EA to the Internets: 'What's a Wikipedia?' photo

While it's debatable that Electronic Arts is, in fact, De Debilz, there's no denying that the locust-esque company swallower is, like most corporations, a big fat pile of PR and sleaze. The news should have come as no shocker then, when it was discovered that EA was editing Wikipedia like a dirty cheat, removing traces of EA founder Trip Hawkins and whitewashing over some of the more scandalous and vile moments of the company's history.

I'm surprised though that EA thought it would get away with this, considering the amount of anal, obsessive Wikipedia editors out there who jump on everything with sweaty trotters, screaming things like "OMG NON-NOTEWORTHY DELETE DIS SPAM" or "CITATION NEEDED OR WE WILL ALL DIE!"

Since the jig is up, EA has today responded to Wikigate with what could only be described as the perfect corporate reply: "EA sometimes updates websites with info about the company, games and employees. For example, EA has sent a correction to Yahoo Finance when they had misspelled the name of an EA executive. Many companies routinely post updates on websites like Wikipedia to ensure accuracy of their own corporate information."

You don't even need further commentary from me on that one.

EA should go get off my interwebs and go make a Madden game or some other game for consumer whores.

LOL-if you go look, the Wikipedia entry includes a mention of the August 15, EA-editing of the Wiki entry. Love it- talk about shooting yourself in the foot. Let's keep an eye on that one and see how long it is around. Madden '08 is crap-tastic and so is EA....lovin' this.

So i guess they are implying that all they were doing was correcting the inaccuracies?

Stephen Colbert's Wikiality became reality, and companies all over the world have been changing history.

... I'm not shocked or surprised personally. But it is definitely giggle worthy when these bastards get caught with their pants down.

Hehe

It's oddly fitting that they would be wiping out references to Trip Hawkins, as EA has been completely spitting in the face if his business design for years. EA USED to be about respecting the developer, and the imprints that they used to have were some of my favorites (Bullfrog, Origin, etc.). Now, they're just the same generic crap as everyone else.

Thank you Jim and TheGoldenDonut! I absolutely love this juicy corporate pr stuff. It truly seems like it's the nature of the beast (I mean, how could they not take the opportunity to doctor something you're allowed to), but that doesn't mean it isn't fascinating to watch when they do it in such a clumsy manner.

Remember when Wiki was first around, and only the '1337' used it, then the general internet public used it, then the public used it, and now corporations are using it. Who woulda thunk it? That's why I only read stuff like dramadapedia or whatever. That shit's hilarious.

Wikigate[p]

alright now. no offense or anything, because i'm telling all my web-news outlets this: stop ending every "scandal" with -gate! it's not clever, it's a bastardization of a hotel name, the "scandals" are not nearly Nixon quality, and everyone's doing it which makes it no longer cool.

Editing of Wikipedia

On August 15, 2007 it was revealed that IP addresses registered to EA had made changes favoring EA.[12][13] The changes made included downplaying the importance of the founder of EA, Trip Hawkins, as well as playing up the importance of the new (at the time) CEO, Larry Probst.[12] Other changes included attempts to remove information regarding the famous EA Spouse scandal.[12]
EA's response was that "Many companies routinely post updates on websites like Wikipedia to ensure accuracy of their own corporate information."[14] They did not, however, address the specifics of the changes.

Haha, owned.

Silly EA, thinking the Internets wouldn't figure this out in no time.

So, how about that Destructoid Wikipedia article?
