(would love to see steam have some competition so we can get better deals)
If they drop Steam support, I'm not buying another EA game for PC.
Unless they have the ability to offer a better service with a wider range of titles than steam i don't see this working out.
As it stands, Steam offers service nearly on par with xbox live and at the low low cost of nothing. In fact, despite the fact that yes Steam is a form of DRM, it actually beats Xbox in some areas (screenshot system, link your profile to your youtube account, better game sales, ect.) I don't see EA beating this.
Steam practically made digital distribution what it is.(they didn't create the idea or even were the first to attempt to do digital distribution, but they were the ones who created the framework that ultimately has molded the entire gaming industry.)
I'm sick of how every other digital distribution store is either US/Canada-only or over half of it is US-only and only the boring, unsuccessful unknown games are available worldwide.
Actually, you would be a damn fool if you ignored GOG. DRM free PC gaming that has titles Steam will never have for awesome prices.
I <3 Valve.
To be honest, Steam has pretty much had a monopoly over PC DD for a long while and they've still only managed to improve their service.
But if you really think about it, Steam's competition are console online schemas like PSN and Xbox Live
I'm glad they chose Origin as the name though. It's the first name since Steam that's been pretty cool, if not cooler.
The only problem I have with it is the same I have with all digital distribution services. If I buy the Old Republic (or any other game) and 5 years down the road EA decides to pull the plug on Origin, will I lose all my games? And will they have the ability to tell me when I will and will not play a video game?
Other than that, congrats EA! I really appreciate how you're trying to keep PC gaming alive, even if it's on my dollar. Regardless, you've got my support. :)
I dunno, Direct2drive didn't do much, we'll see how this goes, knowing their CEO they'll pump al lot of money into it.
If they do it like GFWL, they can fuck off.
It would be hard to beat Steam's sales. However Steam needs to be careful, and not fill up everyone's game backlog too quickly. I've basically stopped buying for now, despite great sales, because I'm simply far too backlogged. I had a tendency to buy games I really didn't want, but were on sale.
EA has always been about sharding away services into their own exclusive network (away from PSN, XBLA and Steam) and being terrible to their customers. Valve has not kept their own games exclusive to a network this generation and are generally awesome to their fans.
Success for EA in this venture will only be bad for the market because Origin is run by EA. And if Activision went this route I'd hope they'd fail just as hard.
But maybe EA uses a fresh start to publish some indie games. Who knows.
Still, my only hope is that they don't pull all EA games from Steam. But I've got the feeling they will.
