EA's failure to release Dark Knight game a financial fail, says analyst photo

Speaking to the Associate Press (Via Edge) under anonymity, an Electronic Arts manager confirmed that Pandemic Studios was indeed producing a game based on the recent Batman flick, The Dark Knight. The AP piece speculates that the game may have been shelved due to quality concerns, actor Heath Ledger's passing, or poor sales potential.

Why so serious? Because industry analyst Michael Pacther feels the game could have sold four million units, a huge improvement over the abysmal sales of EA's Batman Begins which only moved 587,000 copies. Translated into the language that EA speaks so fluently (money), that's $100 million, $70 of which could have gone directly to the publisher.

Dark Knight actor Gary Oldman had spilled the beans to G4 about the game's existence in an interview recently, but a title had never officially been announced. According to the EA manager who backed up Oldman's claims, the game doesn't appear on EA's internal release list through March of 2009.

So would anyone buy this game based on the strength of the movie alone? If the quality of the title was poor, does anyone think consumers are smart enough to keep their purchases in check? Or do you think they'd blindly fork over cash for digital trashed based on the name alone?

I personally am disappointed they didn't at least try, but going on the general movie franchise video game rule, it's probably good they didn't.

I kinda figured they'd released the game at the same time as the bluray/dvd. It would give the devs time to hopefully create something that's not total crap, since EA seems to be trying harder to come out with quality games these days, and they'd still get the movie release hype.

I hope they opt to release a well made game around the time of the DVD release. Personally, I'm glad they didn't release a half-baked game alongside the film -- my heart couldn't have taken two disappointments.

I would buy a good batman game in a flash. The potential is there.
I would not, however, buy a Dark Knight game. Games based on movies tend to either mess with the plot too much and get random and silly, or follow it too strongly and end up boring or annoying because of it. I bet a ton of other people would though, just cos 'OMG BATMAN THE DARK KNIGHT SO AWSUM YEAH!'.

I did think of this however - how about a Batman game, using the Assassins Creed engine (or similar)? You could make a huge Gotham city to run around in. Youve got random stuff happening on the streets all the time (would use Emotion engine for that). The climbing mechanics would suit it because they wouldnt be as much in focus; i felt they were too easy and boring to be as important as they were in AC, but for a Batman game youd have other methods of getting places - grappling hooks, using the cape, batmobile, etc etc. And the villains would be more interesting, of course, since theyre batman villains, theyre always crazy.

I reckon they pushed it back because of last times poor sales. It wasn't ready, so why rush it out? That's what always happens and that's why the games turn out shite.

In this day and age when games are taking longer than ever to make, it probably means there will be an increase in games filtering out way after a film's release.

I say a DVD/game package (blu-ray for PS3) would be great business.

Wait... not emotion engine... lol. I mean the Euphoria engine, not the old ps2 chip or whatever...

Anyone remember when they released a game based on Tim Burton's Batman for the Mega Drive? A friend of my imported that and we were both in heaven, despite the game's middle-of-the-road quality. I think he spent $70 on it.

@ HarassmentPanda - Are you referring to the movie or Heath Ledger's death as the disappointment, cause we don't want to "blow" this conversation out of proportion, now do we?

I had Batman: Forever on the megadrive, if thats what you mean. That game was hot.
Anyway. BIG SHOCK; EA tried to make another movie game. Lucky someone told them it was GOING to be crap rather then the reviewers telling them.

@ Nick Chester,

I remember one on the C64. You had to swing the batmobile round with the wire on lamp posts and use the batwing scissors to cut those big balloons the joker had. It was great.

As for the open-world suggestion... A button you press to make Batman say "Car". The batmobile then shows up everytime like in the movie and you don't have to worry about throwing poor old ladies from their Nissan.

of course i would have bought a game based upon a movie, when has there ever been a game based upon a movie that WASN'T good? resident evil, silent hill, alone in the dark, doom, mario. all of those are great games that lived up to if not surpassed the greatness of the movie.

have you guys heard there's a game out based off that max payne movie coming out?

@Clance:

Oooh, that sounds fun. I might have to emulate that. Or buy a C64 on Ebay.

I'm pretty surprised that EA MONEY EATING MACHINE didn't try to cash in on the upcoming film. I suppose that the medicore sales of Batman Begins: Holy Shit I'm Fighting Oscar Schindler On A Train resulted in them getting cold feet, but I'd like to give them the benefit of the doubt and believe they've been working on the game for awhile now with the intent of releasing a good game as opposed to a decent one.

Know this, EA: The Dark Knight was amazing. You better f'n live up to it.

They could've put jack shit into the game and still made mad sales. When popular licenses are involved, fun is optional! Right, THQ?

It was hard though. I think.

either way I don't think we should have a game for this movie. In a way I think it would cheapen the movie especially since it will be coming out after the fact. On top of that we know its being rushed together so it will most likely be bad. Now if they made a game that's really good and worthy of the movie then I wouldn't be upset but I really doubt that will happen.

I say no to a Dark Knight game. I don't think it could ever live up to the film and we'd all see it as a disappointment.

I agree with ScanCase. The fact this one didn't have a game makes it even better, possibly the best movie everever. I can't believe I'm saying this but...who cares about batman in this one anyway? It's not because he's dead, The Joker was freakin' awesome, perfect. I didn't think it was really about batman anyway, even though the message about him being "more than a hero" was great, it wasn't enforced as much i felt. Maybe that's just because I was loving that anarchist bastard!

Hrm, on the one hand, I'm glad EA didn't ruin the "Dark Knight" name by putting out a shitty game. But on the other hand, I was talking to some of the folks from Pandemic at GDC earlier this year and they were absolutely giddy and chomping at the bit to tell me about this game, which I only found out later was the Dark Knight game. I wonder what really happened? Some deeper reporting would be good...

I have been playing shitty movie-based games since the days of the NES "Bill and Teds Excellent Adventure" game.

If a TDK exists, but does not get released because it sucks, I am quite happy.

I personally wouldn't buy it simply because I don't have enough faith in EA to learn from their mistakes, but I doubt the general buying public would care. They would have eaten up in droves. Oh well.

There's a big difference between an amazing movie I'd watch over and over again and a video game. Yes, it'd be a huge cash grab for EA, but it's not exactly a movie that I see translating well to a game format, and making a generic Batman game and slapping "Dark Knight" on it would be an insult to the movie. Not interested...

I didn't buy the Iron Man game but I loved the movie.

I didn't buy the Incredible Hulk game..........

I wouldn't buy a bad batman game no matter how much i liked the movie.

I'm glad they're delaying it. I'd rather have a good batman game next year than a shitty one now.

EA's failure to release Dark Knight game not so much a financial or creative fail. Release the game a week(or 2) before the DVD and the inevitable 2-disc DVD can have a game demo for 360(/ps3[pft!]) ON the special features disc! SIMPLE!
