EA expects a PS3.5 and an Xbox 560 before next generation photo

Electronic Arts chief creative officer Rich Hilleman is one of many people who expect this current generation to drag on and on. He believes that incremental updates will extend the lives of the PS3 and Xbox 360, and that a new line of systems won't happen until we see notable upgrades to the current machines.

"I expect we’ll see a PlayStation 3.5 before we see a PlayStation 4 and an Xbox 560 before we see an Xbox 720," he states

He also adds that online games and digital distribution are the way forward, with quite a bold statement: "The biggest shift is how fast packaged goods games are changing and going away. If I want to go to see the past of gaming, I go to Japan. If I want to see the future, I go to Korea."

In South Korea there are over 28,000 internet game rooms, where customers pay an hourly fee to use the computers. Hilleman adds that over half of the country's 48 million people are into games. So, make sure you take a good, long look at South Korea, because that's where we're all headed.

...Shouldn't that be an Xbox 540? Geez, learn your math EA.

About the digital distribution, sounds more like North Korea to me. How many times do I have to repeat. I want a retail disk. I want to own it. I don't want to depend on an online service that may not be available in 10 years.

Nice to know The Reborn is back and ready for trolling.
Isn't the whole Natal/Sony EyeToy Motion Control like the added 0.5 on these gaming consoles? I really couldn't see them adding much more. I suppose a Blu-Ray player on the 360, but other then that...

Okay, nerd status. 560? Really EA? That makes no sense. What a fucking random number. Where the hell does 5 come from? Unless you wanted to go the next logical degree progression, it would be 540. Or why not just say the Xbox 360.5

idiots.

Indeed, he should have said 540.

If he's saying we're expecting incremental updates to the systems, is this not what the twelve different SKUs represent?

Well, you just got your PS3 3.5, now for the Xbox 540.

Seriously? We're now bitching that the CCO at EA said 560 instead of 540?

The Reborn's retarded negativity is rubbing off on everyone on this site. I remember when it was actually a normal website, even when Summa was here...

There is always the option that, I don't know, we could just stick with what we have and get our next-gen consoles when it's time. Not new consoles crazy early in 2011, not "transitional" updates other than maybe Natal or Eye Toy Motion Control, like Shadowii said, just use what we already have.

People seem to be obsessed with getting new consoles, more than the typical fascination with hardware that our community has, and we're barely half way through the typical seven year cycle of a generation, let alone the ten year cycle that Sony will have us believe until we get a new console. Let's just use what we have for a while.

Um... wouldn't the next series of consoles be the next generation? Oh... wait, our current generation consoles are still next gen. Nevermind.

Well, I could go for a Wii-HD. But they'll never release it, 'cuz it sounds like weed.

Dude I don't even wanna think about the next generation right now. Can't we just keep pretending the PS3 Slim is a new system launch?

Unless digital Distribution becomes like steam where not only do you OWN your games and can install them anywhere and anytime instead of when the company wants you to AND you can keep your old games to use on the system instead of having to rebuy them every new generation it will suck. If it does then yeah Digital Distribution will be the tops but once the next generation comes we'll see how well that happens.

Oh and MATH FAIL!

@PappaDukes

MATH FAILs must be aknowledged although I agree that the reborn is a very un-entertaining troll compared to the work of "Just because you don't like a game doesn't mean you have to give it a low score!" EspadaAndy2 or even Nanbu! What ever happened to Nanbu? I miss his endless hate!

What would be the point of a ".5" console? They might as well make a whole new console.
EA, I would be very surprised if you are correct.

I see that Hilleman quit his old job and moved on as an industry analyst. I decided to do the same thing too: There will be no consoles in the future, and we will not own our games. Typed that with only one hand too, which makes it better.

Before we all scream digital is the future, how about we wait and see how those cloud gaming ideas pan out. On-Live was one of them that debuted at E3, but we haven't heard anything from them since then. Considering that company news typically is filled with lies, and this is EA, I think they're jumping the gun because it cuts out used games and the sharing of games between friends altogether. Not to mention the lack of internet penetration in some areas, meaning that some areas would lack videogames completely. Like the companies say: since we don't see any profit from resold games, once we reach digital distribution we'll be seeing all the profits"

Also, just because you don't like a game doesn't mean you have to give it a low score!

That guy is a total idiot. Past and future. I mean ok Korea is pretty high tech, but they also still don't even have a basic credit system (credit cards) and that is suppose to be the future? Then we're suppose to file into a crowded cafe? In America?

This guy has to be from Europe.

Seems like a very weird thing to say. Do they mean a major software update change like the NXE? Would it be a hardware change? Say the Slim: It's an 'upgraded' version and slightly more space efficient but it's not really the PS4.
Wedge's Avatar - Comment posted on 08/28/2009 18:36

Yep, that's what I've been saying. There's been no significant hardware progress since the 360 came out, especially when you compare it to any prior 4 year period in gaming technology history. I doubt there will be any "1.5" revision per se, but more things like the PS3 slim revision and major service updates to the consoles. And I guess that silly motion control crap as well.

How this guy is the chief of anything let alone creativity is beyond me. We all can agree this guy's comments a pretty stupid but lets actually pick apart what he's implying. Mr. Hilleman's idea of an update is in essence a more expensive add-on. You those fads of gamer's past that nobody cared about. Rich thinks that Sony and Microsoft are going to go one step further and put the add-ons into the systems themselves. I'm sure that would work real well considering Sony is still taking a loss on its redesigned PS3 and Microsoft is still sending out refurbished 360s with 1 month live passes. That's all they need another slightly newer system to invest in with no real pay-off.

Then we go on to his Korea comment. Internet cafes really? Yeah I remember those were a big hit for a few years before everyone and their grandmother had broadband. Asian culture is completely different from ours, for some reason they enjoy being packed into seedy hole in the walls to play decade old games. His comment is comparable to saying Japan's experience a boom in arcades over the last couple of years so look out America the video arcade is the wave of future gaming.

Having guys like Rich Hilleman on EA's payroll should scare investors away. I'm going to make my own gaming prediction and say that EA's empire is going to fall in the not to distant future.

Not all people who partake in piracy buy games and not all ONLY pirate games. Some buy games that they really like, lets say for example a Halo fanboy may play pirated games but buy a Halo game as such cause they really like the games. There are a lot of those out there and with them being prevented to play pirated games, they can really affect ones sales.
