EA has two console Need for Speed titles in the works photo

It's already been confirmed that Burnout developer Criterion has its hands in the Need for Speed franchise. But if Burnout's fast pace and twisted steel isn't your thing, don't worry -- Electronic Arts has confirmed that it has not one but two Need for Speed titles in the works.

Holiday of 2010 will see the release of Criterion's Need for Speed title, referred to by EA Chief Operating Officer John Schappert on today's financial call as an action title. Early 2011 (January-March) will see the release of a second Need for Speed title, this one a simulation title, possibly a follow up to last year's Need for Speed: SHIFT.

You can can play both titles, no one's stopping you. But if you had to choose, what would you prefer? A Need for Speed simulation title or a Need for Speed action title?

You're correct. I changed the headline to clarify I meant two console NFS titles!

The Criterion Need For Speed is probably the first NFS I'm going to buy, so to answer your question: ACTION!

I've always wanted an NFS with Burnout style racing, or a Burnout game with NFS style customization. If the Criterion game fits that bill, then I'd definitely prefer that.

Maybe it's Need for Speed: Road Rash.

*sigh* I'll continue to dream....

Fuck em both. Put Criterion back on a new Burnout game, dammit!
Or if they MUST work on a NFS game, how about Need For Speed: Burnout

I am all over the one by Criterion like a fat kid on a Twinkie. I still load up Burnout Paradise from time to time and play for hours on end.

I haven't even seen anything regarding Criterion's game (nobody has, have they?), but I am getting that. No question.

I'll have to see about the other one.

Oh I hope Criterion's NFS will be a next-gen copy of Burnout 3 Takedown...

There's definitely no way the simulation title could live up to any of the more serious ones out there. The action title seems more interesting given those facts.
To be honest, I'm looking forward to NFS World Online.

While I'm more of a racer fan myself, the Need For Speed series really had something going with their Underground series. The tuner crowd loves those games. So long as that is the "action" game being talked about, the franchise may well be in good shape.

Given that Burnout Paradise is the best arcade style racing game in evar, Criterion all the way baby!

More street racing please. I'm worried that Criterion will make a bit too arcadey like Burnout.

Sim. The BIN of SIMming, or whoever that dev is that worked on the new Need for Speed title has mad street cred (YSWIDT?) from the Race Driver series. Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed was possibly the best NFS ever.

A team should be outsourced for popping an arcade NFS on XBL/PSN or a port of any future Wii titles. NFS still has a reputation as an arcade racer (most notably, a police chase arcade racer) but possibly they may extend the series into manifold racing (or otherwise) aspects. It could be the Mario of racing franchises (or quite near to it).

Sad to see Criterion wasted on such a crap title as 'Need for Speed'.
I only hope it doesn't degrade Criterion's status to work on such a junk brand.
Would rather they do the next GRID or just continue Burnout, as those are the only 2 games PS3 has that are any good since -Forza isn't available on PS3 and,
-Grand Tourismo sucks since it has no damage animations and is not at all realistic.
