EA not behind Origins DLC storage chest feature photo

Snatching mad loot from Dark Spawn corpses and non-infected containers can be an issue when inventory space runs out in Dragon Age: Origins. When this happens, players have four options: (a) start destroying lesser baubles and lose potential profit in order to pick up more stuff, (b) exit the area and hit an item merchant to unload, (c) buy backpack extensions or (d) download the “Warden’s Keep” DLC and use the party storage container that comes with it.

Some people aren’t digging the aforementioned storage solutions, especially the one that involves dishing out real dough for a chest. In a recent article, Web site Fidget makes the argument that Origins inventory is a product of bad design, and EA is using the problem to make money via DLC.

Origins lead designer Georg Zoeller responded to Fidget’s article, saying that the storage chest was indeed an option in the core game, but it was cut because players were losing items as the game’s story progressed. He continued, saying the chest is packed into the DLC because the crew just thought it would be a cool feature. He ends by pointing out this isn’t an EA thing; rather, it’s the Origins team pulling the trigger on what’s in or out of the DLC.

So, as with the Shale DLC, the Origins team were confronted with a technical issue and decided to put it out as optional content. We don’t sense evil behind their DLC motivations, unless of course, the team decides put out a “Use a hammer as an off-hand weapon” bit of content. Because that totally needed to be included in the game.

Between Baldur's Gate, NWN, Mass Effect and now Dragon Age, I believe that inventory management is part of what BioWare considers to be the 'challenge' of their games. Just as the plots have become 'aggressively grey,' their inventory systems (especially Mass Effect for the 360) are 'aggressively bad.'

That said, inventory BS is pretty much my only contention with their games. Been playing Dragon Age (PC) for two days now and it is incredible.

Yeah, I've been destroying stuff left and right lately. I wish I had storage, but I can live without it.

They need to put out a graphic patch for the 360, it looks incredibly fugly for a next gen game. I'm not a graphics whore at all either, it's just that bad.

Graphics aside and this BS DLC it is actually a really great game. But I would still like to see a patch to improve the graphics because there really is no excuse for the game to look the way it does.

There is a Two handed weapon talent that lets you have a main hand weapon in each hand. Totally bad ass

@trevor

You must be one just looking for eye candy as I personally find the graphics really good so far. I still have yet to understand people's issue with the graphics it's look great on my 360 in HD.

The game looks awesome but I still can't get over this launch day DLC bullshit. How much is the ACTUAL full launch game in total? About $90?

$64.99 if you buy through Steam.

Why can't Bioware do a decent inventory system?

Yeah, Bioware has always sucked at inventory. They should at least offer free DLC for a stand-alone chest. The constant equipment management is disappointing and a total drag on the rest of the game.

@Thulsa

My only option is to buy on Xbox 360. Otherwise I would totally do PC instead.

I wish people would stop assuming that adding the DLC into the main game would have been really easy and wouldn't have delayed DA even further and was even made by the main development team. The reason we have launch day DLC is because DA was supposed to be out 6 months ago. Plenty of time to develop DLC, but adding it to the main game would mean retesting, resubmitting etc.

I quickly read the headline and saw "DLC", "chest" and "Brad Nicholson" and thought this post was about a pecs add-on for Dragon Age.

I am very disappointed.

@Xzyliac :

Oh they can do a decent inventory system, just like they can port the Mass Effect franchise to the PS3. The fact is they don't don't seem to care enough about their current and potential customers to do either.

What a shocker, EA.

Let's go over the facts.

1. I bought this game brand new when it came out, and I STILL didn't get all of the content the developers made. That is purely disgusting. I paid 60 ****ing dollars for this, I expect to get the full deal.

2. The DLC that you don't get is advertised IN GAME, you talk to a dwarf at your camp, and he goes on about his issue for about 10 minutes. If you attempt to accept his quest it says the following
Yes (Download DLC).

How ****ed up is that? They PROGRAMMED this guy in for advertising the DLC that they could have very easily put on the Disc, that is DAY 1 DLC, when I already paid 60 of my hard earned money on?

What the **** EA/Bioware?

I could understand (and thank you) for giving me one DLC free for buying this game new, HOWEVER, if you read closely the code (which you had to go out of your way to enter btw) it expired in May 2009. So if some sap buys this game brand new past that date, the code will be useless and you'll have to buy additional $15 for the game because of day one DLC and corporation greed.

I'm really sick of this generation of gaming. I don't care if this game is great this is just revolting the way EA/Bioware has gone about this DLC for the game.

I never thought I'd see the day when Bioware had launch day DLC, AND stripped something that could have easily been in the main game. While it's normally a Bioware trope (inventory management) they CLEARLY dabbled with putting a free "bank" in, not only because of all the fan outrage of Mass Effect's horrible inventory, but because you get twice as many items in this game as any other previous Bioware game.

That's why I never bother with DLC bullshit unless it's Gay Tony esque: something that actually takes more than an hour to beat, took time and care, and was released months after the game.

No, jokes are temporary and should (at the least) make you smile. MEs inventory system was continually frustrating....more like being married.

@ Foe - ha ha awesome.

This game is going to have DLC for 2 years which is fantastic, I'm just glad I pre-ordered it and got the Stone Prisoner free.

Are we entitled to everything up front? Nope, cuz they're selling some stuff as DLC.

*shrug*

If the work is quality, I'm happy to pad the revenue stream of a top notch dev house. Then again, I'm old and developer sympathetic. Whatevs.

This article is selling me on the Warden DLC, even though I'm not too likely to score it on my first run. I didn't know there was an NPC that pushes DLC! That's kind of funny/brilliant! If I see where it fits in, I'm a little more likely to be interested. If its just hanging out there, like the Mass Effect DLC, I'm less likely to want to go in on it, especially on a game that's likely to "end" when you finish it (unlike many "sandbox" games)

Personally I haven't had inventory trouble yet with this game and I pick up everything that I can. Then again, I tend to run off and pawn most of the stuff as soon as I can. I had more trouble with Oblivion I think but what was nice about Oblivion is that eventually you wouldn't have as much trouble.

Sounds..........fun.

Good thing I had little interest in this game to begin with as all this junk I keep hearing has scratched this game off my lists.

I was so damn mad when I talked to some NPC and he gave me this huge lecture on why I should buy DLC that is out on fucking launch day and that should be FREE! I think this is what we can grow to expect from the machinations of the new Bioware/EA bond. EA be damned.

The storage chest is a nice solution, but to be honest I never use things like the 'flame salve' for anything other than boss fights so I don't feel bad about throwing them away.

On a separate note I GOT A F***ING WEREWOLF ARMY, BABY!

I'm 8 hours into it and have not have any problems with the inventory yet. I only have 5 members and just sell whatever I don't need, there's a merchant in every town so far so I just unload after every major battle. That said, I'm downloading the DLC right now since it came with the game and only today i figured out how to make it work
