EA Sports’ NHL 09 has, like its immediate predecessor, garnered universal acclaim on the Xbox 360 -- 11 reviews, no scores below an 80 -- from gaming publications around the world (of course, if you’re looking for our perspective, fear not; a Destructoid review is in the works). But the game’s launch last week was marred by widespread reports of disc read errors and freezing with the 360 version of the game.

EA forumites recommended clearing the Xbox 360 cache and disabling the game’s autosave feature, but apparently, those are temporary solutions; the problems eventually rear their ugly heads again. EA’s official response came in the form of a damage control blog post from Marcus Stephenson (EAcrazylegs), EA Sports’ Content & Community Manager for EA Canada titles:

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all are enjoying NHL 09! We've received some reports of Disc Read Errors on the XBOX 360 console. I wanted to give you guys a solution to this issue if you are one of the rare few who have it.

Please clear your cache. To do this, you must go to the final blade on the XBOX 360 dashboard and select "memory." Then please press the "Y" button. Then you need to press the following button combination:

X,X,LB,RB,X,X

I hope this helps!

Of course, users have responded with comments saying that the fix either doesn’t do anything, or only makes the issue go away for a while. There’s no word yet from EA on a patch, but here’s hoping they get one out soon -- this is the kind of negative word-of-mouth that could sully the good name of a franchise that’s currently EA Sports’ best. But apparently, the PS3 version is doing just fine so far -- if you’re still considering picking the game up, check out the launch trailer above. Are any of you having these issues with NHL 09?

A friend of mine had this problem and the cache-clear has worked since Thursday or so. But yeah, you'd think this would be something that would have been picked up sometime during development. Weird.

As an aside, I fucking love the game.

I have it for PS3 and am in love with it :D. Since my PS3 is back home while I'm a way at school I'm currently suffering from a mad case of withdrawal (I go home some weekends). I was up till 4am the night I got it. A nice surprise for me was the new Billy Talent song that I was completely unaware of until I heard their familiar sound.

Oh and someone NEEDS to get Team DToid up and running!!!

Well that's what happens when you go from PS3 and port down to the Xbox360, it can't handle it. Either you have to lower the quality for the PS3 (like they all have been) so that they can be equal or you have to just realize that you have to cut back on the Xbox360 versions.

@Volomon: Did they announce that the PS3 was the lead dev platform? Hell, I wasn't aware that EA Sports titles even had a lead dev platform.

First of all let's just give Samit a hand for being pretty much the only "associate editor" willing to even acknowledge sports games.

Secondly, I had DRE problems the first day I got NHL but cleared my cache and it did work and haven't had a problem for a few days now and I have been playing this game a lot. This is the sports game of the year and it's really not even close. The only and obviously biggest problem with this game to me at least is that the online servers are a mess and you never know if your going to be able to get a game in or if they will be f'd and not work at all. I love playing in the EA Hockey league with a few of my friends but when you try for an hour to get into a game and get nothing it's very frustrating. Oh yeah and I also lost all of my Vs. play records after the first day which is also obviously not ideal. I'm assuming these issues will be worked out soon but still. The EA servers are screwed up and that is a much bigger problem that DREs.

Yeah, so far it's quite nice on the PS3. Having a Japanese 360 for awhile now, I recently got a PS3 and enjoy the fact that I can now play NHL again after a long hiatus. In any case, if any other Dtoiders wanna play online, I'm looking to partake in the festivities. I just got promoted up to the NHL on Be a Pro, so I don't have too much experience, but am lookin to check out online if we can get some others here to play. My tag is:

Yeah had the disc read errors when I tried to do anything but a Play Now match, cleared my cache and it was fine after that, although not played it since day 1, the missus has been playing Viva Pinata: Trouble In Paradise.

I have a brand new PS3 80GB (MGS4 version). My PS3 was crashing everytime I quit the game. I figured out on my own that the AutoSave features was doing this, and disabled it. Low and behold that fixed the problem. So yes, the PS3s are affected by the AutoSave crashes. Just a FYI for you guys.
