I bet it is, Chad. You've been making me smile all day, btw. Great coverage today. Thank you.
It looks like Super Mario Bros., except with way more detail, in HD, and with tons of layers in the background.
I wish more gamers were like Chad!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Now: OH MY GOD MARIO IN HD.
Don't get me wrong, I think it's great that Nintendo is finally joining the modern world. But c'mon.
Only Nintendo could do the impossible and bring Mario to an hd wonderland of splendor known only to the ps3, 360, pc, blu ray player, most TVs and monitors, YouTube, porn, cars, refridgerators and toasters!
Not me....not me...
*still recovering from Nintendo conference disappointment*
I just see the new patterns in the background and think world
I get the world vibe and thats whats most exciting
I MEAN FREAKING LOOK AT THAT SCREENSHOT?
HOW LONG AS IT BEEN SINCE THOSE PLANTS WERE IN?
WORLD!!!!!!
@caramelzappa
Don't worry, when the PS4 and nextbox are released in a year or 2, we're going to hear a lot more "graphics don't matter" from Wii U owners again (which I do agree graphics don't matter, it's kind of sad when it's hard to tell from preview footage whether this game is the Wii Mario Bros or the DS mario bros.)
The aesthetic is bland because they've been doing the same thing for the last few games. The backgrounds are nice, but everything else is shiny, cold and lifeless, as if it were made of plastic.
Remember, Mario is huge because it plays beautifully, the fact it is colorful is just the icing on the cake. Can't wait to see it in real life.
Graphics do matter, but they're nothing without art direction. If it wasn't for improved graphics we wouldn't have such wonderful games as Yoshi's Island or even the original Pikmin. Gaming is a visual medium and the visuals go a long way in making a game interesting, believable, or even fun. Improved graphics can do as much to move gameplay forward as an improved controller. What good would analog sticks be if we never got 3D rendering?
I wouldn't say it's super easy to tell, I've been confused more than once at some of the screen shots between NSMB2 and NSMBWU. Along with a certain destructoid editor thinking it was DLC for the original DS game.
@everyone else
part of the graphics hate could just be that we hold Nintendo to a higher standard, subconsciously or knowingly. Even if they play similarly, it's rare that a Nintendo game looks very similar to its predecessors, there's usually a large noticeable art style shift which sets nintendo games apart. Sure there's direct sequels like Majora's mask, Galaxy 2, and Spirit tracks, but it's almost impossible to say that wind waker is just a souped up version of Ocarina of time, or that Sunshine looks similar to mario 64. These games are now spread across three different systems and share a very similar style, even if they made backgrounds more detailed.
I people like throwbacks but Ive always preferred the 3D mario games
While all this behavior should be a stupid fluke, unfortunately, as M. Bison would say, "it was Tuesday." This shit always happens.
