[E3 community blogging contest winner: atheistium talks about the new Xbox 360 Dashboard and new focus on casual games from all three major companies.]

Now that most of the 'important' E3 stuff is out of the way, I can look back at what really excited and impressed me about E3. Let me see, apart from a mini clip of Lara Croft swimming around (rather than the promised trailer you bastards), I can say that E3 was one big epic fail.

While a lot of the games looked fantastic, I already knew about them from my previous research into the titles so my main focus was on the consoles. Xbox has a new dashboard that has upset a large number of it's fan base, including myself. Nintendo thought that telling us that they are printing money and a bunch of shitty games would be worth our time (err, no). Sony decided to finally catch up on console features competitors already had as well as have no come back for the Final Fantasy XIII announcement.

While movies on demand and casual gaming is all well and good, did you feel something was missing from E3? I think the main worry is that companies are so desperate to hit on that "casual" market they are forgetting about their main demographic: the gamers.

While casual gamers don't mind hitting out up to £200 (about $400) on a casual party console or handheld, they don't want a power hungry entertainment machine. Which is why Microsoft and Sony should stop this stupid charade of "casual entertainment" and do what sells and what we want.

I do agree there is a huge market for casual games. I've seen some of the shittiest Wii titles sell like hotcakes (that crappy beach game for one sold well and even had a good list of pre-orders) and every gimmicky plastic attachment dive into the bags of families and drunken students. The thing is though, these are not the people lining up at midnight in the rain waiting to spend £500 on the next biggest thing. These are not the people who get up early to head to the store before it opens to make sure they bag themselves of copy of that latest game.

The people that Microsoft so obviously are trying to draw in are not the people who will pay for Xbox Live. Nor buy Microsoft points to change the clothes on their avatar that they create. Neither will they bother connecting the console to the Internet to use that shitty Primetime service Microsoft feels the need to have on the Dashboard. They should be pushing to the core audience, the people who will put money into their console.

When I think of competitive gaming, I think of the PC first and then Xbox 360. Can you imagine at events people switching to their "friends" list to see a bunch of Avatars by ice cream huts? It's stupid, overly cutesy and completely removing their original sale demographic.

What is even more frustrating is that I've spent money on Gamerpics and themes for my dashboard. Will I get that refunded? I doubt it. I've been told that you can keep the old Dashboard and then I'm being told it's a total replacement and you will have to update your console as soon as you go online. I don't know what to think until I see it written officially. As pretty as some aspects of the Dashboard are, it's pretty much turning into a more powerful Wii.

I think the Sony actually have more of a casual demographic than Microsoft do, seeing that a good chunk of their customer base brought the console solely for the Blu-ray. It seems that Sony is the only console really sticking together for the gamers and just offering a few on demand services to catch up competitors. Though they really need to redesign their attempt of a Gamercard.

With all this casual gaming, I feel that as a gamer I am being ignored. I don't want Avatars, I would of bought a Wii if I wanted that. I don't want Primetime either. I don't want WiiMusic. I don't want gimmicks. I just want kick ass games, and fun games!

I think I am over reacting but if this E3 was bad, imagine the next. I am all for new gamers, but I don't want it to stop companies from producing quality products and games for the sake of quick sales and family 'fun'.

So you got a PS3 finally? Just judging by the gamercard.

I think the interweb has become so full of gaming info there is very little in the way of games that E3 can surprise or impress us with - we've seen it on youtube, gametrailers, doit, etc etc and the 'announcements' of games becomes an anti-climax. I might live under a rock until the new one.

I was half expecting Sony to say they are getting Mass Effect... I think that will be announced soon (as a comeback to FFXIII)

Yeah, the casual gamer thing is just business. I guarantee you that Microsoft would give up all their credibility and hardcore fans to sell as many consoles as the Wii. Sony probably would too.

It's all about money Atheistium.

How are you? Apart from angry and upset.

