EA loves Dead Space because licensed crap is expensive photo

There has been a considerable line of brand new IPs coming from Electronic Arts lately. We've had Boom Blox, Spore and Army of Two, with Mirror's Edge coming out soon. Then there's the recently released Dead Space, which Electronic Arts is looking at as a model for the company's future.

"We found a few years ago that we had a set of problems where EA's reputation became one of just doing sports games, sequels, and licenses and the market was reacting to newer properties like Grand Theft Auto and Halo," explained EA Games president Frank Gibeau. "At the same time, movie and sports licensors started jacking up their rates and it was becoming less profitable to chase licenses."

So, the decision to start being original instead of churning out licensed rubbish was because it was cheaper? Only Electronic Arts could acquire artistic integrity because was more profitable to do so.

That said, if it keeps stuff like Dead Space coming, I'm not going to quibble over a little irony.

well of course moneiz was a factor in EA's decision to make new IPs, obviously Jim. But yeah, I'm proud that EA finally makes new IPs and if they're going to be as good as Dead Space, keep 'em coming.

I am just glad there is a Survival Horror game out there I can actually sit down and enjoy playing since Silent Hill 2.

Wow, imagine that: creating NEW stuff is better than rehashing the same old bullshit over and over. What will they think of next? /sarcasm

Awesome I don't even care that they are making new IPs for all the wrong reasons but more power to them if they make more good games that aren't madden

If they can keep most of the quality and maybe add an original story next time, I'm sold.

If not, fuck 'em.

and yet games are pretty much 60 bucks across the board, original or licensed.

Of course they love Dead Space, because it makes money. Everybody loves money. And with Everybody I mean EA.

When I first watched snippets of Dead Space gameplay, I didn't expect it to be an EA title. Seeing their logo, with more promo footage, it felt very visceral; and unlike them. Original is not a term we've ever used with EA for years. Maybe its a come back?

Gee, and some people who usually do new stuff complain that they need licenses to reduce their advertising and promotion costs.

The bottom line is that no matter what strategy you choose, you can't just stick with it forever. You need to mix things up in a while. Working exclusively with licenses is pretty much the same as not having any.

Pretty funny that the dude mentioned money....he would have sounded like he had a little integrity if he'd stopped at "we realized we had a bad rep and wanted to change" But for the president of a company as huge as EA, money talk is probably second nature.

I have to be honest, I went through a period when I too was very mistrustful of anything coming out of EA, but some of the things they have done lately can't be ignored. Titles like Boom Blox and Dead Space have certainly given me greater respect for their in-house teams.

Only problem with new IPs is that Ea will Capcomize them all into utter trash by its sequel, but hey i'll always buy the first one lol

I don't care why EA is releasing a bunch of good-high quality original IPs. I'm just glad they are actually doing it after such a long stint of licensed bullshit and crappy sequels. Good for them and more importantly, good for us.

My personal take on this is that people stopped caring about expensive, well-known IPs because EA was drilling them in the ear. If EA stops doing licenses and sails away to drill new IPs instead, the next game of the year will be The Smurfs: Panic at Gargamel Castle.

Or they could try to keep up the good work and do more things like Dead Space. Now, *that* would be surprising.

I don't care if it's licensed or not, as long as I'm having fun I'm happy. But yeah, this irony makes me laugh.

When it's about Adventure, Action, RPG, FPS or several other genres, there's a lot of "leather where to cut from". When it is about sports or racing games (simulation ones, of course), there are so few things to improve other than "the ball (or wheel) physics", "random and more realistic weather" and "real clothes physics". I'm not against sequels, I'm against crappy games.

i wont lie i fuckin hate EA....ALOT, its always been the same old shit with them but its really is nice to see that they r at least trying something new that might actually work with Dead Space and Mirrors Edge...lets just hope its not another Army of Two where i get all excited and hop up and down and than go and buy the game and pop it in to my 360 get close to orgasm than get let down very badly and cry myself to sleep like all the other times i got close to an orgasm....fuckin EA

Hopefully, EA realizes that the big pile of money that they're sitting on can be used to pay good, creative teams to develop better games, instead of stuffing hookers with it and roasting them like turkeys.
