EA: Sims 3 best-selling PC game worldwide in 2009 photo

Believe it or note, three iterations and 643 expansion packs in, Electronic Art's The Sims franchise is still holding on strong. According to EA, The Sims 3 was the best selling PC game worldwide in 2009.

In 2000, the original The Sims was the best selling PC game worldwide. Ditto for 2001, 2002, and 2003. Then, in 2004, that title went to The Sims 2. So basically what I'm trying to say here is that The Sims is still popular. True story: I recently purchase a PC capable of gaming, and the first game I purchase was The Sims 3. Am I "part of the problem"?

EA hopes to conquer consoles with The Sims goodness in 2010, as it was recently revealed that the franchise would be coming to other platforms. Halo: Reach, watch your back.

I knew there was a reason I was slowly moving away from PC gaming...may need to run now.

Cool, nice to see a series that improves with each iteration sell well. 'Hardcore' gamers might scoff at the sims, but really, who gives a shit? It seems that the series is doing just fine without their support. I'll be busy enjoying myself with the game, whilst they rub their pathetic e-peens over criticizing the game.

I do love me some sims, and don't feel like I am part of any sort of problem. I invest in a game that gives me near endless hours of playtime, customization and is very good value for money.

I don't see the huge problem the "hardcore" have with the Sims. I invested more time into the first game (and the expansions) than almost any other game I can think of. Just because something is enjoyed by a lot of "casuals" doesn't mean that it's actually bad.

I had a co-worker that bought this game and played it for a while. Stop after a month and when I asked why he just said that he got bored of it and uninstalled it. He's not 'casual' in the least but it still surprised me that someone like him would play it. So, in short this news doesn't surprise me in the least. And also the fact that a lot of people that buy this game know what half of the 'requirements' mean in the computer and cannot run it. I've heard that a lot from several people at work, heh.

I've never had a chance to play this, because it's never been on a console I've owned and cared about at the same time. My PC is beyond hope for gaming.

So if it comes to 360 or PS3 I might give it a play.

You were moving away from pc gaming because sims 3 sells a lot of copies? Huh? I don't get it.

I've never really understood the appeal of The Sims. It just isn't fun for me.

It's not available for sale on Steam... damn. The Sims is a nice casual game. I'm looking forward to get a copy of The Sims 3... in a sale. I would never pay full retail price in this game...

I consider myself a pretty " lol so hardcore" gamer, and I like the sims.

I wonder how much of 2009's Sims success can be attributed to mobile sales. I had no idea there was a mobile version, until I bought a Nokia E72 at Christmas and the damn game came preinstalled from Nokia. (Bought unlocked via Newegg.)

I dig SimCity, but The Sims is like the reality television of gaming to me. But more power to you if you enjoy it.

I'd definitely count myself as hardcore overall and I've always really enjoyed The Sims. Like Pudge Controls the Weather, I spent a ludicrous amount of time playing TS1 and expansions back in the day.

If anything has moved me away from PC gaming it's not the popularity of the Sims, but the approach that is taken with the games such as extreme DRM, shitting console-PC ports and terribad control schemes. I actually think the Sims on consoles are awful games. When I think of the dreaded casual types I think of the ones who play those monstrosities, not the PC counterparts which share little more than a title.

I really like playing the sims games, but I also get bored of them pretty quickly. Then have to leave the game alone for a month or so..then come back to it.

I have grown out of playing The Sims back in the day. Partly because I can't have a spanking new PC every year to play this (and other PC games). But yeah, the interest still resides in me.

I'm a lot like Starrynight in that I my interest is like a sine wave. Back in the day I could play very intensely for months. Now I play pretty hardcore for maybe a week or two and then drop off for a good while before picking it up again. However, each time I pick it up again it's very fresh and exciting for no apparent reason. It doesn't have the same feel as picking up an old RPG or FPS and going through the story again. It's the same old shit, but something new at the same time.

I'd say it's a lot like a Civilization game where you just keep wanting to play one more turn until you've played till 3 in the morning. I keep telling myself I'll stop when I hit a certain milestone.

I understand the game isn't for everyone, but I'd say it basically has the same appeal that RPGs have in that you're building up your "character" from scratch to be a powerhouse except in the Sims you're building up people from having nothing to slowly having tons of money, awesome skills, great jobs and a huge mansion all of your own design.

Let's just call the Sims what it is - something we can give our girlfriends so they won't get so cranky about our constant gaming ;)

I think it's funny that hardcore guy gamers think this is a women's game. I know more guys who play it than women. WoW on the other hand...

I bought it. I don't know why. Seriously, how do people find this fun? I remember loving the first one, but in playing the third, I just couldn't do it... there was no entertainment there whatsoever...