I agree in the main with what you say. I don't mind that the xbox and ps3 have tried to widen their demographic by aiming to look more family orientated, but I feel that they have placed too much emphasis on it and that it should have been to a lesser degree, and that if they were going to do it, it should come second to providing services for their key, 'hardcore' demographic. Casual gaming seems to have been a theme for this year, perhaps things will change next year, and we might see them shift back towards more hardcore demographics when they realise that they are failing to make any significant gains on the wii in terms of casual gamers. But who knows, these things aren't so easy to predict.

The way Microsoft seems to be going right now, is probably the same way you see it: PC first, 360 second. The whole new "look" for the dashboard is no really how I imagined it. That whole "avatar" thing is going the way of Asian game marketing: charge people for things that should be free.

I just hope someone at Microsoft realizes that this is just a bad, bad idea.

They definitely could/should have toned down a lot of the casual announcements and dished out the heavy stuff...the xbox avatars make me so very sad, like I'm going to have to start wearing tu-tus into Gamestop just to feel like my xbox wants me.

Really, it seemed like there wasn't a whole lot of substance this time around...Here's hoping for next time.

Totally agree with everything. Particularly the casual gamers not forking out for the XBL subscriptions and the like. No matter how much they try to market the Xbox or PS3 towards casual gamers the Wii will always be the one they go for. Its a novelty. Im not saying its just a fad or anything but its the novelty of it that sells it to most people.

What's strange is I see Sony working in a capacity not different to olde Nintendo, particularly with regards to PSN titles. It's seeing a lot of original IPs and quirky ideas.

Nintendo doesn't want anything to do with the "Core" gamers, for now.

When the Casuals are gone to other things, the "Core" may not be there.

A lot of Casual stuff from N and the others can be expected as they are a business and thats where the money lies.

You have to bear with it like the film industry that most "Hardcore" games with be for us with a few breaking to the popular culture and the casual shit games like poor hollywood films like "What Happens in Vegas" will make money to make the industry fund itself.

I think Sony and MS are the only two companies who know what's up anymore (at least out of the big three). Despite their hand being forced to tackle the growing casual market thanks to Nintendo's success, they still offered up a lot of cool improvements for their respective systems (I love the new dashboard, despite the Avatar integration) as well as a slew of games for their more "hardcore" demographics, which is a LOT more than Nintendo can say (Fuck You, Reggie; Animal Crossing is not hardcore).

Nintendo will change their tune once the core supporters start dropping away and Microsoft will soon realise they're aiming for money that isn't there.

I don't think we can lump Sony in with this casual gaming landgrab though. There was a lot to get excited about for the hardcore in their conference and their contributions to the casual gaming stable consist of Buzz and Singstar, 2 series which are pretty much as good as their respective genres are ever likely to get.

from what Ive found about the keeping the new dashboard, here is an excerpt form major nelsons site

Dashboard built into the new Xbox Guide. For everyone who loves the blades interface, it’s not going away; they are now built directly in to the new Xbox guide. Every feature and option is available right from the guide. You can even access your full games library at all times. No matter where you are (in dash or in game), immediately call up your games played list and directly launch a game.

meaning that small blade that usually comes out when u hit the guide button will be replaced by the normal full dashboard guide. this allows u to do anything u normally would on today's dashboard in game as well. at least that's what i gather.

i also found that all the themes u have currently purchased or downloaded will be available for use with the new dashboard. gamer pics i dunno, i would hope u can just use that instead of some gay ass mii. i fucking hate mii's now. the update they release is very subject to change and as many complaints about it i have seen will do somthing. good thing about Microsoft when it comes to live is that they fucking listen unlike Sony or Nintendo.

