While it's a well known fact the now-crippled E3 expo will be severely cut back in size, we've received breaking news that its once global scope is also getting shanked. The committee announced that this year's expo would be limited to North American companies by invitation only:
The IEAA has been in contact with the ESA to see if we were able to secure a block of tickets for retailers or journalists to get them into the show and we weren't able to do that. The advice that we received back from the ESA was that the show is purely for the North Americans.
Sony managing director Michael Ephraim said he is "very concerned" about the change:
Being in Australia we depended on E3 as the place for information for journalists and retailers and staff, the whole experience was like the holy grail of gaming once a year," says Mr Ephraim.
Burn! See, long distance relationships always end in heartbreak. It's obvious that this can only go on for so long before a big fish comes along and displaces the event completely.
Destructoid will be attending the Australian cookout here at GDC so we'll hopefully drag out more interesting candid statements from the Outback. We've also heard an unconfirmed rumor that next year's E3 is will be held in an underground bunker with a limited attendance of 5 ESA executives so that the synthetic dry-frozen meals will be enough for everyone hiding from their responsibilities to the global industry.

Destructoid is an open discussion community. You don't need to "audition" to post a comment - just speak your mind. We respect differing opinions on the site, so have at it. Be smart, funny, insightful, clueless, or cute -- but back it up with substance. Keep your cool, keep it fun. We only ask that you act respectfully and above all: don't be a troll and ruin it for everyone else. Don't bring down gamers or we'll, you know, gently shoot you in the face and stuff you into a flaming mailbox. Each comment is your opportuntity to make this community awesomer. Is that even a word?
Avoiding the banhammer only requires common sense: spamming, trolling, racism, NSFW stuff, and other forms of sucking will not be tolerated. If anyone is griefing please report abuse. Be good. Don't suck!
I think they're going for that retro turn of the century look!
This is just ridiculous, while I am for scaling back E3 from the consumer whorefest it had become, this is not the way to go about it. I remember when the show was about games no matter where they were made.
seems like GDC will now be place for events, and the big gamers day later this year will be for hands on time
Either GDC has to change their outlook or someone else has to fill the void... either way, the masses must be appeased.
