EA goes wild, files new trademarks for games you liked photo

Anyone remember Populous? Theme Park? Wing Commander? Road Rash? Of course you do! These were some of Electronic Arts' strongest franchises in the late 80s and early 90s.

While we haven't heard too much about them lately, at least they're on the minds of EA's lawyers. The publisher has just recently filed new trademarks for all four titles. Which could mean nothing, of course. But one could dream of things like remakes or even re-releases.

Word had it a new Road Rash was in the works, and then canned; Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach was pretty sure his music would be featured in the game, too. As for the Bullfrog-developed titles Populous and Theme Park, the trademark discoveries are timely. Speaking with Kikizio recently, EA Bright Light studio boss Harvey Elliot recently talked about interesting and possibility of renewing old Bullfrog IP. He even specifically calls out Populous and Theme Park

Trademarks were dug up over at superannuation, who sorts through that stuff so we don't have to. It's so boring.

Road Rash by Criterion Games wold be awesome. I think I play the bikes in Burnout more than I do the cars. They handle beautifully. Make it happen EA!!

Wing Commander is the greatest space sim series of all time. Easily.

Wing Commander 3 and 4 had all sorts of people. Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, John Rhys Davies, that guy that played Biff in Back to the Future...

I loved that series.

Yea, Tom "Biff" Wilson is awesome. He's also hilarious in the Wing Commander games. Such a funny guy. They also starred that Dharma scientist from Lost (the one who appears in all the videos), Josh Lucas and Clive Owen (in Privateer 2) before they were discovered... etc.

Great and important series in the history of the medium. Landmarks in a lot of ways, they really did a lot to advance the technology in the early and mid 90s.

"These were some of Electronic Arts' strongest franchises in the late 80s and early 90s."

I hope sentences like that will never obfuscate the true geniuses behind those games.

Wing Commander Arena is still fresh in the memory to be excited about this piece of news.

Yea that's true enough. Chris Roberts and his team at Origin are what made Wing Commander what it was. Roberts isn't in the gaming industry now and Origin was disbanded so what we got was... Wing Commander Arena! Which, I'm sorry, was something of an underfunded joke with a lot of missed potential. There was more substance in the great manual for Arena (available online) than there was in the game.

I'm not even joking when I say that upon reading this article I genuinely got goosebumps.

If anything comes of this, then EA are on track to go from my least favorite developers to my favorites. Whatever happened at EA to make that change is the greatest thing ever.

Wing Commander was like my favourite game of my childhood! - Fucking ace! was wierd going from those amazing video-esque "on carrier" scenes to the awful ancient flying graphics though. But back then it was all good.

All those discs!

Wing Commander 3 was one of the true playable movies ever made (IMO). While it lacked any replay value, it was a masterpiece at putting the player INTO an Action Space Opera type movie setting.

My other memories of the PC version include taking over a week for someone with 10 years of PC tech supoprt experience to get the game running (gotta love DOS multi-boot batch files just to play a game) and missions taking 5 minutes to load up before starting (I eventually got 15MB of EXPANDED memory and those times dropped to 1 minute....HOOT!).
