EA acquires Bioware and Pandemic Studios photo

EA announced today that it has successfully gobbled up both Bioware Corp. and Pandemic Studios as part of its balanced breakfast, as the company has completed its acquisition of VG Holding Corp.

EA Games label president Frank Gibeau will be overseeing the studios, while Bioware's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk have been made Vice Presidents of EA and Co-General Managers of Bioware Corp. Andrew Goldman and Josh Resnick of Pandemic Studios have also been named Vice Presidents of EA, and Co-General Managers of Pandemic Studios, with Greg Borrud as another Vice President of EA and Chief Production officer of Pandemic.

It's okay, I didn't understand any of that either. The important thing here is that two development studios known for their outstanding work have been absorbed by EA Games like so many others before them. Do you see this as EA swallowing everything in sight, or as two very deserving studios getting some strong financial backing? Hit the comments and let us know what you think.

I'm going to remain ignorantly optimistic and say that since the main boioware heads are still somewhat holding the reins of Bioware that EA isn't going to shit-piss on the good name that Bioware is...

I'm going the other way and being extremely pessimistic. EA is HORRBIBLE! Everything they touch they turn to crap and it's only a matter of time before the beluga whale known as EA will destroy gaming forever.

I actually think EA has been doing a good job recently, and making these guys VPs certainly couldn't hurt the company. I think, if the lack of competition and corporate environment doesn't stifle their creativity, more power to them. At least they are smart enough to recognize the talent in these companies.

I do fear for the monopoly aspect though, because competition never hurts anyone.

I think time will tell. If they stress release date compared to quality, then EA will have failed and Bioware and Pandemic will end up crappy acquisitions of name only. If they still push for quality out of Bioware and Pandemic then we as the consumer win, but how often to big corporations pick the consumer compared to the dollar?

Maybe now that Activision is actually threatening them a bit EA will be concerned with the gamer and not be $ whores.

I don't have the EA hate most people have. Granted they put out a lot of shit and maybe make things hard for some studios, but they have money, and they have a lot of studios. You can't expect everything they to do be golden. However, I do think Bioware and Pandemic will be better off with EA because of the massive amounts of money they will be swimming in like Scrooge McDuck.

It all depends how involved EA get with development, I am hoping they have a positive affect on these studios. It is a worry though, are we gonna see more of the xbox live bolt on ea server bollocks?? please no.

what my gut tells me, is that we will not see better mass effects sequels. the things you didn't like about mass effect will not be redefined and implemented in the next installments. the technical issues will be taken care of, pretty certain of that, but the things you thought mass effect didn't have as a concept will still be missing. perhaps even more. lets just hope i'm wrong.

If they sit back and provide financial backing etc. then good. If EA gets involved with controlling release dates etc. then it won't be good.

I think Bioware is still going to make great games, but most/all of them are going to be Multiplat now. I just hope EA doesn't make them rush games out.

this just in. EA has bought me and my family. They put the offer on the table and we just couldnt refuse. I dont want any of you to think that this is going to change me. I will still come to D toid as often as possible and will not let EA stand in the way of my comments. I feel pretty good about the deal, but my wife is still a little unsure. They say that by this time next year our marriage will be twice as strong and profit margins will definitely rise, even if our quality of life goes down slightly.

I like this new direction EA is taking. They're gobbling up every studio in sight, but then they're kinda letting them do their own thing. I mean, Rock Band wasn't bad, right? The money from EA could allow Bioware and Pandemic to make some of the best games they ever have.

I think EA has been genuinely attempting to improve its image and overall game quality. The results have been mixed so far, but with games like Tiberium, Dead SPace and Army of Two coming, at least they're trying. Honestly, I'd be much more worried about Activision at this point.

Financial backing? With BioWare's level of success, have they really ever needed such a thing? Personally, this just makes me weary of EA's involvement in their 7 upcoming games.

yeah EA will most likely let Bioware and Pandemic do their own thing, but still - NOW THERE'S LESS COMPETITION, and that's a bad thing for creativity.

