Electronic Arts CEO John Riccitiello has yet again demonstrated his company's obsession with Activision, claiming that Battlefield 3 has been designed to take down Call of Duty. Just like Medal of Honor last year, and whatever failed endeavor they come up with next year.
"This November we're launching Battlefield 3," he stated. "It's going up against the next Call of Duty, which is presently the number one game in the game industry. It's a game that did $400 million in revenue on day one.
"This game is designed to take that game down. If you're looking for a battle of the titans, a Red Sox versus Yankees, if you're trying to understand if it's Microsoft versus Google and what the tip-off point is for this holiday season -- this is it. There'll be a couple of hundred million dollars of marketing between these two products going head-to-head; similar designs, we think we've got the better product. It's going to be a blast."
Somewhere, an Activision executive is laughing at this, because it's pathetic. Electronic Arts needs to get off Call of Duty's nuts, as I've stated elsewhere, because it looks desperate when it talks like this. Not to mention, any game designed with the intention of "killing" a rival title invariably fails, because you spend too long looking at someone else's work and not enough time perfecting your own.
EA, please do not ruin Battlefield 3 with your pitiful Activision vendetta.

The only thing knocking CoD of it's throne...is CoD itself. But it doesn't seem to be running out of steam anytime soon.
Hell, CoD managed to knock Halo off the MP throne, but only with CoD4. Which was a drastically different MP experience than we were used to
All the one-upmanship from EA about Medal of Honour didn't exactly do that game any favours did it?
"people who don't read blogs, don't follow gaming news, just buy the latest CoD every year"
It's a sad sad fact, but it's no less true.
People buy the CoD name and the fact that all their friends bought the CoD name too.
But on the birghtside, BF3 should still make you a fucktonne of cash, providing it's good enough for the more discerning gamers.
It's like the hardcore equivalent of CoD, just be proud of that.
I don't think it's good that that they are shooting for being top selling because that leads to selling out, they should be shooting for being the best quality and pick up more gamers that way.
There is a reason why BlackOps's trailer was regionalized in every country with music from the country's most popular artist playing in the background (Japan's was the most hilarious, made it sound like all the characters were in a disco dancing to J-POP music in the advert with explosions and flying shards of glass - YouTube it for lulz).
So this has to get a hell of alot of word of mouth being "better than COD" and support from the entertainment community (and they only give a shit if your oozing cash). As for me I don't really care, they're all war games in the end with little or no innovation, but great graphics nevertheless so each to their own of course, of course I hope it will be a solid game anyhow since I kinda like DICE.
Don't we all
You can make money in this life and definitely money talks in getting what you want. However if it hasn't inspired and given people a unique experience, people won't remember it unless you drilled it in their heads with what money you can afford to influence them. There is a reason people still remember "Another World" or the old "Fallout 1-2" series to this day (so much so the latter spurred developers to reboot the franchise!).
STFUAMG.
idk, imo BF3 will never be like CoD, the size of the levels and vehicles alone already differentiate them. they've been telling the media that BF3 will not be BC series in any way. there are personel from bf1942 and bf2 working on it - hard to believe the game will be a total flop.
agreed
Long live EA! Down with Activision!
x2!
I can not wait for this game! Two of my buddies are buying a PS3 for this game )cheaper than a PC, lol)
They make it sound like one or other... to me and many other people it will be both. to most people who can only afford 1 it will be COD, they're not going to take a risk on a game when they already know they'll like COD.
And that's ok with me. Don't want those smelly COD players ruining my BF.
except EA doesn't hate Activision... they love them, admire and emulate them. this is the problem. it seems like they are looking up to them when they should be trying to separate themselves.
also, the red sox vs yankees analogy is terrible, because the yankees completely dominate the redsox in championships. its like 33 - 2 or something, idk... not good to compare yourself to a team with a lot of heart, but minimal success.
