EA: Battlefield 3 'designed' to take down Call of Duty photo

Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has yet again demonstrated his company's obsession with Activision, claiming that Battlefield 3 has been designed to take down Call of Duty. Just like Medal of Honor last year, and whatever failed endeavor they come up with next year.

"This November we're launching Battlefield 3," he stated. "It's going up against the next Call of Duty, which is presently the number one game in the game industry. It's a game that did $400 million in revenue on day one.

"This game is designed to take that game down. If you're looking for a battle of the titans, a Red Sox versus Yankees, if you're trying to understand if it's Microsoft versus Google and what the tip-off point is for this holiday season -- this is it. There'll be a couple of hundred million dollars of marketing between these two products going head-to-head; similar designs, we think we've got the better product. It's going to be a blast."

Somewhere, an Activision executive is laughing at this, because it's pathetic. Electronic Arts needs to get off Call of Duty's nuts, as I've stated elsewhere, because it looks desperate when it talks like this. Not to mention, any game designed with the intention of "killing" a rival title invariably fails, because you spend too long looking at someone else's work and not enough time perfecting your own.

EA, please do not ruin Battlefield 3 with your pitiful Activision vendetta.

Riccitiello hails BF/COD "battle of the titans" [GI.biz]

I sometimes imagine what Crysis 2's multiplayer would be like if EA didn't have this obsession

Or you could just focus on making your game...into your game...rather than some Call of Duty competitor.

The only thing knocking CoD of it's throne...is CoD itself. But it doesn't seem to be running out of steam anytime soon.

Hell, CoD managed to knock Halo off the MP throne, but only with CoD4. Which was a drastically different MP experience than we were used to

Seriously. Save it for after it comes out. If you want to build hype for your game talk about its strengths, not your (perceived) competition.

I understand EA the company trying to take over Activision's spot as being the publisher of the most successful FPS franchise right now, but I wish they would just make a really good game. I'm looking forward to Battlefield 3, but EA should be focussed on making the best game they can.

All the one-upmanship from EA about Medal of Honour didn't exactly do that game any favours did it?

I don't doubt that the game can, and will be 100x the game the next CoD will be, but without that extremely valuable NAME: "Call of Duty" - You're just not going to secure that ENORMOUS market of:-

"people who don't read blogs, don't follow gaming news, just buy the latest CoD every year"

It's a sad sad fact, but it's no less true.

People buy the CoD name and the fact that all their friends bought the CoD name too.

But on the birghtside, BF3 should still make you a fucktonne of cash, providing it's good enough for the more discerning gamers.

It's like the hardcore equivalent of CoD, just be proud of that.

It won't take down Call of Duty at all, the majority favour the localised run and gun game combat not the open battlefield style.

I don't think it's good that that they are shooting for being top selling because that leads to selling out, they should be shooting for being the best quality and pick up more gamers that way.

Being a COD "killer" comes down to how much investment you have for PR/Advertising and having consumer "trust" already in your product.

There is a reason why BlackOps's trailer was regionalized in every country with music from the country's most popular artist playing in the background (Japan's was the most hilarious, made it sound like all the characters were in a disco dancing to J-POP music in the advert with explosions and flying shards of glass - YouTube it for lulz).

So this has to get a hell of alot of word of mouth being "better than COD" and support from the entertainment community (and they only give a shit if your oozing cash). As for me I don't really care, they're all war games in the end with little or no innovation, but great graphics nevertheless so each to their own of course, of course I hope it will be a solid game anyhow since I kinda like DICE.

In other words it is designed to suck - try making good games and letting the market/users decide - you can't copy your way to #1.

It's going to be tough. The CoD brand wasn't built overnight. It took many, many iterations of successful games. EA won't just roll up and snatch the crown. That said, I'm pretty much sold on BF3 and I'm sure it will be incredibly successful.

God I wish DICE was independent or owned by valve or someone like it. I just saw DICE's devs tweet something about not being in control of EA execs statements, but basically everything they say is the opposite of EA's PR asshats.

