EA and Gameloft show off games for Apple's iPad tablet photo

This morning, Apple announced their iPad tablet computing device. Unless you like really big iPhones that you can't fit in your pocket, you may not care. Well, wait. It looks like they're trying to appeal to gamers.

GamlLoft was invited to show off a modified version of their first-person shooter N.O.V.A. It sported improved graphics and more options for game control. For example, swiping two fingers could throw a grenade. Beefier specs means a better looking, sharper version than the iPhone game. This modified iPad version will be available later this year.

EA's Need for Speed: Shift was used as a sort of performance test for the iPad, which features a fast 1ghz Apple A4 processor. The result isn't quite notebook computer graphics, but they're far above what you'd get from a notebook...or an iPhone. The game shown was fully touch capable. For example, to see inside the car, just tap inside the car, and swipe up and down on the shifter to change gears, and tap on the mirror to look behind you.

"Building for the iPad is a little different -- it's kind of like holding an HD display up to your face. It's really cool," said EA's Travis Boatman.

The question is this: Is this something that will appeal to gamers? Or are the games just a novel add-on to a tablet device?

Was the whole appeal of the iPod that the games were portable? The tablets just a big clunky mess.

Every developer under the sun could announce support and i still wouldn't buy it. Touch gaming is poo, end of.

Anyway the whole convenience factor of the iPod games is lost with this thing...It' hardly portable.

Does it have flash support? If I'd have to wait for everyone to adopt HTML5 I can't see it being a much better browsing experience than an iPod touch/ iPhone.

More on topic with iPad gaming, I don't think the iPad will capture the novelty of having games in your pocket that you get with an iPod touch/ iPhone. I'd be interested in emulators for the iPad though.

And I immediately think of Dom Joly's giant phone skit from Trigger Happy TV.

HELLO! I'M PLAYING NEED FOR SPEED.

I don't know if touchscreens can hack it. The iPhone games were novel and nice little timewasters, but the idea behind this is more home orientated. Why play a dodgey copy of NFS when you can play a slightly less dodgey, but easier to control, copy of NFS.

I'm interested in seeing the eReader capabilities myself. After all, it's a screen so how does it work? Is there a gimmick to making it not burn your eyes?

Oh Dale, I don't think that the 1 GHz would cut it for major games. However games that would use up the extra power over an iPod touch (Dungeon hunter for instance) would greatly increase the scale of games and how long they are, since this is more of a sit at home device.

The gaming is simply a welcome addition for me. I've been wanting an e-book reader and this eliminates the need for me to take my laptop with me when traveling and such. I approve.
