EA pulls 49 online titles off of life support, watches them slowly die photo

It's now time to make a visit and pay your final respects to the elders. Make your piece and say your goodbyes, as Electronic Arts will be pulling the plug on dozens of their online titles come September 1st.

Varied EA titles, mostly sports games marked '06', are nearing the end of their online life span. Most of the '06' FIFA, Madden, MVP, NASCAR, NBA Live, and NCAA for all consoles and PC will stop supporting online services on September 1, 2007. Some titles from the Need for Speed and Burnout series will see the same fate in November.

This was done to make way for the upcoming '08' titles, all of which will be hitting shelves in the coming months.

Hit the jump to see the full list.

quite a dilemma...

Do gamers hate EA for poor, short and abrupt cancellation of online support...

or do gamers hate EA for making crappy games in the first place?

or both?

This is why, at least for Xbox 360 games, the should not be aloud to make certain achievement points available through online play. What happens if somebody buys the old Burnout, just to see if they should spend $59.99 on the new one? Too bad, you can't get all those points now go buy the new one, EA loves you.

Just another reason to not buy EA titles. I mean come on, Burnout Revenge? That is the newest Burnout...

yeah, really glad i don't give ea money directly [only buy used, and for cheap] although i like black and burnout, good thing they are really just publishers for those and not developers.

the sports games aren't a big deal... everyone buys the new ones every single year, right??? I don't know, I don't play them.

I would have been concerned if Fight Night or Burnout on 360 how would you get online achievements now? speaking of which did any of the sports games listed have online only achievements? I wonder what MS thinks of that.

As much as people bitch about Gears of War not having servers, it is hosted by players online... and if they have a shitty connection, everyone lags. but you can keep working on your online achievements as long as someone wants to play with you and Xbox Live is still up and running.

wow, that was a lot longer than I wanted for it to be.

Yeah, this is bullshit. I already think it's sketchy when third-party devs take down an online game for PS2/PSP/PC, sometimes after not even a year (WTF MGS3?), but why should this ever happen on Xbox/360? I thought that was part of the reason people paid for the service, for a dedicated way to play games online, even if the number of people playing a game has dwindled to five.

At least none of the games were great losses.

Wow I have like five of these games - have never played them online - and still I am really fucking angry.

How..how do they do this?

Notice that Burnout Revenge and Need for Speed Most Wanted do not specifically say the Xbox 360 versions. I'm assuming that means they are not going offline.

Why the hell would any XBox 360 game go offline? That's what I pay $49.95/year for.. What's the point of paying to play online if I can't play online? Fuck you EA.

Don't you people know you're required to upgrade your sports games every year whether you want to or not?

Unlike most of you here I do play sports games.. I am basically a jock. But I'm not dumb enough to buy the same game year after year and I refuse to buy Madden, EA sucks at making Madden, the NFL 2K games were far superior. But anyway, I buy sports games about every 3-4 years. The only real difference from year to year are the roster changes, but if you pick a new one up every 3-4 years there seems to be enough new features/improvements to make it worth purchasing. This year I had to buy a baseball game, basketball and the newly released NCAA Football.. But now I'm done for a few years. Had to get my next-gen sports games!

that's gay that they're taking down madden and nfs:most wanted for the 360. they shouldn't do that since online is operated by xbox live.
