EA should try to buy Take-Two again photo

The whole EA/Take-Two almost became a joke (and a waste of ink) it got so drawn out. EA would try to buy Take-Two, Take-Two would reject them, EA would come back, Take-Two would reject them again. It finally all settled with EA giving up hope and Take-Two not being bought. It got a little tiring, really. Why are we bringing it up again? Because someone else has, so don't blame us. 3D Realms' Scott Miller says EA needs to try again.

"I’m actually impressed with some of EA’s recent tries at new IP, such as Dead Space, Army of Two, and Mirror’s Edge," he told Gamesauce. "I hope that the lukewarm sales of these games do not cause them to stop trying to take big swings with new properties. EA really does need to broaden the number of game brands it can rely on—big hitters like a Call of Duty, Gears of War, GTA, and so on. What’s the real shame for them is that they were vigorously pushing for new brands during their recent heyday of soaring stock and untold riches. Like so many other market leaders, they rested on their laurels while Activision—doing its best Avis impersonation (“We’re #2, but we try harder”)—out-EA’ed EA."

He continued, "EA’s only chance, in my opinion, is to acquire Take-Two and add GTA, Max Payne, Duke Nukem, Bioshock, and Civilization to it’s lineup. In fact, they tried acquiring Take-Two already last year. They need to try again."

I think we're all upset by EA's lack of sales for their new IPs since most of them were trying to do some new things and were also good games, but the sad truth is you need money to take risks like that. I'm not sure if EA can do it though, especially with Rockstar being part of the deal. We all know how hard it is to breach the gates of Mordor.

EA Needs to Try Buying Take-Two Again, says Scott Miller [IndustryGamers]

The shape EA is in now, it could end up happening the other way around. Talk about cruel irony!

I dunno of they're in a position to do so. Are they?

Anyway Mass Effect should be a huge new asset to them. Here's to hoping they don't whore it out in desperation.

This might be the only possibility to finally see a release of DNF.

EA will buy out TakeTwo with stock for stock. The only problem last time was Take Two shareholders wanted more.

To be fair EA weren't giving Take Two what they deserved but if they made an offer that is more on target then theres no reason EA wouldn't already own Take Two.

EA are not making record profits right now but then practically all developers are losing money or making very little profit. EA's franchises are valued a small fortune so debtors will be happy to buy Bonds with EA if they were in any trouble.

All in all if EA stopped being so greedy they would own Take Two but the investors were right to shove them off with such a small premium especially considering the stock of the company was about to rise too at that time period.

If EA want Take Two theyll have it.

They can have Duke Nukem.

That should be all the help they need.

If EA bought Take-Two, wouldn't they just close it down, like, 6 months later?

Perhaps they should consider a merger instead? Or would that not be any different than a buyout?

EA has shown some nice gamer lover lately. I loved Mirror's Edge [despite what other say about it] and Dead Space was well received [not my kind of game]. BF BC2 should do very well and if the Medal of Honor reboot manages to be a more grounded, balanced and fun game then they may be able to steal some of the marketshare from CoD.

Plus, of course, they have Bioware which means Mass Effect, Dragon Age, and any other IP they might put out. Oh, and there's Dante's Inferno, too.

I think EA should be more focused on being attractive to Microsoft. A Microsoft purchase of EA would be good for both companies.

Hopefully TOR will be so successful that EA can spend tons of money on new IPs again.

If BFBC2 get's the sales it deserves EA will be laughing.

I'd say it's one of the best games due to come out anytime soon.

@Sexualchocolate no, BFBC2 sucks. and it's definitely not one of the best games to come out soon. then again, your default is a character from MAG, so that just goes to show you that you have horrible taste in games.

@ Sexualchocolate,

I have to agree with MrSwishaTwista about the BFBC2 game.. I've been playing the Beta and it's real lackluster, to say the least. I'm getting my money back ASAP.

I don't know what his problem is telling you that you have horrible tastes in games.. that's obviously way more elitist then anyone needs to be. But, whatever.

What is this talk of Bad Company being anything less than an awesome game?

I think the vast majority of gamers would disagree with you, based on the reaction I've heard from the demo. The first game's multiplayer was excellent, and the sequel ups the ante. It may not sell in COD numbers but it damn well deserves to from what I can see.