Sony's showing was quite cool, though i don't see anything that couldn't already be done on the 360 so as u said kinda a game of catch up. the loss of ff 13 as an exclusive makes it even harder to justify buying a ps3 for a short as hell mgs 4 and god of war which i couldn't give 2 shits about. the only game i am looking forward to in the future for ps triple is little big planet and i cant imagine that being a system seller. i know if i got one it would sit their after i beat mgs4 3 times and collect as much dust as my nintendo wii. what a worthless piece a shit that turned out to be.

did i really just write this comment. damn.... umm umm DICK BUTT

Yep, I think, in hindsight, everybody saying Sony lost becuase of FFXIII was dumb.

I really think Killzone 2, Motorstorm 2 and Resistance 2 are examples that show Sony is really going to attack the online market this year. MS don't seem to be trying to up their game in a serious way.

I think part of it is this revamped E3, and places like Destructoid.

Stripped to its basic parts, E3 is a media event, which means for 5 minutes on national news and a nice chuck of easy news rags like USA Today, video games get a day to hob nob with serious news.

"Hardcore" gamers see news about games all the time. Unlike old E3, we're getting official and leaked annoucements all the time, and will seek them out, constantly.

However, the casual, normally uninterested not making significant time in their lives for games public will see a blurb and video about E3 this week. So the big companies have to wonder "OK, what's going to translate well to a snapshot or a quick video clip?" For Microsoft, it was family friendly avatar things and Netflicks. For Nintendo, it was more fun looking, family friendly games (including the "core" but cutesy Animal Crossing. And for Sony its video rentals.

Re-imagining E3 as a series of headlines and snapshots, playing to the USA Today market (read: Soccer moms, families staying at hotels on summer vacation, middle to low income commuters that can't be arsed with meatier papers) was the majority of what anyone did at their press conferences.

Capcom sat there and talked about a movie. Showing Mega Man woudl ahve confused the general public.

Final Fantasy was basically a footnote in the MicroSoft conference

There's no screenshots or available press for GTA DS. Their official site isn't even up.

Nintendo didn't say a thing about WiiWare, because the general user either doesn't have their Wii connected (bet you) and they probably don't trust their casual audience enough to understand download content for a game machine.

E3 isn't for us, the invested gamers, anymore.

But are we going to enjoy a good amount of good games over the next year? Definitely.

War never changes.

This whole "Nintendo hates us, Sony and Microsoft love us!" argument is retarded, because... well, NOBODY really loves us. It's all about money. If Sony and Microsoft haven't started leaning more casual to get money off that new crowd Nintendo pulled in, then they will relatively soon. I can confidently say Microsoft is trying, and Sony won't be far behind.

But I'll be damned if any company truly loves their hardcore base anymore. They might give us games, yes, but if I learned anything from everyone's E3 presentations, its that we are expendable in all of their eyes. They all have a new crowd to sell to, and they will. Guitar Hero and Rock Band were not made for hardcore gamers - they were made for new gamers, but they decided to be nice and give us something to do, too. That is why we get crap like My Chemical Romance DLC packs when we wanted Metallica and Pantera - we are not the focus anymore.

GUitar Hero: Metallica is coming out ^^^

Tubaric is spot on in everything he says. It's just the way it is and, from a business perspectuve, the way it should be.

Hardcore gamers don't need E3 to know all that they need to know and newspapers and news items aren't targeted at hardcore gamers - they are at the general public. The only way games make the news is if an ultra-violent game comes out or if a new technology is being introduced. It's good publicity.

There will still be stuff for hardcore gamers to do so let's not worry. We need to look to the developers for our innovation.

I have to disagree entirely with you for the new Xbox dashboard. I think the current one looks average and is horrible to use; i much prefer the simplicity of the xmb and the menus of the ps3 and psp (or good PC style menus). The new dashboard looks pretty nice; and in particular, the new guide thing for the big X button looks like it wont piss me off with how badly set up it is (or rather, isnt).

I agree that E3 is failing. I was severely disappointed by all of the system makers' conferences. MS playing up Netflix and Avatars; Nintendo playing up their numbers and smiling (WTF?); Sony and their downloadable movies and TV series. What about games?

