The headline of this story basically says it all, but since I admittedly know little about the world of mixed martial arts, I turned to another source -- friend and Destructoid reader, Kevvo.
"What the f*ck is Strikeforce?" I asked him, via text message.
"Haha, UFC's competition," he replied. "Why?"
EA Sports, I explained, had signed with Strikeforce to appear in its upcoming mixed martial arts title, EA Sports MMA. Knowing he was a fan of sports like UFC, I asked him if he thought this was a big deal.
"Put it this way," he tells me. "If the Nintendo DS is the UFC, then the PSPgo is Strikeforce," he explains. I asked him to clarify -- does this mean that Strikeforce has better graphics and crappier battery life, but you can control UFC president Dana White with a stylus? He doesn't answer.
"They really only have one or two fighters worth watching," he continues.
"Do those guys happen to be Brett Rogers and Jake Shields? Because those two are signed on for EA Sports MMA," I tell him.
Yes, those are the guys, he says. And I think I've cleared this up rather nicely. EA Sports MMA is scheduled for a 2010 release on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.
by the way, the sport is Mixed Martial Arts, not UFC.
thats like calling boxing Don King, UFC is just a promotion.
I dont want to start a flame war, I like both equally, its just that the DS(UFC) is the most easily accessible, and you cant deny theres quality.
Was hard to text this to nickwhile driving through traffic....
Strikeforce also works hand in hand with DREAM in Japan, and they have some good fighters too. This is just the start for EA MMA, because signing a deal with Strikeforce will also allow them to use the WOMEN fighters on the roster too. That is going to be a bullet point for this title by early next year I am willing to bet.
But do not take my word for it, WATCH FOR YOURSELF tonight because they are having a fight card on CBS primetime. It should be a good show, and Nick can watch it under the guise of "research" for this web site haha.
Yeah, because Fedor, Mousasi, "Mayhem" Miller, Werdum and Overeem are nobodys...
@Polymath - Probably because Fedor is the only one you mentioned that anyone knows.
Also note that EA Sports MMA will also have Randy Couture as they signed him before he returned to the UFC.
With the DREAM alliance there are a lot of good matchups Strikeforce can make. That said, the UFC at this point still has the best fighters.
and lol at wade. strikeforce is NO WHERE near as profitible as ufc, doesn't get the buy rates or ratings, and is nowhere near as well known. It's not any sort of real competition for ufc, never mind ''stiff'' competition.
Strikeforce is mostly doing things the right way- building slowly around talented, marketable young fighters and with the advantage of having the only serious women's division in North America. Co-promoting with M-1 Global to sign Fedor may have been a bad choice, but we'll see. That rat Finkelstein who represents Fedor is not a good man to be in business with, period.
Frank Mir couldn't beat a cold let alone Fedor. Stay off the drugs my friend and respect an MMA Monster when you see one!
Losing to Cain Velasquez, who is far from the real deal at HW, so convincingly at 104 shows that being good means nothing if it's in the UFC.
Fedor isn't in the UFC because he doesn't want to lose. I have little doubts Carwin or Lesnar would knock him out.
It's amazing that people like you think that a man who willingly fought Nogueira multiple times, including when he was the #1 heavyweight in the world, is now going out of his way to duck Shane fucking Carwin. Give me a break.
I think people like yourself want to believe there is no talent outside of the UFC simply because you are ignorant of the sport outside of that particular organization. If you say there are no good fighters outside of the UFC, then you're not missing anything, right? And then you're also not a fan with barely any knowledge of the sport, too.
Unfortunately, you're wrong, and there is plenty of talent outside of the UFC. Even Dana White knows that. If Fedor sucked, why did he offer him a contract that was supposedly better than what they were paying anyone else in the division? Certainly it wasn't because Fedor is a widely popular fighter, because he's not.
As far as I'm concerned, I hope this has a better engine in terms of what I can do in the game than UFC 2009, and that the create-a-fighter will let me recreate any UFC fighters I want to fantasy-fight. Can you say diving punch KO?