The demo for BFBC2 is actually really good, but I think it appeals to a different type of player. MW2 is more of a constant die and repop and re-die in seconds kind of game, or a camp out in a building and wait for someone to run by.

BFBC2 the whole objective and battlefield moves, and kills mean nothing at all. You can get 200 kills and still lose the match easily.

While I think shooting in MW2 feels better, BFBC2 is a much more polished game, shooting from a window and hearing the echo of the shot is just great.

EA buying Take Two means that Alpha Centauri and System Shock can return to their original developers. I like this idea.

Activision already bought Blizzard... or they merged, I can't remember.

@Ghost125
EA also bought BioWare. See: no drop in quality, Mass Effect 2 being better in almost every way than Mass Effect 1.

Why all the mag and BF:BC 2 hate? Must be cod fanboys. Mw2 is a disaster. MAG is very fun to play. As for BF. If it's anything like the first it will be great:)

Anyone find it ironic that Scott Miller, the guy that was in charge of getting Duke Nukem Forever out the door, is giving business advice? Besides, EA has barely enough money it seems to keep their own studios going, let alone the 19+ studios that Take-Two has.

Yes, do it. That way Take Two can lose their license for MLB games and EA can bring MVP Baseball back. Because all the 2K games suck.

Well if The Old Republic turns out to a fantastic experience....EA might well have the income stream to start making risky new IPs again.

I mean Star Wars fans will usually fork out for most things related to the brand,

*hides his collection of Clone Trooper Action Figures* <.<

and if EA went with a cheap subscription/micro-transaction system..im sure their subscriber base would be massive.

lol yeah, i renember when EA tryed the first attempt to buy R* ( i think, before take-two buyed it) in the gtaforums, as a joke, the adminds change the main R* tittle in the left bottom of the page for the well knowed EA logo, then the whole forum go crazy with fans asking if that would affect the dev of GTA IV ( for these times, the game wasn't even out yet) when they were imformed that it was a joke and then take-two already buyed R* games, the whole forum started to be in peace again, so EA got screw there, GTA

ups sorry i press enter for mistake, continuing, GTA is basically the most careful and loved R* franchise, they won't let any company to ruin it im sure, no matter what, so im more quiet knewing that

@RIMoonlight

might be, im not saying it will be, is just than seeing how other franchises got ruined by the mighty EA, then im just a little afraid than such a thing can happend, but as i say before, i don't thing R* is gonna let them to do such a thing

Don't see where people are getting this "EA will destroy all of our beloved franchises" mentality from. Just look at Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2. Two Bioware games that did not lose any amount of quality (okay, arguable for DA) despite being owned by EA. Not saying that big companies don't ruin franchises sometimes, but EA has had a decent track record for the past few years.

Anyway, I think EA shouldn't pursue it right now. I wouldn't mind if they tried later down the road, but as of now, they really need to focus on advertizing and improving their own IPs. Dead Space and Mirrors Edge were undeniably great games, they just didn't have the recognition they deserved. I'm sure a company like EA has the finances to push their IPs if they really wanted to.

It's ironic, for all those gamers who hated on EA, bitching about constant sequels and no IP at the time, EA were making huge profits. Now they have your average whiney gamer on their side (I never hated EA BTW) they are struggling to make financial dents.

@Gee-Man and @AdamantiumHip
EA has a LONG history of buying successful small game companies, taking hold of the valuable franchise and RUNNING them into the ground. Then firing the developers of those companies, that made those franchise great in the first place. And if you think that this is NOT going to happen to BIoWare.... JUST YOU WAIT.

So @Gee-Man, dig a little deeper at your gaming history. And @AdamantiumHip, stop kissing so much ass. (Maybe that's not your intention, but that's how you come off.)
AdamantiumHip's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/01/2010 15:44

I imagine EA dismantled those companies because they weren't making money, at the end of the day. Isn't that what buisnesses kinda do? aren't they trying to make a profit? I've never been deluded about that.

It would be the greatest tragedy in the world if it happened to bioware, but as long as they remain profitable (and with mass effect and dragon age doing well, it should be for a while) I see no problem.

You seem to suggest they keep losing money for what? Because you like the developer they brought? I loved Pandemic, but if they kept messing up projects (dark knight for example) and were really badly managed like I hear, then it's a shame but not a surprise. They did mercs 2, one of my most fun games ever, but I accept the reality of it, as much as it sucks.
