EA rips up The Orange Box, sells games separately photo

As wonderful as The Orange Box was, some people complained that there was no value for them personally, because they already owned Half-Life 2 and Episode One. These people are blasphemous demons who should have thanked Valve for making them own such great games twice. If you were one of those people, or if you just want to play Portal, you may be interested to know that (while on the subject of blasphemous demons) EA is planning to release hard copies of Episode 2, Team Fortress 2 and Portal for PC separately.

Although available individually through the Steam server, fans of discs needed the full Orange Box if they wanted to get their Portal on. Now you'll be able to pick it up solo, but remember to shake your fist at EA if you do, because when Electronic Arts is involved, you know that some diabolical scheme, possibly involving your everlasting soul, is underway.

This is being met with some skepticism thus far, but if the prices of the seperate components match the same kind of value as The Orange Box, it could be a good move. If all you want to do is play Portal, then you're sorted. But this is so evil, somehow.

Portal will be $20. I'd say it's worth it for the PC version, what with more new maps.

I don't think it's that bad of an idead. The people that already own some of the parts of the box that only want one game for instance would benefit from this new SKUing. However it is EA so there must be something evil afoot, possibly putting poison in the new SKU.

Wonder if they will split up the 360 or PS3 versions too.

I don't think it's that bad. They're still offering all three together.

I always thought the diabolical scheme was selling Ep2 and Portal on 1 disc including the previous games for normal retail price, instead of just the expansion for expansion price.

"fans of discs" lol. I guess this is useful except I'm not a fan of discs. Discs are evil. You can lose discs. But the internet. You can't lose the internet... unless you are some new level of n00b. When the orange box came out I just bought TF2 from steam and was quite happy with my purchase.

@foxhound009: i play enough TF2 on PC and I find there to be a big enough community and don't have much trouble finding fun servers. the biggest complaint i hear about TF2 is the lack of maps but I have no problems with it. that and there are some awesome custom maps out already.

With the individual prices going to be around $20 each, there's really no reason to not just get the box. If you're getting this for PC you NEED to get TF2.

I don't see the issue, anybody who wanted shit life 2 already bought it seeing as its been out since 2004, now they can just get the new content, even if Portal is the only thing worth it.

Not having played Half life episode 1 or 2 the orange box was a great value for me. However I can see this change being welcome for people just wanting to play TF2 or Portal and not have to buy all of them when they only wanted 1. I still say its worth the price even if you just wanted to play one of the games in it. I got mine from amazon for $35 and all I've gotten through so far was Portal and just started on episode 1. Portal alone was worth the $35.

Some day I'll check out episodes 1 & 2... You don't get that rainy day bonus with a standalone portal!

I'm unfortunately burned out on TF from playing each revision since the original quake mod. I miss my old school 2 forts map and grenades.

Well, I wouldn’t play the game on PC anyway; the PS3 version is next up in my Goozex queue, though.

By the way, Jim, not to be an ass...but it’s “separately”, not “seperately”.

I just hope EA doesn't think they're going to make much money off of this. I can't imagine there are too many people out there who didn't a)buy one of these separately off of Steam or b)just buy the motherfuckin' Orange Box.

It's evil because EA makes more profit from selling discs than they do through steam. Infact I'm not sure if they make any profit through steam sales of valve games, I definetly hope not.

I guess I would fall into this category. I played the 360 demo of the Orange Box,but the graphics left me unimpressed and the gameplay underwhelmed. The only real reason left for me to buy it would be Portal, but Portal just doesn't seem to be worth $60 by itself. If it was up for purchase on XBL a la carte, I'd definitely pick up the game, though.

Let the wh0rage of one of the most respected developers begin. Somehow Doug Lombardi is perhaps hating this arrangement right now.

Either that or the Orange Box didn't sell as well as most of think it did.

So are they just bringing back the Black Box, or is it actually going to be Portal by itself, and EP2 by itself, and TF2 by itself, all in different boxes?

Eh, it really doesn't matter to me either way, of course, since I already have the Orange Box.

I got Portal for PC free. I think it was some kinda Nvidia promo.

HL2 is 3 or so years old. Hell it was released on the original Xbox. It's a great game but it's been milked harder than even Ninja Gaiden.
Cal's Avatar - Comment posted on 02/03/2008 02:18

Or they could have just kept the Black Box (HL2:Ep2 + TF2 + Portal) instead of just releasing the full suite. Not complaining though considering how much of a value the Orange Box was in the first place, even if you aren't a fan of HL2.

I'm just curious about how they're going to sell Episode Three. I'm sure the 360 will get it as DLC, but I'd like to see a retail expansion out there, just like the ones for Oblivion.

Could buy games separately from Steam for I don't know how long now, but at $20 for portal, might as well double that and get the whole package.

All great games.
