EA and Maxis confirm Darkspore delay and open beta photo

Following various retailers shifting the release of Darkspore, publisher Electronic Arts and developer Maxis has confirmed the delay today. Instead of shipping in late March as originally announced, Darkspore will now hit North America on April 26, and across Europe beginning April 28.

That's the bad news. The good news is that the game, which is currently in a closed beta, will see a wider open beta release in April.

"Given the positive response and feedback received over the course of the Darkspore closed beta, an open beta will be available in April," an EA spokesperson told us today.

This open beta period will allow even more players to experience Darkspore before it launches and allow the team to incorporate additional player feedback and add even further polish to the game," the spokesperson said, before adding: "There will also be additional closed betas where select players will have a chance to experience new game updates.”

Before heading into the open beta next month, be sure to brush up on your Darkspore knowledge by checking out our early preview coverage.

The game looks interesting but I won't be crying over this delay. Needs more cowbell.

I see the word "Spore" in the title of a game, I stay away like it is gonna give me Bubonic AIDS. Why are they trying to salvage this steaming pile into another mediocre Diablo clone? Is it *that* hard to create new IP, honestly?

I am looking forward to this, and I sincerely hope that it gets supported similarly to LoL, with new characters that get released and stuff. I also want the open beta to be open 24/7, instead of weekends. I really wanna play it on my own time, because weekends I'm more busy :[

Get rid of the always on DRM while you're at it.

@brod: it's more like "you just always play it on the server" kind of thing, like closed Battle.net in Diablo 2, not a DRM per se. And considering there is PvP available, you can't do it differently or we will have some open BN hacked characters vs. legit ones kind of situation.