I was already expecting mass effect to have rapid release of sequels and expenisve downloadable content.

Now I am 100% certain. Gives me more mass effect soon :)

Dunno if its a bad thing or not. Perhaps bioware will slowly become a used husk, perhaps they will keep their integrity and creativity like say infinity ward; possibly by allowing some of their francises to be raped on a bianual basis by another game developer. Something they already have experiance of with KOTOR2, some might say.

Everything is going to be just fine. If you hadn't noticed, EA is in the middle of changing for the better. They aren't going to rush either Bioware or Pandemic to get games out the door. They will give them all the time they need to make things as good as possible. If they're willing to delay crap like Army of Two because they aren't satisfied with the quality, they'll definitely be willing to delay Mass Effect.

Also, notice they didn't fuck with Rock Band. Harmonix seems pretty happy to be part of EA to me. It's the dicks at Activision that are going to ruin games. We're going to be playing Guitar Hero 25 when we're senior citizens. fucking whores.

Yeah, give EA a break. Now that Activision is the #1 publisher, EA seems to be legitimately trying hard to get back to the top, but in a good way. Plus, Activision has totally let that title get to their collective head...what with the Rock Band PS3 patch bullshit, and the rumors that they’re having Treyarch develop CoD 5 in WWII, they’ve become all about the money instead of what’s best for gamers. Let’s see what BioWare and Pandemic can do, and then judge this deal.

Also, Topher = amazing at shooping things.

If it had of been 2 or 3 years ago this would of really annoyed me, EA were a real bad company.

But since then they've strived to repair their image. Look at their most recent output, Skate, Fight Night & Rock Band.

Couple this with the huge improvement the likes of FIFA has made in that period of time too, closing the gap on Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer.

They've also got behind some games that would otherwise not even be published in certain areas. Games like Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath wouldn't of seen the light of day without EA publishing it (I seem to remember numerous previews in GamesTM where it was mentioned that it didn't have a publisher yet) and of course We Love Katamari wouldn't of been released in Europe.

But, to state that Bioware will have more financial backing at EA seems a bit off, after all, their past four games have been for Microsoft Game Studio's, a company with financial input from the biggest software manufacturer in the world.

I have faith in BioWare...... not so much in Pandemic..... that they'll "keep it real" and all I really ask is that they put out the next two installments of Mass Effect with gusto. I think the funding these guys will get from EA will be great though and it'll definitely be a good thing. At least now, BioWare can put some Mass Effect on the PS3, PS3 gamers NEED to play that game. I wonder if this means no Star Wars Battlefront 3 though. That would suck, unless Lucasarts gets Infinity Ward to develop it. :)

I think that mergers like this will become a necessity if developers want to have the budget they really need to make that next great quality game. I think everyone needs to stop worrying, just think of the main movie studios out there that have so many different kinds of talent making movies with them. It's the same thing and EA isn't all about squandering talent and innovation like everyone seems to think they are.

Like RivaOni said, just look at Skate, Fight Night, and Rock Band. Those are some quality franchises, innovative franchises. Madden may be a roster update in shinier gear every year, but at least all that money those suckers are spending on Madden is going to get put use by BioWare and Pandemic now.

Bottom line: Good Deal

By the way, if there's any publisher we should all be mad at, it's Eidos. You all know why and I don't know why no one ever brings them up. Just think of all the terrible Tomb Raiders we received, Kane & Lynch, the shitting on of the Legacy of Kain series, NINJA, 25 to Life, Total Overdose, Chili Con Carnage, Ford Street Racing, Shellshock Nam '67, Reservoir Dogs,
and I know there's more...... they give us crap with a few gems sprinkled in it. The first 2 Tomb Raiders and Hitman 2 through Blood Money were good, also the Deus Ex series. That's about all I have to say about them.

Hate them if you need to hate a publisher.
