EA to send copies of Mass Effect 3 into space photo

It wasn't long ago that if you wanted an early copy of a popular videogame, all you had to do was travel to the nearest mom-and-pop game store a few days before street date. At least for Mass Effect 3, the ordeal has turned into a race against the rest of the Internet.

Using weather balloons, Electronic Arts is sending copies of ME3 to space, complete with GPS devices attached. The games -- which are being released from New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Berlin, London, and Paris -- will apparently be trackable from the official website, though I'm not seeing it yet.

This is a fun idea in theory, but I feel like someone is going to get hurt. We're a vile bunch, sometimes.

I assume the game will be caught up by space debri and because of that will not float into the depths of space.

/sad realization

Is it REALLY space if it's still in the atmosphere? (weather balloons can only float in the atmosphere right?)

Glad to see EA is still spending money where it matters.

Watch them land in the hands of someone who puts them on The Pirate Bay. I would laugh so hard.

Weather balloons can't go up in space, can they? Rockets have a hard enough time breaking away from Earth's atmosphere.

Imagine if an alien race found Mass Effect 3 and decided to destroy us for it for some reason. That would be an interesting couple of weeks.

... wouldn't the games break upon their crash landing?

Oh yes, allow the aliens to view us humans' shallow, sexual views towards extraterrestrial relationships. That's sure gonna make them happy!

Then a hundred or two years later the Reapers attack and we all wonder why.

I don't see the purpose. Just because Mass Effect is a space opera?

So they can spend a few grand attaching copy's of mass effect 3 to weather balloons that -will- pop and fall back to the earth but they couldn't be bothered to add controller support to the pc version?

Good place for it. Maybe now they'll go back to their roots and make a real sequel to the first game instead of the Gears of War clone they're trying to turn it into.

Hey, you ever wonder where your money goes to when you spend $60 on a EA product? Look no further!!

Seriously EA...so what was your reason for making online passes and Origin again? Please indulge me with your bullshit again.

I'm more hung up on how they have FULL RETAIL COPIES to muck about with, but we still have to wait close to three weeks to buy them ourselves.

My thoughts exactly. It's difficult enough to believe that adding gamepad support would be that difficult in the first place, but if they can be bothered to dish out a hefty sum of money to send a handful of copies of ME3 into the stratosphere, you would think that a few minor tweaks to the control input would be a piece of cake. Space cake. With a space cherry on top. SPACE!

Besides, of the relatively small number of people who might be interested in this, and of them even fewer who would take the time to follow the project's progress, how many are even going to be aware of it?

Don't anybody follow the news? They saw a bunch of kids having the ability to do this with small weather balloons and have it safely touch down after a set time. It's apparently gotten to the point where anybody with a decent budget can do this.

As for the reason why rockets need so much energy to propel into the stratosphere... it could be that carrying millions of pounds of weight (A space shuttle is 4.4 million pounds) just requires that much energy than sending a dinky little balloon with basically almost no weigh to lift.

If they the took all the money they spent on marketing and actually put it into the game then maybe it wouldn't look like a casual dudebro shooter with day 1 on disc DLC and a shitty multiplayer mode that you have to play if you want a good ending.

Fuck you EA I'm not falling for it again. DA2 was the last straw.

these games won't be able to travel through the atmosphere and into space. Which is the 1 thing I wanted mass effect 3 to do to make it more immersive so it's quite fitting.
