It wasn't long ago that if you wanted an early copy of a popular videogame, all you had to do was travel to the nearest mom-and-pop game store a few days before street date. At least for Mass Effect 3, the ordeal has turned into a race against the rest of the Internet.
Using weather balloons, Electronic Arts is sending copies of ME3 to space, complete with GPS devices attached. The games -- which are being released from New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Berlin, London, and Paris -- will apparently be trackable from the official website, though I'm not seeing it yet.
This is a fun idea in theory, but I feel like someone is going to get hurt. We're a vile bunch, sometimes.

Jordan Devore is Destructoid's PC gaming manager and founding ginger editor. He is said to be easy to love but difficult to know. When Samit inquired about his curious bio photo Jordan simply replied:
"bitches love sandcastles" ... yet, there is no sandcastle in that photo. We may never truly understand his ways.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!

Then a hundred or two years later the Reapers attack and we all wonder why.
fucking agree :P
Seriously EA...so what was your reason for making online passes and Origin again? Please indulge me with your bullshit again.
My thoughts exactly. It's difficult enough to believe that adding gamepad support would be that difficult in the first place, but if they can be bothered to dish out a hefty sum of money to send a handful of copies of ME3 into the stratosphere, you would think that a few minor tweaks to the control input would be a piece of cake. Space cake. With a space cherry on top. SPACE!
Besides, of the relatively small number of people who might be interested in this, and of them even fewer who would take the time to follow the project's progress, how many are even going to be aware of it?
As for the reason why rockets need so much energy to propel into the stratosphere... it could be that carrying millions of pounds of weight (A space shuttle is 4.4 million pounds) just requires that much energy than sending a dinky little balloon with basically almost no weigh to lift.

Lies! Filthy lies! All of them!
Fuck you EA I'm not falling for it again. DA2 was the last straw.
