EA admits it 'blew it' with Bullfrog, Origin and Westwood photo

Longtime readers of Destructoid may know by now that I have a level of quiet respect for EA CEO John Riccitiello, whose statements over his past year as head of the "evil" games company have lent a human, humble and above all, honest face to one of gaming's least trusted entities. With Activision putting EA in second place as a third party publisher, the company has had to learn some humility, and nobody understands that more than its boss.

In one of his boldest statements yet, Riccitiello has actually owned up to one of the company's most hated industry crimes -- the acquisition and destruction of other companies that saw the demise of Bullfrog, Origin and Westwood:

"The command and conquer model, the command and direct model doesn't work," said Riccitiello. He went on to concede that EA's past post-acquisition tactics backfired badly. "Bullfrog, Origin, Westwood--all no longer exist today because something broke. ... and I'll simply state that EA blew it, and to a certain degree, since I was involved, I blew it."

Say what you will about Riccitiello's words, but I can respect that. It's true that his humility may be influenced somewhat by the power of Activision, but I also feel that this man has been very consistent in his outlook and actions for the past year. EA has done some horrible, damaging things to the games industry, that much is true, and I adored Bullfrog especially. However, in EA I see a company that is trying to win back the trust of gamers, and attempting to be a publisher that deserves its place in the industry.

Cynicism is cool and all, especially against the trendy-to-hate corporate powers, but I personally trust John Riccitiello. His plans for current acquisitions like BioWare, giving them freedom and independence, is the right one, and EA's attempts to try new IPs with Army of Two and Dead Space hold promise. Perhaps the man's taking me for a fool, but for now, my respect for him remains unbroken.

Only 2 posts about Dungeon Keeper? that game rocked Peter Molyneux needs to stop making tree growing technology and find a way to do Dungeon Keeper 3!

Each of those companies were all infinitely better than Valve. Sad times :(

Also, @Drsnakeblood:
I freaking love Univser at War. I have an Xbox Live Gold Subscription anyway, so that bit didn't matter too terrible much, but yeah, the Windows Live thing was kinda stupid. I still love the rest of the game though.

I own UAW, and yes, it is fun. I particularly like the Novus. But this fun game is crippled. Crippled by Windows live. Crippled by the inability of Petro to release a patch without first going through months long Microsoft Authentication process. Crippled by an engine that can't handle a reasonable unit limit, (I mean, Warcraft 3 armies are huge by comparison.)

Point is, C&C 3 is better off for not have been created by the petroglyph-sega-microsoft developer publisher chain.

<- Agrees 100% with Im OK.

While what they did was some crappy crap, they certainly didn't HAVE to apologize for it. If they show us they're sorry and do what's necessary to win our trust back, I don't see why we should hold it against them.

Some good companies are gone forever, yes, but what's done is done. EA can't change the past. But speaking out on behalf of their games, and defending the medium, when no one else seems to have the balls to do it, is one giant step forward in the right direction in my books.

In summation, it takes a big man to admit he's wrong. Also, actions speak louder than words. Also, cocks.

Bullfrog was a great developer. Too bad they couldn't correct the problem before it all ended. Nice to own up to it. Hopefully Bioware will have more freedom and flourish with bigger budgets and more time. I don't really care if they go multi-platform with their future titles, as long as they keep me entertained.

Wow, only one passing reference to the Ultima series, which EA destroyed with its rush on U9? U7 is one of the greatest games ever made...hell, some of its characters were inspired by Origin's hatred of EA.

Not "to a certain degree", he DID blow it. It was under HIS watch with many decisions coming directly down from Riccitiello himself. Go back a few years and see the complete and utter fuck up called EA.com. Go back and see the money hole called "Majestic". Go back and see a game with 30k beta testers ready to fork over their cash for a 16mb downloadable game that held a lot of promise called Multiplayer Battletech 3025 and canceling it on the eve of launch. All the while making sure upper management continued their astronomical bonuses while treating developers and employees like indentured servants.

If there is one guy I wouldn't mind seeing clutching his chest and keeling over, dead, it is John Riccitiello.

Also, that reminds me. Are they going to start treating their employees like human beings yet? Or is "apologizing for raping some of the finest studios ever to grace mankind" come before that?

I'd like to believe Bioware's people would bail and start a new studio if they thought they were going to get ruined like the rest did.

I read your first comment up until I got to the part where you described Universe at War as a "RTS abomination," but then I simply had to disregard everything you said after that as straight up bullshit. Nothing personal, sorry. *shrug*

@Im Ok.

Fair enough, but the "abomination" hyperbole is representative of my growing frustration with petroglyph's treatment of their own RTS product. UAW at its core is a fine game, but seeing it chained to Windows live is like watching spousal abuse.

Origin & Bullfrog are responsible for some of my all time favourite games: Crusader,Wing Commander,Dungeon Keeper & Populous. Good to see EA finally take the responsibility for why they aren't around anymore.

I'm not a fan of EA, but I'm willing to give them a chance if only to keep alive the hope that we won't see "Mass Effect 09" before the end of the year.

Fingers crossed ...

You know, apologizing and admitting you screwed up royally in the past is one thing, and it's a good start... but he'll need to do a bit more than that for total forgiveness.

Perhaps the original companies aren't around anymore, but... they do still own the IPs from the companies they destroyed. Let's see them hire some of the original devs for series like Syndicate, Dungeon Keeper, Wing Commander, and other series people miss, and make some new games. Hell, if they don't want to hire them outright, pay them as consultants if you have to. If EA can right a few wrongs by bringing back a few franchises they destroyed, that would go a long way for me.

Let's be honest, if a company can bring back Deus Ex for a third game, you can do that with any IP that has die-hard fans.
