EA quickly ends Mass Effect 3's BF3 freebie offer photo

Electronic Arts has ended the recent offer of a free copy of Battlefield 3 with every pre-purchase of Mass Effect 3 on Origin. The termination of the offer has been seen as quite jarringly abrupt by a number of users, alongside news that those who qualify for a free game won't receive it immediately, but must wait for a code to arrive between now and March 8.

The offer was supposed to last until March 5, but it seems that EA had a rapid change of heart for some reason. One can only assume the promotion was a bit more successful than the publisher had anticipated.

The publisher's also been pretty sketchy on its terms. Originally, the offer said that anybody who already owned a copy of the game would not qualify for a code. However, Origin's official Twitter later told somebody that if they already had it, they'd still get a code mailed to them and they could give it to a friend. The change of terms annoyed one Destructoid reader, who hadn't pre-ordered at the time because of the original terms, then logged on after the new terms were confirmed to find the promotion dead.

EA, you need to stop running free game promotions like this. You only end up pissing people off

[Thanks, Brian]

Reason number 3934 not to support EA anymore.

Seriously. Every day they just seem to get sleazier and scummier.

I think EA has to be the biggest scum on the earth. Thank god for Gabe Newell.

Doing something nice for the people who support them is not in EA's vocabulary. Their "nice offer" to fans must have made some graph point downwards on a spreadsheet. Quick, pull the fucking plug!

@noisypinkbubbles Devin Townsend ftw.

And I was planning on pre-purchasing through Origin because of this deal. Guess I'm not now.

Any kind of publicity is publicity for them I guess. As I am sitting (and sh*tting) on this toilet, I have the sudden urge to paint an EA logo in the bowl as an ironic symbol of how EA continuously sh*ts on their customers.

Yep, definitely pirating this game. It's getting hard to support a lot of these companies. I hope this game does horrible and they learn a lesson... that probably won't happen though.

Wah, they took away my right as a God-loving Christian American for a free game!

Seriously, I hate EA as much as the next redditor, but the game was AN EXTRA. They didn't have to offer it in the first place.

It's easy to play the 'Origin sucks' card. But in all honesty, we can either work with EA to help make Origin what it should be or we can continue to be fed a subpar experience & shoddy service. Jim...good on you, brother.

@ Namodacranks

Please don't bring that logic into this.

I'm sick of people who will roll over for developers because they feel everything is some sort of gift to consumers and we aren't owed anything.

EA didn't just say this promotion was on "for a limited time" which would set people up to assume it could be gone at any moment, it was said to end on a specific date, and EA went back on their word for what I can only assume is money related.

Have some self respect and hold people to their word. You can't just look at a publisher as a gift horse and you should be thanking it for every blessing it passes down on us.

I believe that line of thinking got us into this mess in the first place.

And to add on to what you said, with EA it has honestly been one thing after another. We've been fed up with them long before this...

After Mass Effect 3, I am done with them. Though I may find other means...

Well, it's a good thing i jumped in there when I did then. I find it extremely fucked up, though, that they closed the offer. They finally did something awesome to draw more people to their service and they killed it. How fucking stupid are they? I almost wish I could get my money back and just buy it from the store. Then they'd only get about half the money.

@Xafrini Wut? I guess I missed one of Riccitello's letters to investors and friends. As far as I can tell, gamers have been given no voice to keep Origin from continuously sucking its own shaft.

I know EA did something similar and I bought the Sims 3 for my girlfriend. I found out that there was a 50% sale on the same day but you had to use a "special link" to get it as the link on their website did not add the sale price.

Ordered the game AGAIN for the 50% dscount and it took like 4 hours to cancel my order and I had to call them and everything. They ended up sending me 2 copies of the game.....suckers.

@N-effect merely making the statement about being pro-active. For better or worse, Origin will likely be a part of all EA games from now on. Sadly, companies only seem to listen to lawsuits nowadays.

I can't help but think the entire existence of Mass Effect 3 is some kind of twisted test of consumer loyalty.

As in, EA will continue to do shitty things related to Mass Effect 3 and see how many people will still buy it.

Tons of pre-order exclusive, retailer-exclusive DLC, an unnecessary co-op mode to slap an online pass on the game, that tattooed guy, Jessica Chobot, "auto-conversation" options. EA has to be TRYING to piss people off. There's no way they aren't aware of how shitty this all is.

Now, I'm not on the 'fuck EA' bandwagon by default, as a non-pc gamer I seem to have less of a problem with their stuff, but going back on an agreement is just bad business. And they were giving away a *download*, so it's not like they were actually losing anything from it... What a bunch of dickbags. Oh well, I guess giving something for free to promote a positive customer relationship just isn't how they roll...

I already owned BF3 from Amazon's deal back when it released so it didn't concern me. This move though is just wrong, kinda makes you wonder why we should support them. I'll go back to waiting for Prey 2 now and some other random game I can't remember the name of.

I had decided to give origin a chance today because of the deal. I was trying it out thinking the program couldn't be that bad and honestly it wasn't. The problem was EA behind it. Just uninstalled it and boy do I feel foolish for hoping. Maybe if THQ or Activision had done it they would have been as evi....there I go hoping again.

This is exactly the same sort of shit that EA pulled last year with the PS3 version of Battlefield 3. Customers were supposed to get a free copy of Battlefield 1943 and didn't because EA changed it's mind at the last fucking minute. They even did it once before that with BF1943 when they not only claimed to be working on a PC version but took money for pre-orders through their shitty online store.

Of course it's not as if EA would also ever do anything sensible with Origin to make this deal really work, like let gamers who already own BF3 and got an extra copy when they purchased ME3 gift the extra copy to their friends. It's not as if that would get more people to use Origin like it does for Valve. Oh wait it would, EA is just a bunch of idiots.

If it weren't for Bioware and DICE I wouldn't buy any of their products, and the line those two developers inhabit over the river of shit that is the rest of EA is getting mighty thin.
