Destructoid is gaming news, community, videos, and sometimes love. Take the tour or jump in with Facebook:

The much-hyped up game coming from EA and Steven Spielberg has finally been revealed for the Wii. It's called Boom Blox and is an action-puzzle game. The game will have over 300 levels and players will be able to create stages which can be shared with friends through the Wii online service. You'll also be able to choose from 30 different blocky characters. The game is set to come out this May.

"Boom Blox plays on the enjoyment of building and knocking down blocks, something that can appeal innately to kids and adults of all ages," noted Spielberg. "I am a gamer myself, and I really wanted to create a video game that I could play with my kids."

Still no details on the other Steven Spielberg project for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Isn't hype funny kids? People were probably expecting greatness, yet here we are, a game that looks like a cross between Jenga and Cubivore. I kid, I kid. Steven seems to know what he's doing here so this could turn out really good. It's also really great to see a third party company using the Wii service in such a manner finally.

The game should be at GDC next month and we will definitely get our hands on the game. Until then, what do you all think of Boom Blox?

I think it looks retarded. But it's Speilberg, so I'll hope for the best. He did create Jaws after all.

@EDS

Hopefully you'll be able to unlock a second game where all the Jaws characters are block people, and you go on a mission to kill the block shark.

I totally saw Spielburg doing something like this. Parents are gonna see his name, notice how Blocks is spelled "Blox", and purchase a bazillion copies for their children. Then Spielburg will use the money to make his 360 game!

How come I've already heard about this game??

And it's not just Destructoid. It's everywhere. Nobody remembers that the details of this game includes building, than throwing blocks.

Simple is not always bad. The 300 levels, plus ability to create and share levels is really going to help it. As long as the puzzles themselves are fun enough as opposed to the torture some of these games feel like.

I'm sure it'll turn out fine, but I'm more interested in seeing some story driven cinematic shit out of Spielberg.

...Huh? This is definitely not what I was expecting out of Steven Spielberg. Not quite as epic as, say, Saving Private Ryan, but hey, it could be good.

I think this game is awesome! haha, it looks so silly.

Personally I dont care for every game out there to be all serious and realistic looking. There are plenty of silly looking / kiddy games out there that are actually fun as hell to play with yourself or others. Try them ;) I know its hard to embrace something cute but dont bash it till you try it!

But, in the recesses of my gamer gland . . . I need more from my Wii . . . I want something . . . more . . . epic . . .

Braulio, it is an offical press release. This game needs to have a lower price point of 40 to 30 dollars. I feel that their could be some potential here but I am still hoping that PS3 and X360 title is something bigger in scope.

It sorta reminds me of Tetrisphere on the N64. The first videos from like a year ago did, anyway. Who knows how much has changed. Could be cool, but we'll see at GDC. Anyone else remember Tetrisphere? I keep hoping it'll land on the VC.

Isn't he working on a more cereal game, too? I think he's allowed to make one silly game and one epic game. If I were you, I'd be more concerned about the second game. It's a lot easier to make a good dumb game than a good super-cereal game.

Sometimes the simplest games can be the most fun, I'll bet that everyone here has played tetris at one point. Simplistic in its premise and fun at the same time. I'll have to see more of this in order to really form an opinion of it. I too was expecting something totally different from him on the Wii, but he knows that the Wii is marketed to casuals more than hardcore gamers and this game might do very well. People who have young kids and a Wii will most likely eat this up if it turns out to be good.

Could be fun if the puzzle aspect and gameplay come through.

But seriously, what is it with the Wii (or just Nintendo in general) and wonky art direction? I'm not talking about the limitations of the system here. I'm not even talking about the "cute > realism" problem that development for Nintendo's systems suffer from. So many games of these games just look aesthetically retarded.

You want to do blocks, Speilberg? Fine. But at least hire some artists and designers who have worked somewhere other than Fisherprice or Playskool.

@EternalDeathSlayer

Actually, Spielberg didn't create Jaws. He just made a movie based on the novel.

And, for what it's worth, the actual Jaws game itself sucked salty scrotum. And let's not forget E.T. Though to be fair to Spielberg, he didn't directly have anything to do with those games himself, as far as I know.

I mostly agree with those who are wondering what the big deal is here, aside from the fact that Spielberg's name is attached to it. It doesn't look very impressive to me at all. Then again, as others have already pointed out, neither did Katamari Damacy. I'll wait before making a real judgment on this. This could end up being the Wii equivalent to the second coming for all I know, though I kinda doubt it.
