Seriously, though, this sucks. Hard. I'm really glad I gave up on Origin after the fucked up install process I went through.
Because a company snooping around your entire computer, not just the files and programs it placed upon your computer, is a complete invasion of privacy. Worse, you have no other options and so they hold their Origin exclusive software hostage on PC.
Sure, Valve does something similar. But they also give you the option to turn it off and the agreement, IIRC, only applies to those files that Steam has installed on the computer.
I just want to play a video game with my friends without installing all this shitware EA makes us use.
I am seriously considering not buying Battlefield 3 now.
They really don't want my money do they?

Now you're telling me Origin uses Spyware? WTF!??! NO WAY EA! YOU ALMOST HAD ME!
Origin doesn't let you opt out of this, it's tied to your account so they can market to you, and then they sell this information to 3rd parties.
There is a big difference.
It makes sense that a publisher would want to know this information, and it's good for developers to know what kind of hardware people have. But don't sell it, and don't force me to be a part of it.
fixed that for you.
Lets see if we can get enough outrage to get them to take it out because I need 64 player BF3...I just need it but I wont be putting spyware on my pc to get it...
Prepare to hear something come from EA's Public Relations department soon, trying to sweet talk their way out of this. You know it will happen.
The preceding Anti Origin Comment was brought to you by State Farm Insurance. Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there.
... it's sort of the same thing as what Steam does. Not sure what all the fuss and/or hate is about. In fact it seems that EA's privacy agreement is a bit more specific than the generalities in Steam's ... which is not such a bad thing.
Observe my earlier comment in the thread and Joshua's comment immediately after. Steam's EULA is different in this regard.
The difference is that Steam is only referring the information that you give them. They don't scan your computer to find out what kind of software you are using unless you agree to one of their random system surveys. And in the event of said survey you are given TWO options to decline out while EA apparently gives you none.
Previously I argued that I welcome healthy competition to Steam, and I honestly thought it would be Origin.
All I can think of when I heard the EA name now is a resounding, stern "piss off". And to think they once published/developed something like Clive Barker's Undying and American McGee's Alice, two of my favourite games last generation.
I hope DICE and Bioware can somehow raise enough money to buy themselves out of the clusterfuck that is EA.
There's also the fact that EA isn't exactly known for being the most trustworthy individuals. Anybody remember Bobby Kotick talking about how to best "exploit" franchises?
Anyone care to guess how he's going to "exploit" any information he gathers from your computers?
"demographics" could easily include information such as computer and operating system... "habits" could easily be information such as cookies from various websites. It's all very vague.
