden. I just hope that this doesn't mean that Nettwerk will be leaving EMusic. They are pretty big supporters of DRM free music services.

this is retarded...why would they do this...they stop making money when people finally found out there isnt a big difference in the yearly sports games or what?

Probably because like any company, they want more money.

Great, because when I hear the generic soundtracks on generic EA sports games, right before I turn the music volume down to zero, I can't help but think "I wish there were some way that I could buy this music"

meh. 99% of major label music sucks ass anyway. I'm sure EA will do a great job of keeping the status quo.

Actually I have to deal with Nettwerk sometimes (Music Video Editor)
Their artists aren't as bad as they could be...which really isn't saying much...

woah, i thought the music industry was already watered down to the same nickleback-esque band every month and teeny bopper cam-whore already? whatever... every cd they release will sound the same.
