I hope they follow in the vein of games like Jetpack Joyride and have coins give awesome upgrades, even if those upgrades amount to ways of getting more coins.
Wish they had switched to this with Super Mario 3D Land, as hovering between 135 and 165 lives never feels all that challenging or dramatic.
Either way, I'll probably buy it. I can't stop buying those damned Mario games.

It looks pretty good, really love the inclusion of co-op, I'm not usually an MP guy, but my girl loves herself some Mario.
But still, I'm far more excited for NSMBU, that game looks all types of sexy.

Actually, what destructoid doesnt know, and I dont know either but Im certain, at the last minute, this will be a Wario game that is not about mini-games and is a sequel to Super Mario Land 3 Wario Land.

It is a bit weird how Nintendo did that Donkey Kong was a villain, then they gave him his own games. Wario was a villain then he got two star in 2 different series. Neither of them have a mainseries Mario game in a while.

I imagine that dying makes you lose a crapton of coins. At least, with lives gone and coins the main emphasis this seems the logical outcome.
During the (Horrid) software showcase, the presenter said something about a 1milliion coin goal. I wonder if that is a gameplay objective or just a tagline...

I wonder if there'll be leaderboards for speedruns and most coins collected. Actually, maybe you get bonus coins for every second left on the clock at the end of the level. Then an enthusiast would have to weigh spending extra time in the level to amass more coins through intricate ways in the level, or finishing faster to get more coins through the time bonus than they would have obtained doing those other things in the level. Omg. The possibilities for strategy and replays boggle the mind.
There could be a gold/silver/bronze par system for the average player to shoot for, so they can try to truly "complete" levels and unlock golden statues of all the main characters in the castle or something. But of course, with coins being so random-ish, there's probably no set "perfect" run for a level, so it would be very possible to get higher than what's required for a gold medal, and that would be the realm of the hardcore replay enthusiasts.

I'm hoping they quickly release a follow-up to this where Wario catches wind of what Mario's been doing and gets insanely jealous, then hatches a scheme to steal everything.
This constant coin collecting reminds me of Super Mario Land 2. I wish the co-op in this included online though.

But, personally, I think it's just the undermining of yet another collectable. Lives meant nothing, and now coins are fucking everywhere and in the thousands.

Sweet! I was hoping there would be a change to the formula to make the focus on coins interesting!
My thought was that they would remove 1ups and make coins the only way to increase your lives, but this method sounds a lot more enjoyable.

co-op looked terrrible! Why would they tie player two to the first players screen and force luigi into a bubble if he goes off screen. Its like trying to play Sonic 2 as a 2 player game, utterly pointless even 20 years ago.

I agree with all the good people here, why was this not made into a Wario game? Wario Land was the series that gave coin collecting a real purpose in the first place, and taking this concept just to put it into another New Super Mario Bros. game is really weird and stupid. They might as well have Mario blast out of barrels and throw eggs at his enemies.
This game looks amazing and it has very little to do with this coin thinger.

Honestly, I'd stop fretting about NSMB2 and turn my energy and attention more to the fact that the first Mario game for the Wii-U is a side scrolling platformer.
10 to 1 the reason is because they couldn't figure out how to shrink something like Galaxy down for the gamepad's screen and make it look good.
