E3: Xbox Live to get cloud storage, 'beacons' photo

Whoa, take a look at that! Hidden in a letter from corporate VP of Xbox Live Marc Whitten were a couple of surprises that Microsoft didn't cover in its press conference.

"We are making it easier for you to sign into your Xbox Live account from any console at any time to access your game saves and full profile, including items such as Microsoft Points to make purchases, Achievements and friends," writes Whitten. Cloud storage for game saves and Live profiles is coming, guys. No more gamertag recoveries!

Beacons were also announced. "Beacons are a way to tell your Xbox Live and Facebook friends that you want to play a game on Xbox Live. By setting a Beacon, you tell Xbox Live what you want to play. Then, Xbox Live lets you know when friends are playing or want to play the same game."

Best news of the day for Microsoft?

Cloud storage is bad ass. Microsoft did good to allow USB support, but Cloud storage will greatly help when going from house to house.

Do you know what I would much prefer? If game saves could be transfered across profiles. I can't share data with friends, and I had to replay a lot of games after an unfortunate data wipe even though I had the data backed up on a different gamertag. Why? because stupid achievements prevent you from sharing game data.

Wow, why the fuck didn't they mention that at the conference?!
And why didn't they cover the nxe at all? It looks so damn sleek.

This is a fucking phenomenal idea, and I can only hope they implement it as well as they're hoping to.

This wasn't announced DURING the conference?

And you know what? I'm with llort het with this one -- The PS3 also locks saves to profiles, or the hard drive itself. Achievement and Trophies are pointless and all they do is ruin gaming.

...better and more interesting than the stuff they did show during their keynote.

This is a huge announcement. Why the hell didn't MS mention this?

Me and my friends have craved this feature since the 360 came out, glad it is finally being implemented.

Can't blame people for expecting them to, you know, actually show it off.

Yesssssss I want these so bad. I've wanted the idea of beacons for ages. And cloud storage is just an awesome, natural progression of things.

This is one of those "about time" ideas, but I'm glad it's happening. I wonder if there'll be some sort of limit; I have a lot of save games. A lot.

The cloud storage for xbox and log in on any xbox is a case of ms following sony this time. If you have multi ps3's and the master account is the same on each ps3 well all you need do is turn on only 1 ps3 at a time and you're logged in.

As for cloud storage with ps + all game saves even those that can not be copied are available for cloud saving. The 2 problems are :1 can't mass copy data/must wait 24 hrs to get it off the cloud and 2 a pathetic 150MB is your cloud when imho it should be 20+GB so you could store map packs and psn games off system freeing up precious HDD space and we should be able to play the games from the cloud.

MS could improve on sony's rough cloud service but while xbox 1 let you copy profile data to multi systems 360 put a stop to that while sony has no problem with it. If you had a 60GB ps3 then ran out and grabbed a slim you can simply log in using an existing psn account on up to 5 systems....which is 4 more than ms allowed until the new update. Should be interesting

I'm incredibly psyched about the cloud storage. I've been wondering why they didn't just store Gamertag data on their own server, and I wish the save storage would have come before my USB stick failed and took most of my data with it.

Any idea if it's Gold-only?
