EA rocks customer service, gives customer a free game photo

Destructiod community blogger Tino decided to follow up on his request for a replacement Rock Band guitar as his broke after 3 hours of use. He wondered where his replacement guitar was after a week out, as it was supposedly shipped via 2-day shipping.

He came home today to find an email from the "Rock Band Team," which offered an apology for the delay and a free EA game for his troubles.

From the email:

After reviewing our records, we see that your recent request for a replacement guitar has been subject to an unacceptably long delay due to a late shipment from our manufacturer.

By the time you receive this, your replacement guitar should be on its way to you. However, the Rock Band team is committed to providing a world-class customer experience and we do not believe we have met this commitment in connection with your request. As a token of our appreciation for your patience and understanding, we will be offering you a FREE EA game. Details will follow shortly.

We are sorry if your first experience with Rock Band has not met your expectations. We hope our gift will show you how committed we are to your satisfaction.

A follow-up email would already be considered good customer service, but offering a free game after a week wait is top-notch customer service. As Tino said, "Bravo."

I was going to make a joke about them sending people old copies of Madden 2004, but damn, that was a good game. If you all get Madden 08, sell it on eBay as quickly as possible.

Free game is free so at least it's something.

On the other hand, i would've preferred that the guitar wasn't broken

This is precisely the opposite of my recent experience with RedOctane. Bought the GHIII Wii bundle from their online store, they processed my credit card, and stated that they would send a confirmation email when the order shipped. Their estimated day of sending was November 30th; I check my order on the 30th, and all it says is CANCELLED in italics. I send an email to support, and get no response. There is no explanation as to why my order has been cnacelled; also they have retained my payment. So basically I just paid 125 dollars for them to cancel my order. I'm thrilled.

I finally got my replacement instrument today after ordering it the day before Thanksgiving. My drum pads don't register fast notes, so it's very difficult to play the harder songs when the pads don't pick up all the notes. This is the fault of the pads being too far away from the sensor, a little bit of duct tape fixes this. But I'd rather just have working drums out of the box.

So the UPS guy knocked on the door today, and handed me my brand new replacement...GUITAR.

I guess they were so used to clicking the "guitar" button when I called that they just assumed I needed a new guitar instead of drums. So now I'm going through the entire RMA process AGAIN for the instrument that broke in the first place!

(The silver lining is since I called, my guitar's strum bar started doublestrumming, so I was going to have to do the RMA again anyway since it was also broken. But still - I have other guitars, I don't have other drums!)

At least I get a free game. Hopefully it won't be Catwoman for the GBA.

I too had a weird experience with the support. I ordered my replacement guitar a couple days after thanksgiving, and did the whole 2-day shipping thing. I never got a confirmation email or anything (other than the one confirming the creation of my EA online account). Fortunately, I was able to track the RMA online, and eventually it showed "Shipped" as the status. But then later it showed "Cancelled". Obviously, this pissed me off. I replied to the RMA asking why it got cancelled, but of course, no response to online queries. After a bit of digging, I found a number to call (it displays on the page you see during the RMA creation process): (650) 628-1001. They say "Automated services and live agents are available by phone 24 hours per day." So I give them a call (at 12:30 AM, no less), and talk to a real person. I was like, "why was my RMA cancelled?", and they're like, "I don't know, do you want your UPS tracking number?", and I'm like, "I have a UPS tracking number?" In any event, my guitar is scheduled for delivery today. I wonder if I'll get the free game, because I didn't get the confirmation email or the other "have some free stuff" email. But I would definitely call and talk to someone directly.

Holy shit...people STILL managed to get some EA bashing in on this thread. On the internet, never doubt the power of cynicism and downright dickishness. I have learned my lesson!
