EA: Huh, maybe we shouldn't release all of our games near the end of the year photo

Consumers know all too well how frustrating it can be when publishers save their very best titles for the November through December games industry clusterf**k, while there are plenty of summer weeks that go by with no solid releases.

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, GM of Redwood Shores Studio Glen Schofield admitted that EA had learned a few things from releasing two of its new IPs, Mirror's Edge and Dead Space, during that period.

"I think that we traditionally thought that people only buy games at Christmas or around holiday time, and now we're looking back and going, 'You know what, GTA launched in May; Resident Evil comes out in March'."

Couldn't agree more with that sentiment. It's high time the industry learned to stop cramming the biggest and best games for the end of the year, especially considering the economic conditions we're now facing.

It would help the consumer alot. Since we would not have to pick and choose which game we want to buy at the end of the year. Spread that shit out, it's not like they don't have a whole year to release these games!

Last fall really was a bitch on my wallet. But Q1 of 2009 is turning out to be 10 times worse for my wallet.

Especialy when we are talking a new IP, unless it's the best new IP ever, don't put it out in Nov or Dec.

The holiday cram is exactly why Mirrors Edge and Dead Space didnt reach their sales expectations

I would spend a lot more money on games if I didn't have to choose between 6 great titles that all release within eight weeks of each other. Early summer/late spring is in desperate need of big titles.

uuuhhhhh DUH! people buy games any time of the year. christmas season or not. and if people only bought games on christmas why would other companies be selling games all year round?

BECAUSE GAMERS WILL BUY THEM NO MATTER WHAT DAY IT IS.

if you sell games at other times of the year people will still buy them because they have money thats not being spent on stupid holiday garbage..DUH

I wonder why the publishers didn't see this obvious thing, especially NOW.

Is it rooted in the notion that all games are for kids, and kids generally get their toys at the end of the year? That can't be, kids aren't allowed to f*cking buy Dead Space!

Furthermore, it's a lot easier to buy games, especially new IPs, when you stagger shit out over the year, rather than have everyone blow a huge load of cash come holidays. By new year's everyone feels poor, and just holds off on the new Q1 releases until they pop up used. It's ludicrous!

Spread the love you thickheaded retards, you'll feed the new market, give original IPs a chance, eliminate the "summer drought", and make everyone happy!

Christ, if Sega new this Valkyria Chronicles might have had a chance.

The games industry is a funny thing; on the one hand they tell us the average gamer is in their 20-30s, but on the other they still only release the big titles during holdiay seasons, like we need them to be bought as gifts or something. The people who buy M/18 rated games don't need mummy and daddy to buy it for us so stop fucking releasing them all at Christmas, it just really drives home that the industry really does endorse kids playing mature games.

It shouldn't take hindsight to realise that their new IP will sell better when it isn't competing against multiple, wildly popular and established franchises. shit like this just goes to show how clueless the industry is when it comes to selling their shit. That and all the grossly overpriced games out there. They need to drop the attitude of entitlement and listen to their customers.

Note to EA: Usually single player portion of a game finishes in 20 hours. Any serious gamer finishes a game within two-three weeks. He's gotta buy something next month, no?

Yes! Please stop shoving things in that holiday slot. Its horrible. Especially as more and more people aren't married to one console. I know many people that passed on R2 cause of Gears2.

Sherlock? No shit!

Yeah nobody likes a gaming drought and that is the reason I own so many games I have never beaten, a new one comes out that I want to play and it takes over.

Man, I hope the industry acts on this. I shouldn't hate the end of the year, because of all the good games, but I do, and its not just the money, but trying to play them all back to back. You feel rushed.

You could release Mirror's Edge any time of the year and it would still suck.

I would have purchased Fallout 3 and Valkyria Chronicles if they weren't released so close to other games with higher priority for me (though I should be shot for not playing VC yet). Also, I has no monies :(
