EA releasing Spore creature creator early

EA releasing Spore creature creator early photo
     Electronic Arts

Yeah yeah, Spore's release date has finally been announced and people are really excited that it turned out not to be vaporware. In a handful of months we'll be happily building a civilization/war machine to decimate whole planets, or peacefully cohabitating if that's your bag. But god damn it I want to build weird aliens and I want to build them now! A huge part of the fun of Spore will be the mad science and creativity that goes into creature creation, and the announcement of a release date only serves to remind me that I can't do that now.

Thankfully, EA understands our torment, and following in the footsteps of Maxis' The Sims 2, has announced their plan to release a character creation only version of Spore prior to the full game's September release.  EA has yet to reveal a release date for this sweet sample of Spore ambrosia, or whether it will be released as a free download or sold as an individual game.  Hopefully they have the good sense to release this version as a free download (or as a giveaway for pre-order), but even if they don't it's highly unlikely the creature creation edition of Spore will just sit around on store shelves.

Complain about corporate greed and profiteering all you like, considering the torturous wait we've had to endure I'd gladly pay a nominal price for the character creation version of Spore, and I suspect many of my alien-hungry brethren would too.

Am I the only person who does not have the slightest bit of interest in Spore?
I enjoy my god games, but I just have this premonition that it's going to be a complete and utter disappointment.
I can only see it turning out as a collection of repetitive mini-games interspersed by creature creation and what will most likely be a very simplistic RTS end game.

I can admit its got some great ideas and the preview videos of creature creation are clever, but that doesn't necessarily make it an enjoyable game.

I'd be pissed if they made me pay for it... or at least I'd grumble under my breath as I bought it...

can't wait! Hopefully the create-a-thing is huge, unlike the sims.

Bah, if it's greed, who gives a fuck? I want this Now!

It also kind of makes sense since the worlds will be populated with other people's creations. This will allow a decent database of creatures to be created before the release date.

I dont know... The whole concept is interesting and all, but looking from the graphics, looks worse than WoW style for kids.

If the whole theme concept was dark, brutal, killer, SURVIVAL, serious like, YOU GOTTA SURVIVE Biotch or u will die!, then I would say: "FUK YEA!" but looking at it, looks like many 5 year old kids of mega nerds will be playing this.

Which is not a bad thing, it looks like a game they could use to teach kids a little bit more about evolution/survival in middle schools.

Well there sim creation tools were always free so I'd like to think that this one will be free as well. Maxis was always good to the players so I've got hope for this.

Can't pay to only create creatures and do nothing else. If it's free...good, if not...very bad. I don't pay for demos.

Eh, I honestly wouldn't pay that much for the creator on its own.

As a preorder gift or free demo though? Hell yes. :D

Pointing to corporate greed as the cause of problems is usually a consequences of incredible lazines (not that that's what you were doing here, of course). If they do choose to release the character creator for a cost, a good consequences will be that only the people who really, really want to build characters early will buy it, which doesn't sound like a bad idea. If not, they will release it for free because they want as many characters as they can. They're probably thinking of the long-term value of the software either way, as that's what will make them green in the end.
