Gonna be a tough week for them, though, if they want to go head to head against Mass Effect 3 for release. I'll probably buy both, but I think they'd do well to put some distance between another sci-fi tactical experience.
1. The 1960s settings is ok I guess. I mean the original took place in sort of a cyberpunk-esque 1999 future while this has absolutely nothing in common design wise with that.
2. The animation in the video is pretty awful and very robotic/stiff. I hope they take time to polish that up. The REZ like graphics look pretty good but the rest of the stuff looks pretty mediocre.
3. Gameplay wise this is not going to "please fans of the original" just like Fallout 3 was supposed to "please fans of the original" and was promised not to be "Oblivion with guns" and yet turned out to be precisely that.
Will the game be good? Quite possibly. It looks rather interesting and fun. Will it please fans of the original series of games? No. As a fan of X-Com and Terror, this looks like shit. As a fan of shooters this looks interesting, but this is X-Com in the loosest form possible, they are literally just jacking the name/ip in an attempt to cash in on previous good will and nostalgia.
But... it would be nice if they got rid of the dopey Pokeball thing. I can see why they included it - it could potentially create interesting risk-vs-reward decisions - but there are other, more naturalistic ways to do that. Give some Agents a skill which lets them slowly hack into and eventually disable or take control of alien tech, perhaps - like a mechanical version of the psionic powers from the original games, with the trade-off being that if you take control of the alien unit, it self-destructs after a set time. Would be cool to decide I want to take control of a specific turret, and then have to cover my buddy while he does the hacking.
Also, I could see an "original X-Com" mod happening for this. That would be great.