Considering Capcom has several games I'm very excited for, i expected their conference to be great. Instead of news on Mega Man 9, Street Fighter IV, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom or Monster Hunter 3, we get a panel about a movie they're making. Hey, I remember another game company making a movie once. Square did that and almost went out of business because of it.

Lauren, I feel exactly the same way. You're not alone. E3 is not and will never be the same as it used to be, that's why I decided not to go this year. Tubatic is totally correct about how it's really just become a marketing tool toward the general public rather than the gaming community. They don't care about gamers anymore, just about marketing to the media so they can make more cash money from their retarded smiley casual games. Let's not allow that to get us down though, since there are plenty of awesome games coming out later this year that didn't get much time at E3. Fuck 'em, we've got our own community and we don't need the big media to break our news.

I don't see how Microsoft gaining FFXIII is Sony losing it. They just don't have that as a monopoly. GTAIV anyone? DMC4 anyone?

I got the most confidence about my preference in games from Sony. They showed a lot of genres that I like, and they didn't overshadow them with shitty party games and gumdrop funny face avatars. I'm confident that Sony is still there to cater to my demographic just as they were with the PSX. I'm an adult, I expect to be treated as one when I turn on my console. I'm glad my PS3 isn't being transformed into a $400 wii.

Lauren face, Sony and Microsoft are going for the casual gamer market now because they have already supplied to core gamers, those of us who want these consoles the instant they come out. What would be the point of them gearing their business to a sector that has already purchased their product? That's like offering beer to someone you've already given a never ending pint to. Hence their motivation is to compete with the Wii's success and break into that market because in the future it'll be where the money is.
Once again I'm afraid we're all being shown that they don't care about us, just our money. Since they've already got our money, they no longer give a shit.

Right on, soul sistah. Yeah, the big companies just aren't that into us, right now. They know we'll buy the Halos and the BioShocks and the Call of Dutys, so they don't really feel the need to cater to us anymore. It's all about making it more fun for the MySpace crowd and the older non-gamers.

It's sad, and I don't know whether it will ever change back, but we don't really have much choice now.

My past experience of E3 from the late 90's it was full of awesome. Somewhere in the background someone is on stage being drowned out by music announcing sales figures for the year and how awesome they were. And it was about 3 things, the games, the babes and the games!

Nintendo spent 1 hour on stage announcing sweet FA, sony were basically begging for more time, while the soft were showing us what they ripped off this year, and how much money they spent on square enix and getting some blonde woman who couldnt even get 100% singing to her own song on lips.

Somehow they need to put thier pockets second, and thier main and original audience of thier market 1st. this way they can still go wrong but it wont be anything like this years travesty of a E3. People thought lst years E3 was the worst ever, but with the exception of microsoft who at least did have a song and dance about what they had and done, this years was pretty close.

Whoever decided to scrap the old E3 of 1995 - 2004 needs to be fired from the industry for good cause E3 has sucked nothing but balls since.

I think that games like Little Big Planet will be instrumental in showing people(hopefully) that games can be casual but feature an incredibly deep creation feature. It will be interesting to see how long the casual gamers will stand by and play shit like there is out there today. My hope is that they will maybe stumble apon a semi decent game( most likely not on the Wii) but maybe on another console and realize that games are more than flailing around like a fucktard. E3 was good in a lot of ways but your right in saying that things could have been a lot better

Is the sky falling yet? Has the media industries ceased chasing the coveted male aged 17-34 demographic? Has the endlessly discussed massive paradigm shift occurred yet?

The only reason Sony is perceived as still faithfully doting on the hardcore is because they realize few others are able or willing to buy their console given the recent soaring gas prices and declining economy. Least of all when there is a reasonably priced alternative.

I am not downing MS, but like everything that they do- it seems to be that they are trying to follow trends and the money trail rather than stick to the core of a vision that they have. I see sony doing that a lot more right now- and I guess that nintendo is as well- but it is a retarded vision of people sitting around in their living room playing a wiimote like a flute.