Call of Duty is as successful as it is for a multitude of reasons, but the biggest IMO, is because it's trendy. It's not the best. It hasn't really been the 'best' in it's genre for a while, but when you have a full house, steamrolling over people and don't loose all night, it IS a lot of fun. Jim is right though. EA needs to stop this stalker like obsession or it will end up harming them in the long run.

@Gene Starwind - Exactly, 100% true. This is and was (for some developers) Japan's problem with their games. You clone the same shit for years and years to try and replicate success and nothing good came from it - All the companies copy each other and there is no variety (This also happens in Japanese Entertainment in general, music and TV/Film) - Milking the success from one previously successful game also benefited them very little.

You can make money in this life and definitely money talks in getting what you want. However if it hasn't inspired and given people a unique experience, people won't remember it unless you drilled it in their heads with what money you can afford to influence them. There is a reason people still remember "Another World" or the old "Fallout 1-2" series to this day (so much so the latter spurred developers to reboot the franchise!).

Well, I have not cared about a CoD game since 2 and I really loved the multiplayer of Battlefield 2, so I am so much more excited for BF3 than any new CoD. But yeah, calling things a "<insert rival game here> killer" is just ridiculous for the reasons Jim pointed out. Focus on making the best game you can, not "killing" someone else's game. If yours is good enough it will speak for itself. I just want to see the specs for this monster so I know how much I have to fatten up my rig.

EA, don't stoop to COD's level, you're better than that- focus on making the game the best experience possible :). Btw I also find it sad that a lot of people buy COD for the brand and the hype but don't pay any attention to the not so high profile game.

idk, imo BF3 will never be like CoD, the size of the levels and vehicles alone already differentiate them. they've been telling the media that BF3 will not be BC series in any way. there are personel from bf1942 and bf2 working on it - hard to believe the game will be a total flop.

I'm not sure what the big deal is about that statement. It's basic PR talk used to generate conversation about Battlefield. As I highly doubt John Riccitiello went to Dice and said, "This here is Call Of Duty. Play it and make a better Battlefield version of it." So what he wants to take down Call of Duty...They are both shooters, but that is really where the main comparisons end. And all that EA/Riccitiello expect is that Battlefield does/surpasses the marks set by Activision/Call of Duty. In no way does that say to me that Battlefield has to copy all Call of Duty gameplay elements to be successful....So here's a Whineken to go with those french cries, buddy.

my biggest fear is BF3 will suffer because they're worrying too much about COD.

They make it sound like one or other... to me and many other people it will be both. to most people who can only afford 1 it will be COD, they're not going to take a risk on a game when they already know they'll like COD.

Call of Duty: Black Ops, is proof that Activision will see a broken shit game and people will BUY THE HELL out of it anyway. It still is a buggy shitmare, and Bad Company 2 is rad as all hell, even without the customization options of MW2. I can understand a competitor hating them for being a bunch of pricks who make shit game that people buy anyways (EA has knowledge of this;Madden anyone), just hopefully it doesn't ruin there own game. BF3 ftw

There's no way BF3 will beat COD for 1 simple reason: The COD fanbase enjoy run-and-gun/spray-and-pray and not games which require teamwork and a brain.

And that's ok with me. Don't want those smelly COD players ruining my BF.

except EA doesn't hate Activision... they love them, admire and emulate them. this is the problem. it seems like they are looking up to them when they should be trying to separate themselves.

also, the red sox vs yankees analogy is terrible, because the yankees completely dominate the redsox in championships. its like 33 - 2 or something, idk... not good to compare yourself to a team with a lot of heart, but minimal success.

Being as popular as COD online is not an actual reflection of a game being good. We got Battlefield 2, Halo Reach, Left for Dead, Killzone 3, Resistance 2 and numerous other FPS game that are better games (IMO) than COD series. The only thing BF3 needs to do is make the game easy with truly crappy aim assist like COD series has. Take aways the aiming skill and there you have it, a COD game with a different name. COD is noob friendly, always has been, always will be, that is what makes the game popular. Put a COD veteran against a MAG player, watch the COD vet fail, because the COD player will have little to not aiming skill.

You can't out-CoD CoD. So make it your own, make it distinct. Make it so there is a reason to choose it instead of copying the same game.
